  • I think I am done test driving. The 3 grams of carbs (fiber or not) just don't explain my results. If they stay low tomorrow, given removing this product is the only change, I will have to say there is something specific with this product that does not agree with me. I know there are other "fibers" that are added to low…
  • Please report back on results.
  • If you haven't seen these yet, check out these threads: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10274397/what-does-your-low-carb-meals-look-like#latest http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10535785/post-your-keto-dinner-pics#latest Personally, I am pretty boring. 75-80% of the time I take a hunk of meat,…
  • I agree with @Steph_Maks in regard to donating clothes. There are many worthwhile charities out there and many people who really need the help who can't afford new items.
  • I will agree that keto will change aspects of these studies. However, I would recommend you look at table 4 of this study as I think it shows the effect best: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5042570/ What this shows is two groups where one did alternate day fasting for 8 weeks and the other did reduced…
  • Again, I will preface that I have yet to see any research on any topic showing 100% of subjects have identical responses. That said, here is what I have been able to find. The rate of protein being used for energy is far lower than many predict. Fasting shows less loss of lean mass than does calorie restriction for…
  • crackers - aka death by carbs
  • Thanks for the link. So far, I have looked at 2 of the referenced studies. The increased HGH has been linked to a reduction in muscle breakdown during fasting. Like other studies I have seen, these were focused on obese patients. This is part of the reason I was hesitant about trying fasting since I am not obese or even…
  • Please see this other thread on sodium. If you are not hypertensive, there is no need to fear increasing your sodium significantly. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10593504/sodium-science-for-3-5-g-3000-5000-mg-per-day#latest
  • There is no one size fits all. Based on what I am seeing in myself, I am convinced I hold too much glycogen and these 2 day fasts have helped reduce those reserves. Given most people have 500-600 g of glucose stored this way, gluconeogenesis would not be needed on intermediate length fasts of 1-3 days. Given even at near…
  • Autophagy is not just for those with disease. It is a necessary process for everyone. Art De Vany and others have done some pretty interesting analysis of existing data showing the benefits of fasting for everyone. For some IF is enough. For some, longer fasts are needed. The 130g commonly sited is based on the brain…
  • If you are in the Dallas area, there is a place in McKinney that does this for $45. Well worth the investment, IMO. I did have a higher score than I would like, although not super high. This wasn't a surprise because prior to going low carb, every time I got cholesterol checked, I was told I had high triglycerides. Since…
  • For me, IF just happened after being keto for a while. I went close to 24 hrs a couple times just because I wasn't hungry. However, since I am not overweight and don't have fatty liver, i assumed longer fasts were not the answer for getting my BG down further. Turns out I may be wrong - which I don't mind. I did my first…
  • Chris Kresser touches on it just a bit here: https://chriskresser.com/what-causes-elevated-ldl-particle-number/ Not sure it that will help a lot. Normally, I try to lean more on research studies than articles, but in this case, I don't have any saved for FH specifically. I do have lots on cholesterol in general. A couple…
  • Also google brown fat. In the beginning when you change to this WOE, it is not uncommon for white fat to change to brown fat which is denser. The brown fat has more mitochondria which will burn fat.
  • 5 lbs is healthy. The way we eat should not just be about a number on a scale. It is about making our bodies healthier. In that regard, there are hundreds of different hormones in the body and dozens specifically related to weight, hunger, fat storage/metabolism, etc. This is a dramatic change in diet which will affect…
  • First, thank you for the detailed write up. I think it has been quite insightful to many who have looked on at fasting fearfully. Since going keto, I have fasted for 24 hours on occasion just because I wasn't hungry. However, last week, I did a planned 48 hour. My sole goal is BG control. I don't really have any weight to…
  • First, that is an awesome report. Next, can I buy that A1c from you? Seriously, though, I would agree with your doc about the thyroid partially because eating keto will frequently lower your thyroid function. It does NOT cause hypothyroidism. It simply makes it so your thyroid does not need to work as hard. If you don't…
  • Thanks @RalfLott Like other studies, it is important to note the %. For instance, Freestyle shows higher than the Relion Prime. However, the Freestyles I had gave me a very false sense of optimism as both of them indicated my A1c should have been a full point or more lower than it was, and when testing with it before my…
  • Lately I have been using them as a base for taco salad. Also used some in homemade soup the other day like crackers and found out the make a "snap crackle pop" like a certain carbage cereal does in milk.
  • here are a few older threads that may give you some ideas: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10274397/what-does-your-low-carb-meals-look-like#latest http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10553855/got-any-good-salmon-recipes#latest…
  • A couple of journal articles I think are interesting: http://www.bmj.com/content/353/bmj.i1246 http://www.bmj.com/content/346/bmj.e8707.long They went back and looked at the raw data from old diet studies and found that low and behold replacing animal fats with safflower oil (high in the same omega 6 fats as corn oil and…
  • Here is a related article if you would prefer to read about it more directly. I just thought it was interesting/cool that it was in a podcast that is not scientific/health related. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/records-found-in-dusty-basement-undermine-decades-of-dietary-advice/
  • Not that Minnesota study. This is the one where they used mental institutions and did a double blind where half had all things veg oil (cooked in it and margarine) and the other side at real saturated fat including butter. Cholesterol went down with the veg oil group, but mortality went up - especially for those over 65.
  • I remember when my wife mentioned to me about my snoring going away. She was quite happy about that NSV. Not sure if this is related, but I stopped waking up with fist size bruises.

  • I am in maintenance and consistently hit 70-80%fat. The key is to keep the carbs low and end get enough good quality protein then just eat enough fat for satiety. Feeling faint is probably due to low electrolytes like sodium. Check out the launch pad for this group on that topic.
  • The A1c test is only accurate within 0.5. Essentially, you could be down as much as 0.4 with that result. Rather than just look at this one test, I would recommend you take a long view and watch for a trend. If you next one is slightly up, then it probably is going up. If it is 5.8 or 5.9 or even 5.7, it is likely staying…
  • I have to admit, I thought I would get some views when I started this thread, but it has really been much more productive than I expected. For one, thanks to @midwesterner85 I now know what MODY is. The name is not so important. What is important is that this is something that is different from T1 and T2 and better…
  • I believe crickets can also fit into a keto diet. Just saying.
