I love roasted beets (red and yellow) on a mesclun salad with dried cranberries, walnuts, goat cheese crumbles, and some kind of fruity balsamic vinaigrette (black currant, etc.) I also love borscht with lots of dill and 0% greek yogurt in place of the sour cream.

Welcome to the challenge! It is definitely a worthwhile endeavor.

It was just a few posts up on this page: ***snip*** That sounded yummy! Give us an independent review, K? For those not otherwise clued in, I believe she's talking about this: http://wholeheartedlylaura.com/2015/10/tasty-potatoes-potato-and-lentil-curry-recipe.html

Harvard Medical School has it as 180 cals/half hour for a 125 lb person, 223 for a 155 lb person, and 266 for a 180 lb person. However, it does not differentiate between men and women, and I would log that much for only vigorous sustained shoveling.

This is actually less than what is normally recommended on MFP for resistance training, which is .8 g/lb current weight. Since I am 140, for me that is 112 g protein, while under the 1.6/kg rule it would be about 100 g for me. Both seem very reasonable, and in fact I often hit a much higher number, but I've been…

Dude. I yield to no one in the frivolity and obscurity of my degrees, but you (presumably) paid $320 K and didn't cover it with scholarships? How does that even work economically? Like, were you "spending" it from a trust fund?

I want to come be in your troop! :) Riding through Golden Gate Park sounds amazing. Maybe you could lead an adult scout troop with a ride through Napa. I definitely agree, a lot depends on the caliber and the focus of the leaders, for both boy or girl scouts, and the overall broader organization. And the skills (even…

I must be an impossible snowflake then, because I have been recomping for two years, making steady if slow progression in my lifts while my "goal weight" clothes have started to hang on me, even though I am a few pounds heavier than I was when I hit goal.

Here is 46 pages of clean eating definitions. ENJOY. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10337480/what-is-clean-eating/p1

Great post Toxicon! I am going through the same thing with my father in law. I am not sure what all foods he has even cut out, but it includes filthy dirty bread and grains, dairy, sugar, and now filthy dirty beans, peanuts, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squashes, and whatever other evil "lectin" foods are out there (per…

Please give your scale my apologies! :p Think of it more as getting a pet for your scale, that has a lid and can just kick around your purse or the junk drawer. Really, you can never have too many.

In the case of a basement, I might just recommend a few large rocks. Easier to get rid of!

I agree with the recommendations for general strengthening of the core, especially KB swings--work up to a heavier weight and work up to an extended period of time to replicate the metabolic aspect of digging. Additionally--if you are going to have to hit the ground running at 100% (I generally ease slowly into digging in…

Get a small digital scale for $7 that is not a high maintenance pain in the butt and that you can whip out without all the hassle. Put the olive container on, tare the whole thing, remove the ones you want, and enter the negative number shown by the scale as a positive in your MFP log. It could not be easier. And then you…

You can get a variety of adjustable dumbbells from Amazon, such as this set with a case: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071WSFSGC/ref=sspa_dk_detail_1?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B071WSFSGC&pd_rd_wg=0QnmY&pd_rd_r=BNSP1Y4HHYFMYBZC7SPV&pd_rd_w=zU5G0 $50, and they store away nicely, but they are kind of a pain in the butt, especially if you…

If the pattern became smaller, wouldn’t that make the clothes smaller? That’s how it works for patterns nowadays. Plus, why would the cheapest stores have to use hand me down patterns. Were they made out if some valuable material? Every pattern I have ever seen has been very thin paper, which seems like it would be very…

Oh, definitely, and I think that is well supported in the peer reviewed literature. I was just raising an eyebrow at the "lowering set point" concept, which does not appear to be well supported in the lit. I don't have a chance to dig too deep, but I found a rat study that looks like it functioned more as an appetite…

I think it's more a matter of, if you are sticking a cigarette in your piehole, it makes it a little more difficult to stick in pie. YMMV.

I agree with the point with some of the weight problems being related to walking vs. driving--I have discussed this extensively with my Polish sister in law, and this is a big difference that she sees (she is also down on all the added sugar, and points out how sweet American desserts are in comparison to European…

I have just been trying to be as hands-on as possible. "Kinesthetic learning," ha ha. We only have 4 Bears, three of whom are really good friends from school and excited to be with each other after toeing the line all day. So, we were reviewing 3 different knots last night, and of course knots (double half hitch of course)…

Wanna help me run a Bears den meeting tonight? LOL. They are always bouncing off the walls with excitement, so I don't think a lot of leadership is going on. We just need to be able to get out into the woods. So far I have only been at one event with our companion group of Boy Scouts, but there seemed to be very competent…

Back on track yesterday! 2--red raspberries 1--tomato paste 2--California blend 1--marinara over lasagna 3--steamed broccoli .5--burger fixings 1.5--banana 3--mixed fruit left over from baby shower This morning I am making my way through a 6-oz clamshell of blackberries...I really wish I had some french toast and whipped…

I have to agree with you both about the quality of the Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts. I have recently somehow found myself a Bears den leader (don't ask, LOL)...it is very cool to see their excitement at earning their Whittling Chips, doing a skit night, planning for a camping trip, and such. We don't have any girls in the troop,…

I hosted a baby shower for my niece yesterday, so the previous couple of days have been a hot mess for me involving a lot of cake, plus fast food (and the very unwisest of choices therein...like french fries, my nemesis) with all the running around and trying to keep the kitchen clean. On Saturday, we tried to stop at…

@corinasue1143 I am inordinately excited for you! That is how it was for me--struggling at first, and then the lightbulb goes on and you just start clicking along. For satiation, have you tried anything like guacamole or hummus? You can get both in little 100-calorie cups, eat them with other veg, and thereby sneak in yet…
-
DEFINITELY the best! I am, regrettably, working my way through grabbed-by-accident unsalted sweets and beets...they're fine, especially as vehicles for guac, but nothing holds a candle to the Mediterranean!
-
Are you sensitive to, in particular, Greek yogurt? If not, that would kill three birds with one stone: protein, fat and calcium. A lot of people with dairy sensitivities can tolerate it better because it is already kind of pre-digested, LOL.

I think this is an excellent foundation for things to always have in the house, especially if you are eating an absolute rainbow of fruits and veg, and a very wide variety of nuts and seeds. But why not throw in something like sandwiches as well? They are not difficult and would add additional variety in things you are…

MFP is designed for you to eat back at least a portion of your exercise calories. You need to eat a minimal amount amount of calories for your health (so your body doesn't start cannibalizing your hair, nails, heart muscles, etc.)--but if you've done a lot of exercise and are shy by 100 calories or so, it's not a big…

I really like the Terra brand veggie chips--you still have to make sure to measure them carefully, as they have the same calories as regular chips, but the bag of Sweets and Beets I have at my desk gives you 50% of your vitamin A allowance, and presumably there are other micronutrient benefits that come from sweet potatoes…
