Indoors on the trainer again. May 3: 8.0 miles, 39 minutes, average speed 12.4. Today I did a little better at keeping my cadence smooth. Tried to stay between 60-63 rpm for a while, then 65-68, then 70-72, and so forth. My cadence is still far from perfectly even, but just paying attention made a big difference. This…

Just indoors on the trainer. 😥 Rain, rain, go away. May 1: 7.6 miles, 35 minutes, avg 12.9 mph.

Well, my April held 9 rides, for a total of 90.32 miles and 8.5 hours, including both real rides and indoor trainer time. Although I'm sure my actual mileage is probably about 6 miles less, to account for any indoor rides before I recalibrated my bike computer. Let's see if I can get to 150 miles in May!

I fixed my bike computer, yay! Recalibrated the odo/speedo so it's accurate for my wheel size (apparently changing the battery made it decide that I had bigger wheels?) AND got the cadence sensor working! No idea how I fixed that, but there was cleaning and wiggling involved. So in honor of my freshly working computer, and…

I obsess over everything, Daisy. In fact, I'm so OCD I use Cronometer in addition to MFP so I can track my nutrients down to the individual amino acids. In my defense, A) I'm a nerd and I adore numbers and spreadsheets and graphs, and B ) I'm in the process of transitioning to a 80%-ish plant-based diet. Coming from a…

I have tried straight potassium chloride and find it unpalatable: too bitter and with an odd aftertaste. I do cook with the 50/50 light salt blend as well as use it for my table salt, and can taste very little difference between it and regular iodized salt. That said, I'm not a good cook (just now learning how at age 58…

Most common one in the US is Morton Light. That's what I use in cooking and for table salt. Cuts my sodium intake in half and replaces it with potassium chloride.

@gregcault The dubious smoothies can grow on you 😆. Using frozen kale and spinach in them rather than fresh seems to reduce the green flavor, and because the greens are blanched before freezing, you're actually getting greater volume. I also throw frozen or canned sweet potato or butternut squash into mine (not a huge fan…

Remember, my goal was 15 miles this weekend. I rode until my bike computer said 15 miles (and barely got back in time for my son's school bus.) But MapMyRide told me I'd only gone 13.7 miles! Uh-oh, I think it's time to recalibrate my computer. 13.67 miles, 95 minutes, average speed 8.6 mph. In defense of my sad pace, the…

@sijomial I'm sorry your ride was cancelled, but better to be safe, yes? I think you're sharing your weather with Chicago. When I checked the forecast this morning, our weather is expected to deteriorate rapidly. Tomorrow is now going to get colder by the hour, with rain turning to snow. Brr. So I raced through my work…

BTW, that's 5 oz white potato, 1/2 cup cannellini beans, my weird personal smoothie concoction with frozen kale, spinach, and mashed sweet potato, 2 cups spinach, 1.5 cups strawberries (they're getting mushy), 1 small zucchini. The seasoning I used on the baked zucchini had nutritional yeast as the main ingredient, which…

I'm actually over the new RDI (4700 mg) today, assuming I follow my planned meals exactly. Believe me, today is an anomaly; I'm more usually in the high 3000s. Here are my top potassium foods for the day, plus coffee and a gala apple with skin.
-
Oh, no! That's terrible, @sijomial 😥 The worst thing about organized rides is that once they're organized, they're immobile. Sadly, if the weather is too nasty to actually enjoy your ride, there really isn't any point. Hopefully the bad weather will hold off a day or two. If not, take the day off and go out solo on a day…

A lot of people love traditional strength workouts, but as an equestrian you might consider cross training your horse in dressage? That can be a killer leg workout for you, not just for your horse! Or three-day eventing if you're a little crazy, or still young. Hunter/jumper uses a lot of core stability, and works your…

Good luck with your surgeries, Allie! And make sure you stay safe. I used to worry a lot about gay bashing; lately I'm twice as worried about trans bashing. There's a stupidly large number of haters. Whatcha doing in order to get in the best shape of your life? I started out just with a weight loss goal in January, but for…

5.42 miles, 36 minutes, average speed 9.1 mph, elevation gain 132 feet. I can't vouch for the accuracy of MapMyRide, since I did the same "hill" four times and got this ride profile: Today I did some grinding up one of the longer local slight inclines (more accurate than saying "hill"), to try to build up my poor,…

Ah, but I'm not talking about eliminating ag subsidies at all; just the opposite. What if we subsidized crops by lowest calorie density? Take funds from Peter the cattle producer to pay Paul the lettuce producer? Told you I was talking crazy.

Most of Asia: Rice porridge (or "congee")...so delicious with a touch of soy sauce and the tiniest drizzle of sesame oil. Comfort food at its best! A little protein, a little fat, a good dose of carbs. Japan (Tokyo and Chiba City): The soups are fabulous and healthy, for the most part. Sushi is yummy as a treat, but raw…

And afterward, as well! I lose weight very quickly (and gain just as quickly). But it can be hard to tell, because it then takes months for my weight to redistribute.

I started my maintenance when I had 2 or 3 pounds remaining to goal. Basically just trying to figure out what my exact net calorie intake should be. I lost those 2 lbs during my first maintenance week, oops. I've continued bumping my net calories up, and I've still lost another 6 lbs. Your body is a funny thing, and it…

Stephen, while I hurt for your gains, I must say I'm inspired by the fact that you post your weight faithfully, instead of hiding. You make me want to promise that I will follow your example and post my weight every week, gain or loss. But like every step of this journey, a promise is easy, and follow through is tough. So…

@mtaratoot Thanks so much for the pep talk. I needed it after last night. I don't mind eating extra calories when I'm hungry, that makes sense both in my head and in my gut. It was the screaming, "I WANT IT!" that scared me. I may just hold off on the pizza a bit, until I'm not so freshly into maintenance. It hadn't…

Last week's total was 28.53 miles, if you're willing to count my indoor trainer mileage. Today's "long" ride was planned to be 12 miles, and I did 12.7 miles. That's about 20% longer than last weekend's "long" ride. (I'll be grateful when a 20% increase gets me more than 2 extra miles, but it's my own fault for getting fat…

Let me try a little preemptive craziness here. What if we priced food by the calorie? More calories = more expensive. Celery, lettuce, spinach, kale, cabbage would be nearly free; fresh fruits and vegetables would be very reasonably priced; grains and beans would be mid-range; lean meats would be more expensive; fatty…

9.9 miles, 45 minutes, average speed 13.2 mph I needed to sweat today, so my bike is back on the trainer. 😓 About 66% harder gears, 33% fast cadence work. I'm seriously looking forward to a gorgeous weekend with a long (for me) ride on Sunday. Goal for this weekend's ride is 12 miles. I feel ready!
-
Hill climbs today, insofar as you can find a "hill" around me. Which is to say, enough for a lady of questionable age and even more questionable fitness, especially after so long a hiatus. 40 min, 7.8 miles, average speed 11.6 mph Max speed 27 mph downhill and I didn't panic! 👍
-
I figured out my new goals for the next 3 weeks. Next weekend long ride 12 miles Following weekend 15 miles First May weekend 20 miles (bigger stretch) Continue the two additional shorter, more intense rides during each work week, indoors or out, depending on our *beloved* Chicago weather. Concentrate on improving cadence…

Oh NO! Without Doritos and potato chips, how will I live? Really, every source I've checked so far (if I'm honest, I'm just watching YouTubers to start, and slowly picking out those who resonate with me, like Mic the Vegan and Simnett Nutrition) references Dr Gregor and Dr Esselstyn. Today I even downloaded Dr Gregor's…
