  • Sorry, Dawn. Individual rudeness is so much more obvious than the daily acts of being considerate that fill our lives most of the time. I think about the nurses who stood facing the WI protesters on April 24. They were silent, masked, and still. Their message was much louder, in the long run, than that of the armed,…
  • I was reacting to this from your original post--"We lose more people to the flu but we don't let it rule out lives." That concerns me because it is factually incorrect. What is wise or intelligent needs to be based on correct information, so I wasn't able to assess the meaning of those words in the context you gave them. I…
  • I discovered I didn't know the difference between "a little bit hungry occasionally" and "really hungry all the time." So my initial efforts--thinking I *was* being careful--were too restricting. By slowing my rate of loss from 2 lb/week to 1 lb a week, I found I was much more satisfied with my intake and not thinking…
  • My dad grew up in MI and lettered in football twice, b/c his initial high school (Hartford?) had to close during a polio outbreak while Milford H.S. stayed open. They are not that far apart, so I suspect a quarantine did take place b/c otherwise Milford would have had it, too. In unrelated-to-Covid family history about MI,…
  • Without your sex, age, height, and weight, it's hard to know what your cal budget would be. As a 61 year old woman who is about 5'8" and 220 lbs, a sedentary job (for now, at home), I "get" 1530 plus any exercise cals. That's for losing 1 lb/week.
  • Day two of NO intentional exercise. I just decided to take a break and rest and see how I do without extra cals provided by exercises. Yesterday I had eaten 3/4ths of my cals by 11:30 am, and still finished under goals. Doing fine today. I will resume walking tomorrow when it's warm again. Tired of the chill.
  • Sorry, but that's just not true. We average between 40,000-75,000 flu deaths/year and are well over 80,000 in 3, 3.5 months of Covid. Fear isn't controlling anyone I know--compassion is. I'd be happier to get this if I knew I would then be immune. But I certainly don't want to take it to others less likely to survive,…
  • Are you new here? The idea of trying to burn 2000 in one day b/c of one day of overeating sounds really uninformed, which is why I ask. If you ate 2000 calories over your maintenance cals, then maybe you slowed your weight loss to goal timeline by about a week. You don't need to do anything but think about how often you…
  • WI is chaotic. My county has issued a health order to replace the Governor's order struck down by our Supreme Court. But only one other county has done the same (Milwaukee County and Dane County, the only counties with sizeable cities; other counties have spikes but aren't issuing orders). A friend in a county without an…
  • Rainy but not too bad. Can't decide how much mess I want to deal with--dog park or no. Radar has diarrhea (sorry if TMI) so maybe no for him. Skye can go on loop trail with me--leashed. We will see. I'm not very motivated to do anything right now. How is everyone holding up? We are in chaos out here in WI, b/c idiots are…
  • Carefully follow the advice of bmeadows380, above; the items in the MFP database vary by ridiculous amounts for the same item. I use USDA when I don't have a pre-packaged item (and I weigh prepackaged foods to verify their individual mass/calories). If you only recently resumed intentional exercise, then water weight from…
  • Good morning. Another lovely spring day in WI--we get too few. I started some jogging this week and my whole body is tired again :) I'm going to walk in the flat dog park today--no hills, no jogging. It will be rainy tomorrow so I will walk my local loop ('way fewer people when it rains, hahaha) and put in a bit of…
  • I have been mourning the absence of taco trucks on every corner for nearly 4 years now. There are none near me :(
  • Just to clarify--500 cal deficit per day = 3500/week = 1 lb a week lost rate.
  • Sara, that is good news. You will appreciate this. My supervisor can be a total d*ck. Today he was ragging on my co-worker and me for something I had actually taken care of. He forgot. He's overwhelmed with Covid--school closures have created an awful lot of extra work for everyone. So he's stressed. I get it. But of…
  • Not a surprise, but I am so disappointed. Madison was already ramped up this week; who knows what it will become like now? I'm social distancing, wearing a mask inside stores (only the grocery store, about once every 10 days; one outing to a pet store every month). I work from home and take daily walks at the dog parks,…
  • Yes, I assume almost everyone knows that by now and that was not the question. The rate of new infections can exceed the rate of recovery even after the initial stage, if people aren't taking adequate precautions. People don't seem to understand that.
  • Hey to all. Just finished my lunch time dog park walk--only time for 1.5, but it feels good to move at that time after being online working all morning. We are--I hope--into "warm only" weather for a few months now. So nice to have a sunny, breezy day in the low 60s. Feels so good to move in that fresh air. I was totally…
  • Good morning from sunny South Central WI. Hoping for the predicted warm-up, and right now it's already the high from yesterday (43) so looking good. Not much on my agenda other than work and walk. My kids need junk food so I guess I'll swing by the store at some point, too. Maybe I'll just send them. I planned to get up…
  • Why do people assume flattening the curve is a one-time thing? It only makes sense that an unchecked spread can and will climb steeply. Failure to maintain social distancing, hand washing, and mask-wearing are a gift to the virus. I would expect it to be worse now b/c so many more people have it--not enough for any…
  • It's so nice to hear more about everyone. @tazzy2911, welcome. I was in Ireland in 2016 for my son's high school graduation gift, a tour of England, Ireland, and Scotland. We visited the west coast--Galway, Aran Islands, Ring of Kerry, and Killarney National Park. We had so much fun, so many wonderful walks and drives. I…
  • My sister takes care of our mom, and mom is suffering from isolation. She's a very social person. She wants to get her hair done--she's had the same hair stylist for about 15 years and they are very close; she misses her. She also wants to visit the nail salon. Sis was making a point not to tell mom that salons for hair…
  • This thread is such a good one. Lots of little tips here to help others. Thanks to everyone for their great ideas.
  • Greetings and Happy Mother's Day to all with any babies--grown, furry, or otherwise. Not all of us know each other really well. Can folks post their "babies," using initials or whatever else makes you feel comfortable, so we know who you consider your children? Me: Quentin, 30-works full time in cyber security; Cole,…
  • Sounds like folks had a nice Saturday. I drove 45 min to a dog park I had heard was a 5 mile loop; nope, just one mile. So the dogs and I did about 3, and then 2 later this evening, for 5 total. It felt really good. Right about 60F and sunny and breezy. Tomorrow is supposed to be 50s and rain, so I probably won't go out…
  • I still think that if the adjustment part bugs you, stop syncing. Stop setting for 1200 expecting an adjustment. Set MFP for sedentary and losing 1 lb/week and log your exercise with a realistic estimate of those EXERCISE cals. Ignore everything else. You are seeing only part of the math when you look at your diary, and…
  • You Australia folks seem to have done a good job. It can be hard to watch other countries manage so much better, from the perspective of someone in the U.S. with 4 vulnerable family members and 2 in high-risk occupations. I'm still amazed my sister on the Navajo reservation is well, as is her daughter. Sis has an…
  • Well, I finally see the scale moving again. It's a little scary to me that my sedentary calorie budget is 1530 with no exercise--and I weigh 220 lbs. I know in my mind I'm thinking, "I won't be able to eat anything when I lose a bit more." I have to take a deep breath and realize that will not be true. Losing weight will…
  • I've been working the system here on MFP for over 2 months and had to make a lot of adjustments at first--too hungry, overeating as a result. After 4 weeks I realized I had over-adjusted and was stuck at the same weight. Rather than freaking out b/c I "lost" 4 weeks of work, I simply adjusted again, moderately, and figured…
  • Don't sync. Just manually add your exercise cals that you plan to eat back. Keep the % from total burned consistent. Adjust the % if you find you are losing too fast (and too hungry) or too slow. I play with the minutes of my exercise to get the correct number--I measure my walk/jog cals on a separate site.…
