  • It sounds like you went to a shoe with less heel to toe drop. It's a classic when people switch to barefoot, VFFs or minimalist shoes. On the plus side, your calves are getting stronger
  • It does sound like too much too soon. Do the Rest Ice Compression and Elevation to help get the inflamation down. You should also think about trying to walk very lightly. When you get back on your feet, walk around barefoot a little and see what it feels like. Bend your knees more and take shorter step. The last think you…
  • I would say try going true barefoot sometimes to supliment your training. I ran a 5k barefoot last week. My technique is always better when I'm barefoot. I agree with the previous poster on why the switch to VFFs?? When I'm not barefoot I'm in Merrell Road Gloves. I get more blisters in those than I do w/o shoes at all! I…
  • Great info. Thanks everyone.
  • Thanks again to everyone who replied. This was very helpful. I'm planning to do a longer run on Saturday and I'm going sign up for the 5k on July 21 and shot for a PR and see if I can place. It's a small race, so that makes it easier.
  • Thanks Scott. I've never done a run of 90+ minutes duration. Do I just go at my usualy easy pace (about 10 min/mile) until I can't go anymore and then walk/run the rest of the time?? Or, should I keep my pace and add to my current duration (40 minutes) 5 or 10 minutes a week and build up? Thanks everyone else too for all…
  • Ah. Lactic acid = pain. I get it.
  • Thanks for the input. What makes the 5k painful? I've heard that a few times. This is so true!
  • Wow. I didn't realize getting sub 20 would take that much work. That's a lot of running Carson, that qualifies for an awesome! When you ran the 5ks were you going all out and trying to PR each time?? It sounds like I'm on the right path and that the distance training will dovetail nicely with speed increases. Thanks for…
  • Thanks Carson. My offical PR is 27. I ran a 2.6 mile (the course was messed up) in 21 but I was saving myself for a sprint at the end which never happened. I can run sub 8 minute miles on my home course which is pretty hilly and i'm just beyond a "conversational" pace. It sounds like continuing to build my endurance should…
  • That's so great! Contrats!
  • This is great! I say go for it. If you run a race, just make sure you're in the back of the pack. I almost ran a 4 or 5 year old over on Saturday at the start of a 5k race. The Dad have him in the under 30 minute group and it was a pretty tight course.
  • Try letting it steam in the bag a little to get some moisture on it. We put Cholua powder on popcorn once and the crunching vaporized it and we both started coughing from spicy powder hitting our lungs. It was pretty funny. We never totally solved that problem.
  • I was thinking about reading Chi running to just to get a little more perspective. It good right? Ken Bob mentions it as well and says it's very similar to his method except with the body lean. Ken Bob has a pelvic lean but an upright posture vs. the full body lean of Chi and Pose. I'm glad your back feels better!
  • Congratulations! That's a great story. How did your legs cope with the increasing distances??? Did you get soreness or anything like that? I was going to use 1/2 mile increments as well but every other week so I can get up 26 miles in the next year.
  • Thanks Carson. I'm only up to 5k distance as a new runner and it is a challenge to run right at that sweet spot of fast but not too fast. I was amazed when I paced myself properly in my last race how many people that passed me in mile 1 that I blew by in mile 2. It's super fun and getting a new PR is this best!
  • Two thoughts... 1. The OP may have just been trolling. That's a pretty bad question. 2. Some people think they are cool when they belittle others. I hope it makes them feel better.
  • Uh, don't all the enzymatic reactions in our bodies requuire heat?? I think we kinda are furnaces actually. Paleo is fine, but it's clearly not the only way.
  • I put frozen berries in mine. They are always on hand.
  • I do remember Zola Budd. The barefoot wonder. I read about the South Africans and how they don't allow shoes a much later age. Nike et al have everyone convinced that step one in learning how to run is to go to the running shoe store.
  • I think the blister was from pushing off. I'm trying to do Ken Bob's technique of lifting the toes up as I land. My toes are still pretty soft and plump. I hope more lifting and less pushing fixes it long with a little time and toughening. You might want to try doing to toe spreading exercises. Hopefully the BodyGlide…
  • Well, I did buy an autographed copy of his book in print to augment my digital copy. 20 Bucks!
  • I KNOW. He does free workshops all the time. I was the only one who was there. People are missing out. I'm so lucky to live only about 30 miles away. He's in Huntington Beach, CA.
  • This sounds awesome!
  • Hang in there! It does take time. You'll get better. Also, you might want to do some online research on how to run well. You might be using a lot of energy running ineffeciently. I use barefoot running to improve my technique. I'm no expert, but improving my form makes the running much easier and less tiring. I HATED to…
  • Thanks! I was only on the grass a little actually. Most of it was paved trails in the park. Some of the pavement was pretty rough. We did some dirt trails too. Ken Bob calls grass "dessert" because it feels so soft after running on the pavement. I HIGHLY recommend the minimal footwear. My Merrells are great. More important…
  • That's cool. My wife is doing walks with me in socks right now. She doesn't like to get dirty. Try some easy running on harder surfaces and see how it goes. Listen to your feet and try to run softly. Don't call it jogging, that's too much pounding on your joints.
  • Oh, you live in that kind of city!! I have a lot of tree debris on the roads around me. Some of those small seeds and such can be painful. Well be careful!
  • This is a great story and I hear this all the time. I've yet to meet someone people who has a stress fracture but people always say the doctors see them. That being said, I am taking it slowly. I'm doing mostly barefoot walking now and some short runs. I do my normal runs in my Merrell Barefoot Road Gloves which are great…
