I have had a very similar experience with my father, who also is an undiagnosed bipolar. (His sister has been diagnosed and hospitalized for it). I am so sorry for your loss.

Bullchips. Parents who say mean and critical things often do it for the same reason that non relatives say mean things--to make them feel better about themselves. There is a huge difference between a little blunt talk from a well-meaning parent and the type of comments the OP relayed in her post.

I didn't have time to read all the responses, so I apologize if I repeat some of the advice. Your mother is toxic. Please don't take that the wrong way--it doesn't mean that she is worthless, or that you shouldn't love her. My father is toxic, too (in a different way--not comments about my weight). The way to deal with…

Great idea for a thread. And congrats to everyone on their successes! 1) I put on my smallest pair of jeans this a.m. and they are sagging. 2) I no longer rush upstairs to change after work because my pants are no longer so tight they hurt (instead they are now loose) 3) My ribcage sticks out when I lay down. 4) I have…

You can do it. Just focus on one day at a time, and get back on track. Start somewhere, and keep adding "good" behaviors until you get where you want to go.

This--all of this. I was stuck in this spiral, too. I recommend the Beck Diet Solution (no, not a diet plan)--it helped me change my thinking/relationship to food. If you buy it rather than get it from the library, a friend told me the workbook is really helpful (I wish I had bought it, too).

2/3: 2.75 mi run 2/4: 0.35 mi elliptical 2/5: 2.5 mi run

I went slower than the recommended 3x per week in the beginning--listen to your body! If you want to still work out, do yoga or strength exercises at home (i.e. low impact) to cross train. I definitely think the reason I am still sticking with c25k is that I listened to my body and went at the pace I needed to (I'm in week…

I rarely post to these, but girl, I just gotta say: Awesome! :flowerforyou: I began my long (tl;dr) journey in January 2007 (ooh, a "resolutioner"!) Seven looong years later, I am 44 lbs down from that high (low) point, after two pregnancies, multiple job changes, and just life in general. Love to see others who take the…

2/2: 0.75 mile walk (it's a start!)

In for 45 miles. I didn't make the (overly ambitious) goal of 50 miles last month, but I am still proud of 39.5, which was a 9.5 mile increase over December. Hope to see the elusive 50 by March at the latest.
-
Ok, I had hoped to hit 40 miles, but didn't quite make it due to the snow insanity here. Final totals: 1/31: 2.5 1/30: 0.5 1/29: 0.6

Way to go, Sara, already knocking them out!!! Thanks again for this thread. [edited b/c I finally figured out how to bold stuff]
-
Took a 1.41 mile walk at lunch. Weather and schedule not cooperating this week, but still hope to hit 40.

I think about all the reasons I want to lose weight (I have them written down in my phone). If I am stressed (I am a stress eater), I try to do exercise instead, or take a bubble bath. If I want a coke or a glass of wine, and I can't fit it into my calories/food plan for the day, I have bubbly flavored water. I also make…

Vicki, that is great that you had a good lesson! I am impatiently waiting for better weather, too. I hope everyone else posts updates periodically! So far, I have: Practiced flying lead changes for the first time ever! Had a really good lesson that day, but had to skip this past weekend. Still working up my courage to tell…

Not looking good for getting there--gonna at least hit 40 miles, which is still 10 more than last month. 1/21: 1.05 m 1/22: 1.2 1/24: 2.5 1/25: 0.5 1/26: 3.0

Oh, it has been brutally cold. I am regretting not putting on my long underwear beneath my suit pants today. And that is my NSV: my smallest suit, that I couldn't even wear last summer, is too big! I need to go clothes shopping!!

Thank you! I never thought about trying to run in place to slow down. Probably easier to slow down first off the treadmill (I'm kind of clumsy). Will give it a go, and maybe drag out the inhaler, too.

I am almost halfway through the couch to 5k program. In the past I was never able to run--I have exercise induced asthma and running (and stairs) is a big trigger for me. I couldn't even run a mile in high school; would have an attack half way through. However, so far I have been able to do the intervals in c25k without…

This is exactly what I was thinking. I want to go over and give them a fist bump, cause I used to be a lot bigger and I know how that feels. It sounds from your posts that you struggle with emotional eating, so I want to recommend a book that helped me tremendously: the Beck Diet Solution. It has helped me work through a…

I am starting the body by you program--strength training with body weight. No jumping required.

Oops, screwed up the ticker in my last post:
-
1/20: 3 miles Still behind, hoping to get walks in every day this week at work. I might still make it!
-
Argh, had to make a new ticker. 3.5 miles for 1/17.

Wasn't able to do day 5. Made it the first 40 sec, failed at about 20 sec in the 2nd rep. Will try again today and count Thurs as my rest day (had to skip due to sked). Like a pp said, may try a longer (20 sec or so) rest this time.
-
Well, I wasn't going to go over there, but now I'm sold! Heading to FB....

Way to go! Good job going back to it. I haven't ventured over to free weights yet, either, but I have been seeing gains on the machines, and I can do a heavier resistance on the pull-down than my DH now! It feels great to get stronger.
-
Love the ideas here! Once I got to onederland, my "big" reward was horseback riding lessons--I was finally under the weight limit for most barns. That has turned into a full blown, once a week obsession, which has also inspired me to start c25k and hitting the gym more in the hopes of increasing my stamina and strength. My…

Day 3 (beginner) done! And the stretch in my calves felt good, so it inspired me to do a short yoga routine, too, before bed! I noticed my forearms are tending to point inward, so going to pay more attention to keeping them parallel tonight.
