  • Cardio and muscle development are completely different. If you'll be playing two times a week, then you'll probably stop feeling sore afterwards in two weeks or so. If only one time per week, you'll probably feel sore the day after for three to four weeks. Not a big deal, just a reminder that getting older sucks.

  • I keep raw celery sticks and grape tomatoes around and dip them in a mixture of salt and parmesan reggiano for afternoon snacks though I also love dried fruit and beef jerky. The latter two are definitely higher in calories than the celery though they provide a good chew and are easy to portion control (1 piece of dried…
  • Sandwiches don't need 'new breads' to be healthy and the health benefits of 'new breads' over traditional sandwich bread are minor at best. Also, healthy doesn't really matter if weight loss is your priority (and in fact, the seeds/grains on so called 'healthy' bread can actually increase calories vs. traditional sandwich…

  • Note that daily weigh-ins are technically the best way to record your data. More data points make it easier to see developing trends. The only reason people recommend against daily weigh-ins is that many people get freaked out by normal day to day fluctuations in water weight, etc. If you can deal with that, then daily…
  • If someone is that intrusive, my initial comment is usually something along the lines of "if I wanted your opinion, I'd shoot myself first. Just keep moving.". Though on a practical basis, so as to avoid having somebody clutch their pearls too hard, I usually just say "yeah, working too hard will kill you too and nobody…
  • Sarcasm doesn't read on the internet. My bad. Either that or sometimes I do think that calorie levels and senses of humor are directly related. But probably just a bad joke. Carry on.
  • Maintenance is fine. It's the diabetes that's the killer.
  • Truth. I ran my first HM the day before Boston and we got the same weather including the ridiculous wind. We ran dead into the teeth of a steady 20 mph wind with much stronger gusts for the closing 7 miles. I trained in cold and rain and wasn't bothered by them. Wind, however, is my nemesis. I never do anything in the wind…
  • That is the proper way to eat/use mashed potatoes. Even better if you use the potatoes as an edible containment vehicle for real gravy. Gravy on potatoes, potatoes on meat.
  • Retire the fitbit. Once you go Garmin, you won't go back. Also, seriously, it's nice to have all of your exercise/fitness information in one place. A very easy 4 miles this morning though it was supposed to be a rest day. The weather was just too nice to resist. Potential rain this weekend so maybe I'll skip my long…
  • I'm the exact opposite. I can't maintain worth a damn but I'm really good at losing! I favor the extreme rather than the middle. My maintenance weight chart is going to look like a seismograph readout during an earthquake by the time I'm done.
  • As you interview and work with a trainer, remember that pretty much anybody can become one. If he/she says something that doesn't seem like it makes sense it probably doesn't. Likewise, if he/she says that you should be using a product that they happen to sell, be wary.
  • I'm actually enjoying sleeping through the night. If I have a few too many in the evening, I tend to wake up at 2AM and not fall back asleep for over an hour.
  • This is based on nothing more than aesthetics but I hate Hokas with a passion. They look so awkward and goofy to me.

  • No issues. It really just comes down to the fact that it can be very hard to fit drinks into a calorie-restricted diet and that alcohol sometimes drives poor choices and/or binge behavior (either food when buzzed, or more drinks than planned).
  • 10K for me this morning. Interestingly, I was only planning a 5K tempo with 2 miles of warm up/cool down but the weather was so gorgeous and I felt so good that I ran almost the whole thing at pace and added an extra mile at the end. Ended up as a new PR for the distance! 5/1: 5 miles 5/2: 6 miles Cumulative as of 5/2: 11…
  • I somewhat cycle my calories on a much smaller scale. I'll generally eat a 200 calorie snack for breakfast, limit my lunch to 600 calories and eat ~150 calories of snacks in the middle of the afternoon. Given that I burn about 500 calories per day in exercise on average, this puts me to a net of ~400-500 going into the…
  • Those ribs are overcooked. The meat shouldn't slide off. It should still have a little bit of a tug to it but yield without too much effort. Southern indeed.
  • Meal prep or make it at work. I pre-make oatmeal containers for the week (oatmeal + dried fruit + sweetener, etc.) and add water/microwave when I get to the office. Ditto egg sandwiches. They reheat pretty well. I also cut a week's worth of vegetables and fruits and portion them out ahead of time so I can grab a container…
  • Pull ups for those times when I'm hanging on the landing skid of a helicopter and need to get into said chopper after it's already taken off in order to stop the bad guy from escaping.
  • I've always been a 5AM exerciser. Only thing that tends to suck sometimes is the need for a 3:00 siesta can sometimes hit pretty hard, and I can get pretty grumpy if I'm not in bed by 10:00.

  • In body scales, tare allows for you to zero out your weight so you can only see the weight of something that you're carrying/holding. Tends to be helpful to weigh babies. 0.2 of a pound is fine precision-wise. That's 3 ounces...not something you would generally get concerned about (unless you're weighing a newborn baby).…
  • What's the logic with a scale that won't show you what you really weigh? Why does that 'feature' exist?
  • I've been cutting back for a few weeks now and am committed to keeping it up through May. We have a new baby at home and it's a bit more stressful than I imagined it would be...the drink tallys were definitely trending higher. Since I quit smoking about 5 months ago I found that my body regularly craves something starting…
  • I'm in for 100 miles this month though my mileage will depend on whether I decide to run another HM in a couple of weeks. I ran my first a few weeks ago and wasn't terribly happy with my time (weather hampered) but I'm pretty sure I can resolve that with one more go. That said, this race is somewhat inconvenient for me…
  • What the heck is intuitive eating? Basically eating what you want when you want it? My body has *kitten* for brains. I would never trust it.
  • Honestly, I've been in the area my entire life and am often in Princeton. I had zero idea that the shop was even there until you mentioned it.
  • It's not even that likely that the cauliflower crust will have fewer calories. A lot of recipes use a ton of eggs and cheese as binders.
  • Oddly enough, one of the other reasons that I don't wear mine anymore is that I lost too much weight and don't feel like taking the time to remove bracelet links or to change the pin settings.
  • I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but you are aware that you can't bring your own food into a restaurant?
