  • 6 weeks AF today. I am feeling better about sharing this info now because I am more confident that I will not slide back into my former "functionally-drunk" self.
  • 58 and a veteran here...but a dumb one for cancelling my old account.
  • I read your post...saw you joined BeachBody too. Diet will help you lose most of the weight. Focus on what you eat. Knocking 500 cal. per day out of your diet will help you lose 1 pound per week. Exercise will also help with weight loss, but less so. To burn 500 calories when you are first starting out can be really…
  • 5 1/2 weeks AF here...it’s a good group. It’ll be better now that you are here. Glad you found us 👍👍
  • I have been on BP meds for at least 12 years...thought it was hereditary. Never gave it much thought. I did drink a lot of bourbon though. 5 weeks ago I decided to quit drinking alcohol. 2 weeks later, to my surprise, I was able to stop taking BP meds. I never thought I would be able to say this, but: I am 58 y.o. and 100%…
  • Another AF discovery: Workouts (swim, cycle, & run) since going AF have been much more productive, especially in the past 2 or 3 weeks (5+ weeks AF at the moment). I work out much harder now and I am constantly a type of "well-used-sore" because of it ha-ha. Also, my stamina has dramatically improved.
  • STEP #1 - I quit counting laps (much-much better!). STEP #2 - I just swim for time now. My goal is 1 hour minimum, freestyle. Still major league boring so I go over things in my head, usually a project I am working on or bible passages. Break them down into fine detail. Sometimes my mind wanders, but it helps the minutes…
  • @ElC_76 If I am in a bar situation or a cocktail party...My go to drinks, besides water with lemon, are Club soda and lime or an Arnold Palmer (half tea half lemonade) if they have good tea. BTW - Arnold Palmer's are usually pretty good at golf club-houses (i.e. the 19th hole) - you will have to experiment with other…
  • Today is 5 weeks AF. I noticed being AF is a lot like saying how old a baby is. You start out with days, then weeks, then months, then years. NOTE TO SELF: I am guessing that between 2 and 3 months I am supposed to switch from weeks AF to months AF
  • @fh1951 Saw your post...bought the book. I am about 1/2 way through the book. I knew many of the things in it intuitively and I do exercise 4-5 times per week (run, swim, cycle)...but the book (so far) is very good nonetheless. I recommend it as well. BTW - I am 58 and have just entered my second sprint-tri. For my first…
  • In... Just had annual blood draws yesterday...curious how the results will turn out with 5 AF weeks leading up to it.
  • @MountainLaurel787 I am glad you decided to join us. Please don't be a stranger and jump in and tell us some things. I used to wait until 8:00 PM to start drinking...the wife headed to bed around 9:30. No telling when I would make it...but that was the old me. My wife is very supportive about me being AF, but I don't…
  • I am sure you will get some great advice on what to do exercise-wise. My only suggestion is, if you have not exercised in a good long while, ease into it over a couple of weeks or so. You don't want to get so sore following your first few workouts that you give up. You also might want to provide a bit more info. Do you…
  • OP - I have the same experience with distance swimming for time. While not specifically sore in any particular place, I do feel "very-well-used" for a day or so following a good, hard workout... i.e. - Soreness is not required
  • OP - I read that study and the one thing that they did NOT reveal was what the fitness level, weight, BP, etc. of the participants that developed the heart attacks or strokes. If most of their participants were obese already, that may have been the major contributor. You may recall a study once upon a time that said…
  • I drink whatever...In that situation, trying to blend in, I would drink club soda with limes or diet anything with limes. Adding the lime makes it look more like a "cocktail"
  • I don't think I was clear about my meaning. I am proud to be here at 1 month AF. What I was meaning was, even though I still have to stay focused on the AF goal, there are so many more positives that I never knew existed 1 month ago, that it is just much easier to stay AF at 1 month than on Day 1 or week 1.
  • Chick-fil-A sauce = 140 calories If you opt for sauce with your meal, steer clear of the Chick-fil-A sauce. It has 140 calories and 13 grams of fat. Better choices include:* Buffalo sauce (10 calories, zero fat) * BBQ sauce (45 calories, zero fat), and * Honey-mustard sauce (45 calories, zero fat)
  • This is not as big of a deal as when I was 1 or 2 weeks AF...but today is 1 month AF.
  • The iron man video was so cool....thnx for posting it 👍👍
  • I am an engineer, so I do get along well with “the numbers.” But WTH happened to the tax code?! Explain Qualified Business Income to me please. TaxAdvisor.com has 27 pages of examples 😳
  • Swimming, freestyle, 1.25 miles, fast pace
  • I wanted to do the "woo" button - but there is no way to imply it was done while dripping with with a heavy dose of sarcasm ha-ha
  • OP...I am 58 and entering/training for my second Sprint Triathlon. My friends say I am nuts but I think they are. They eat, drink, smoke cigars, get heavier and heavier, bad knees, bad hips, diabetes, high BP, etc. Their main activity is watching movies/TV and eating out. There are a few exceptions, but very few. I plan to…
  • I managed to get off of Lipitor and BP meds using diet (75 pounds off) and plenty of exercise. The statin was easiest to get off of when my doc finally quit harping on my total cholesterol and started paying more attention to the good:bad cholesterol ratio. My total cholesterol is still high...so I still monitor annually.…
  • Thank you all for the responses...I feel better knowing that others have experienced the same sweet cravings. Instead of stopping for ice cream after the gym this evening, I got sushi instead.
  • While I was drinking, I rarely, if ever ate sweet things like cake, ice cream, candy, etc. I didn't want it and never cared for it. Now that I am AF, sweet things are truly AMAZING. I really have to watch it because, you know - ice cream. I am not sure why I find sweets so delightful now. Has anyone else experienced this…
  • I read ^^^this^^^ article and I totally missed the smokers versus no smokers component before posting the original article. Mark Twain probably said it best - There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics. The original article probably falls in the "statistics" category.
  • My wife was gone on a trip this weekend. In the past, I would get a movie she would hate and blast it on the home theater while getting a helluva bourbon buzz going. This weekend I got a movie she would hate and blasted it on the home theater while drinking club soda with limes B)
  • And I found the actual study if you like technical articles... https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2724778
