I never travel without my running shoes, and especially when I'm at a conference all day, going on a run either morning or evening is a must for me, and also let's me see the area in a different way. Strength training might be more difficult - I have taken an exercise mat for bodyweight exercises in the past but often…

I typically eat a very high fibre diet, but the evening and morning before a race (HM or longer), I purposefully eat white pasta, white bread with honey, etc. That's something you can experiment on in training. Also, like you say, there may well be porta potties along the course, and you won't have to queue during the…

I've run through the last two winters in Helsinki, and I run to about -10°C (which means not missing more than around two weeks each). I wear long tights and shorts over them (I dont care about fashion at that point), usually a long sleeve running shirt, and a windstopper jacket, a buff and a wimdstopper hat. I get away…

Nothing wrong with adding sugar, and it is also a matter of taste, of course (some recipes just need sugar, too). I already eat plenty of fruits, however, and if I want to limit my total calorie intake, I feel that reducing sugar in my regular meals would be one of the easiest ways to do that.

(sorry, missed your last update, which makes this moot)

I am not a medical doctor, but at first glance, it looks like something external (bumping into something). You can get similar looking marks from strain injuries, however, so if you can really exclude any external sources, it might be better to get it checked out.

I am surprised at how many people would see receiving polite advice as offensive. Why is that - can you not see it as well-meaning advice? If you know better (which, in many cases, you might), then you can simply tell them that, too. Clearly, it would be wrong to interrupt somebody's workout, or to persist when they signal…

As someone who believes that eating mostly, or even only plants can be healthy as well as be part of a more sustainable way of living, and would like to see it become more widely adopted, let me assure you, I know many vegans who find "Freelee" and "Durianrider" extremely annoying and, of course, highly counter-productive…

Yes. Fibre, obviously, is a no-brainer, high-fibre foods tend to all be vegetables. For protein, I think, most good sources ave already been named, but two of my personal favourites are "pulled oats" - that's a Finnish "innovation", which has 9g fat / 13g carbs / 17g protein per 100g - and humble green peas 0.4 / 14 / 5…

Practically vegan, into endurance sports, but not into heavy lifting - I guess 2/3 isn't too bad? ;)

Thanks to those of you who replied to my training-without-a-goal question! I guess, when I am not training for anything specific, i.e. almost all the time, I have a tendency to run every run "by feel", and that means my pace does not vary as much as it probably should. I end up running most of my runs too fast. Looking…

Those of you running quite high mileages, if you aren't preparing for a particular race, do you still follow some kind of training plan, or how do you decide how far / how fast to run each day?

I believe everyone, without exception, started slow - some might be too old to remember now, but I can assure you, everyone starts out slow. In my case, I can definitely still remember my first attempts to "jog", and despite having cycled and played some other sports, I had no running endurance whatsoever. It was painful,…

The title of this thread pretty much sums me up :)

Hi, I'm Till in Helsinki, Finland, where I run pretty much year round (even on ski tracks...). I was a lousy and definitely involuntary runner in school, but I discovered it in my early twenties, and now I am mildly addicted. I'm not running to lose weight, instead I would like to get fitter to run faster and avoid…

Well done, congratulations! And thanks for sharing your story with us. Yeah, reading about your early pace was a bit ominous, but it sounds like you kept it together really well! And you are already thinking about another one? That's definitely not normal. :p

I've started logging today, and plan to stick to it... If you feel that we have somewhat similar goals, and in particular, if you try to reach them through a sensible approach to eating rather than a quick diet, please feel free to add me as a friend :)

Four years late... but if I not me, who, and if not now, when? :) Anyone who happens to read this, please go ahead and reply, and perhaps we can revive the group... seems about time!

Vegetarian, mostly vegan runner living in Finland, I have been vegetarian for some 15 years, and running for 12. Here to find motivation and support, and like-minded people with similar goals might help - at the moment, I am around 10 or 15 lbs over my ideal weight, which, running wise, hopefully corresponds to a sub 80…

I would like someone to discuss my fitness goals with, give me advice and, perhaps most of all, keep me accountable. I am 34, male and live in Finland. I am already "fit", I run regularly, but I know I am not as fit as I could be, and I am around 5-6 kg (10-12 lbs) above my ideal weight. I would like to keep running…

If you click through to the details of the "Experienced" plan, you can see both distance and time estimates. For example, the peak weekly mileage is 55 miles, and the total running time for that week is 8:12 hours. That's an average pace of around 8'55" per mile - I guess, being a week with high mileage, that would be…

I am sure BAA try to find the best possible compromise between filling all available spaces, and leaving as few qualifiers as possible disappointed. As one available space left unfilled would be much worse than one disappointed qualifier, they err on the side of slightly weaker standards than necessary, resulting in some…

If you haven't run even 10 miles, you have no idea what 50 will feel like - yes, it may be doable, but none of us is going to be able to tell you'll be able to do It, or if it's a good idea. You'll have to find that out yourself, literally step by step.
