4 incredibly hot, humid miles today. Ouch. 7 miles mtd, slow start since tomorrow is an off day. Will pick up this weekend.

And runners twist ankles, lifters pull muscles, and in extreme circumstances swimmers have even drown! If you're looking for a completely safe physical activity, you'll be looking for a while. Do what you enjoy doing and in the unlikely event that you get hurt, take a few days off and put ice on it. It's the nature of…

My impulse is to say that it will be hard for you to get your heart beat up doing water running when you're used to running. That said, I've never tried water running so it might be worth a shot. Have you considered swimming? I know of a few people who have done their first triathlon after a running injury forced them to…

Body Glide helps with this, but even with Glide I get it occasionally if I wear loose fitting shirts. You can also get Nip-Guards specifically for this purpose. They apparently work really well, but I haven't used them. Mostly I just wear compression shirts. That solves the problem entirely for me. I also wear compression…

I wear compression shorts under my jogging shorts to prevent chaffing. They've started making jogging shorts with slightly longer compression liners, I don't wear underwear with those.

Rule of thumb is always work on either speed or distance, not both. A distance run (and in c25k they're all distance runs because you're always running farther than you did the last time) should never be at your fastest pace. You should be able to speak in complete sentences while running at a distance pace. Maybe not…

If she said she was sore that'd be one thing. She was having toe pain and shin pain. Both of those indicate specific problems that can be easily traced to fit and type of shoe. She's been doing this for long enough that the shoes shouldn't have needed breaking in, and she's doing a program gentle enough that she shouldn't…

I hate them both. I'd rather go outside and run in the open air with cars and people and scenery. To each their own of course, but unless it's pouring our I never do cardio on a machine. Even if it's pouring I'd rather do an Insanity video, but since I'm half marathon training I need to stick to the treadmill if weather…

Starting slow, 3 mile speed run at around 30 seconds faster than my normal pace. 3 for the month.

"Running is so terribly upper-middle class..." I don't think that's very fair. At "normal people" (say under 200 miles a month) mileage you can wear the same pair of shoes for 6 months or more; and they usually cost between $100-$150 a pair. Shoes are really the only serious investment you need for the sport. Name me…

"People have been living on fast food for for decades, so I wouldn't look at that for a solution..." "People have been vitamin D deficient for decades, so I wouldn't look at that for a solution..." People have done lots of things for years. Some of them are good ideas, others simply the result of ignorance or…

Saying you don't like cardio because the machines bore you is like saying that you hate food because peas have a funny texture. I love to run, but bugger me if I want spend ten minutes on a treadmill. Plenty of great suggestions throughout the thread, find something you enjoy doing, don't torture yourself on the dreadmill.…

Late run! 3 miles yesterday and 5 today takes me to 110.

The answer, as always, is "it depends on your goals". If you're just trying to lose weight it doesn't matter very much. You will burn fractionally more calories with a longer continuous workout than two short ones, but not enough to worry about. If you're trying to improve cardiovascular fitness you want to keep your heart…

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_4/134.shtml It's a program to take you from a moderate distance running routine to a half marathon in 12 weeks. You're maybe a hair under their recommended "start place", but you're way more than 12 weeks out from your event so you have plenty of time to add a few miles a week before…

Have you talked to your doctor? That sounds like serious medication and I'm not even going to pretend to be able to give you advice on the feasibility of running as a hobby while taking it. If you have not done so, I *strongly* recommend talking to your doctor, and finding out what, if any, affects of that stuff are on…

I hate to badger, but you have had your gait checked and they told you that you had no gait problems? Or you're not aware of any problems with your gait because your gait seems fine to you? I ask, because lots of problems with your gait are essentially invisible to you. You can't watch yourself at ankle level from behind…

RICE: Rest Ice Compression Elevation Take a few days off, ice the injured area, keep the injured area compressed (compression socks would be great), and elevate your leg when you can. You'll probably be fine in a week or two at most. Nearly everyone gets a minor injury at some point, don't let it get you down. If it's…

I usually bring workout clothes on vacation, but I don't let myself be "forced" into it. If the mood strikes or I have some time and energy I'll go for run, otherwise I won't. You won't see a huge drop in your fitness in week, so don't worry too much. Most Disney Hotels have huge pools, so if you feel really guilty swim…

I don't swim a ton, but I occasionally get in a quarter mile here or there. I switch strokes to work different muscles throughout the workout. It keeps me from getting as tired too, since no muscle gets overworked.
-
Can you up me to 120? It looks like I'm going to be around 110 this month, and I wanted to up my mileage next month.
-
Unless you're pretty short, 200 pounds isn't overweight enough to warrant a "special" exercise plan. You should be able to do just about anything. Hell I'm over 200 pounds and I'm training for a half marathon. Granted I'm a 6 ft tall guy and 200 isn't terribly far off of a healthy weight for me. Still even at 5'4", 200…

This is actually a whole catagory of races now, including the Tough Mudder, the Warrior Dash, the Spartan Race Challenge and the Run for Your Lives Zombie Infested 5K just to name a few of the more popular. You're not crazy, but be prepared for the challenge of a lifetime. I've done Run for Your Lives and I'm considering a…

7 miles this morning takes me to 102 mtd. Made it with two days to spare. Maybe I should up next month to 120.

Everybody is going to suggest their own favorite activity, so I'll start with mine. Find a 5k in your area around two months from now as a motivation, then checkout Couch to 5K (or C25K as it's often abbreviated). A great way to get into running, and races are tons of fun. C25K will get you from nothing to running a 5k in…

4 miles this morning takes me to 95 mtd. Almost there!

Count me in again. I'll shoot for 110 to up it a bit. Thanks for doing this, it's morivating.

You're asking like three different questions here. The first is "I'm 5'11" and 180 pounds, but the BMI chart says I'm overweight. I don't feel overweight so what's the deal?" The answer to this one is tough without more information. I'm 5'11" too, and 180 is my current goal weight. I think I'll look really good at that…

BMI is an average. It's very definetely not accurate for everyone and people with a very muscular build are certainly likely to be "overweight" by BMI. It's a pretty reasonable target for most people, but can be very wrong for some. That said, it's rarely so far off that you can weigh 175% of "healthy" and still be...…

Did a 4 miler this morning taking me to 91 for the month. Tomorrow is off, but I should get my Hundred Sunday if all goes well.
