  • glevianso - I agree about the transition bike/runs. I also agree about the longer bike rides but I it looks to me like that there isn't much of a taper towards the end before the actual race. In my marathon training there were full two days off before the race. You only ran 8 miles as the long run a week before the race.…
  • Sarabushby - if you don't mind my training schedule is above. If you don't mind, tell me when you would bike/run or swim/bike or do all 3 within the training program?

  • Glevinso - I meant to write a sprint triathlon. Brad - I have looked online for programs to train for a half ironman. I do not think I actually swim or run the actual distance that I will have to go on race day. I will swim more distance on a specific day but not all at once. It works more on building up speed after longer…
  • I am going to do a sprint triathlon as my trial run before I do a larger triathlon later. I am one of those people that I have to practice bricks if that is what I am going to do in the race.
  • My training plan doesn't call for me to practice biking and then running as soon as I am finished biking. I plan on doing a sprint marathon 10 weeks into my training but shouldn't I practice this a few more times than just the sprint marathon?
  • I just got a road bike from someone else. I am going to get sized for the bike this weekend and start riding. I have been riding a mountain bike this past week just to get my legs on a bike but understand that the road bike will be totally different,
  • I am more concerned about the cycling part than swimming or running. Obviously I can run 13 miles. After my marathon I jumped in the pool and swam slow but swam a mile in the pool pretty comfortably (really slow time however.) I have 0 experience on a bike.
  • i just finished a marathon. I have 20 weeks to train for a half ironman. At 10 weeks I plan to do a sprint triathlon to get a feel before a try to complete the half ironman. Is that enough time to train, do you think?
  • any good triathlon training books out there that you would suggest?
  • what is the typical cost to enter a half ironman event? Are the only ironman's on the official website or are there more races than those listed?
  • When I ran 20 miles, I practiced when I would drink water and eat gu. I actually drank more often and and consumed 2 more gu's during the marathon than I did when I ran 20 miles. When running 20 I felt great. When running my marathon, I felt great up until about 22/23 miles. Then it happened. It was the hottest day of the…
  • thanks sara - I wouldn't exactly say that I am strong in any of the events. Whatever triathlon I would do, I would just try to participate and enjoy the event. My marathon time was 3:56 which placed me 276th, I think. I don't really have a strong running background. With that said I do not have great swimming form and I…
  • Finished my marathon today. My next goal is to do a triathlon. Loved the marathon today. Enjoyed it and did a little bit better than I expected. So I will take a couple of days off and then try to start getting my swimming and biking down.
  • meritage4, I agree that I need to train over 20 miles. My body felt great for 23 miles. After the race I was really dehydrated. I think that had an effect on me as well. I do think that running over 20 miles in training would help me personally.
  • Mile 23 I started feeling a little different and I cramped up the last 3 miles. If I could have avoided cramping It would have been a different feeling running the last 3 miles. I ran on the hottest day of the year (not even close) in my area. Even with all of that, I had a blast doing it and I hope to do it again!

  • finished my marathon today - I loved the experience. It was a great time (maybe minus the last 3 miles.) I ran a 3:56. I appreciate all of your thoughts and info that all of you gave me heading into my first marathon. It was unforgettable.
  • I am 173 days from couch to a more healthy lifestyle. When I started I never thought about even trying to attempt to run. Started off by walking my dog. My first marathon of my life is tomorrow. I have ran all of the milage to train for a marathon and the race is at 7:30am.
  • Marathon is tomorrow! I appreciate all of your thoughts and help.
  • I am getting an older road bike and I will purchase a wetsuit. Do you do iron mans? How will this be compared to running a marathon in your opinion?
  • i appreciate all of the tips. I never thought of bringing extra clothes after the race... The idea of bringing an extra gel ... Wearing body glide... Do you put the glide in between your toes? I haven't had any problems with this or blisters (knock on wood)... Should i wear it anyway? I was planning on trying to run around…
  • I apologize that my first post was unclear of my training program and I appreciate all of the responses. I have ran 20 miles 2 different times in my training. I have tried gu during one of my 20 mile runs and I will probably use the gu, however I am not a big drinker or I don't like to eat a whole lot during my runs. For…
  • I just ran 20 miles today. I normally don't drink much when I run (maybe 2 cups of water per 20 miles) I got a little thirsty towards the end. I am just trying to figure out different ways to possibly do it. Obviously I am new to long runs. I also like to eat cut up fresh fruit (oranges and apples) I have been carrying…
  • jhmomofmany - lol - I have just been reading and listening to examples of what you can do early in the morning to start the day and I would like to set a goal to get up and be productive before the family gets up. I can get a workout in and eat a peaceful breakfast. Do anything else that needs to be completed or read. For…
  • i like a little bit of everything. In saying that i am not really into horror books. Other than that I will read non fiction especially if it has a positive tone to it. I am looking to read to get something out of it plus the entertainment from it. I like books that leave me inspired or the book puts me in a good mood.
  • Thanks for all of your posts. I have my fit bit up and going. I ran 5 miles yesterday and the heart rate piece as I am running, lifting, and grocery shopping are all interesting. I still don't know what I am looking for however. I have the surge, i think. I am still trying to see exactly what I will use it for.
  • thanks for the suggestions. The last book, i think i might have a hard time with. I will look into the other ones
  • thanks brenstar05. I think i can do it. Sometimes it is hard to imagine some of the milage that I have ahead but everything but the long runs on the weekends I know i can do right now. My goal is to jog/run it all. I don't want to have to walk to finish.
  • when you have a 5 month old baby and someone calls your house at 6:30 am and ringer is left on????? I am looking at my phone twice
