  • Tikka masala and korma are both two very creamy sauces. When I eat Indian food I either treat it as a cheat meal and eat what I want, or I go for lots of tandoori meat, a chapati and channa palak (I think?) which is spinach and chickpeas.
  • You will always lose a percentage of lean body mass when in a calorie deficit. If it's less percentage-wise than it was before you started doing bodyweight training, you're on the right track.
  • Use TinyPic or Facebook, there's no bandwidth limit. Facebook doesn't resize for forums though, and I believe TinyPic uses uppercase BBcode, so make sure you use lowercase img tags.
  • Put it in if you want to. It can't be more than 150 calories for a rough tablespoon. Your deficit shouldn't be ruined by 150 calories, you'd still have a rough 2450 calorie deficit for the week, over .5 of a pound.
  • Sorry, but I don't understand a thing you just said. You'd lose a slight amount more weight but total weight loss will be the same? If you're trying to say what I think you're trying to say, the thermic effect of food is the same for x amount of calories whether it comes primarily from protein, fat or carbs, which is where…
  • A higher protein diet is no more muscle sparing than a higher carb diet if you're not doing adequate work to retain muscle mass. Eat paleo, do an hour of cardio a day and no lifting and see what happens to your body. Throwing in "eat more protein" without tacking on "lift weights" is misleading.
  • If you're in a caloric deficit you won't build any appreciable muscle mass, unless you're undertaking some serious strength training (squats, bench, military press, deadlift, etc. with free weights), and even then your "gains" will cease after a month or two. Your body requires adequate fat, protein and carbs to build…
  • I don't know your stats (height & weight) but 1000 calories is far too low. I would estimate at least a good 500 calories more than that for the average individual.
  • These people are precious few in comparison to the amount of "ethical" vegetarians.
  • 1500 is too little for a person of 250lbs, I don't even think you can get adequate protein from that. Eat a few hundred more calories. You're female. Your calorie needs are less than a man's. You're also almost twice his age (sorry), you need fewer calories due to that.
  • I admit I find this weird, too. But I think it's more to do with how other people perceive what they're eating. Like, you can't tell the difference between a quorn sausage and a real sausage unless you're eating it... maybe it comes from a desire to not feel like an outcast. Although I don't know any health benefits to not…
  • I make sure I'm full and have planned times for snacks, so they work out as mini-meals, rather than "snacks". For example, yesterday I ate half a tub (125g) of quark, mushed up with a medium-sized banana, with a tablespoon of peanut butter mixed in (looks like banoffee pie!), for a snack and that held me over until I had a…
  • Your diary seems a little incomplete, it's hard to say if eating habits are your problem. Going solely by your stats, I'd say that it's about time to stop looking to lose weight and start changing your body composition. Put on a little more lean mass by lifting weights, maintain a slight deficit (enough to lose .5lb per…
  • Also in the PCOS squad. No meds. I agree with lifting weights & seeing a doctor (better still, an endocrinologist), and I've lost all of my initial weight (I'd still like to lose about 30lbs more) using just a simple calorie deficit and following low GI principles. I basically get my carbs from whole- or minimally…
  • I'm setting up a website as we speak. I'll start you off with a low-low monthly payment of 39.99, and decrease it to 19.99 after a year for loyalty, but only if you buy my branded products. I have pink sparkly nasal drips that do loop-de-loops like a crazy straw. It makes not eating fun!!
  • Close. I'm actually eating about 1650 at 5'4 and 160lbs (let's say). I make up my carb allowance from what I have left over in terms of calories once I get my protein in. But I can make it up either way I choose. Tomorrow I might choose to eat more carbs than protein, the next I might choose high fat & high protein, low…
  • I think the best course of action is to have somebody come into your home, feed you your EXACT BMR via a nasal drip so you don't have to contend with the pesky notion of eating adequately, and strap you up with some ab belts, a few muscle-toning pads and put you to sleep on a weight-loss vibration plate. In 3 weeks, and…
  • As above, that 5lb was likely a good amount of water weight. 1lb a week is perfect. I also sometimes think that people get hung up on "1lb a week" or "2lbs a week" and forget the bigger picture. If a month from now you're lost 5lbs, you weigh 5lbs less. That's great. It's progress, it's a LOT of progress. Rome, as they…
  • No. A 3500 calorie deficit per week will have you lose 1lb per week, whether you get it from a diet of meat, rice & pasta, vegetables or ice cream. The health benefits or pitfalls of any/all approaches are for you to contend with. I would presume you'd get very hungry if you ate nothing but ice cream all week, though.
  • I could cry, I really could.
  • It seems like you're already being quite obsessive over the same thing. Why would you want to force yourself to be miserable and continue with something that obviously isn't working? Yes it takes time and effort to log your food, it also takes time and effort to continually do the wrong thing. Every day you sit there…
  • I ate ~200g of carbs today and almost the same in protein, about 40g of fat and still hit my calorie goal. High protein doesn't mean you have to low carb. High carb doesn't mean low protein. Vegetarians and vegans losing weight and not being "skinny fat" is enough of a case to make that point. Skinny fat isn't so much a…
  • I'm drinking a freezing cold Coke Zero right now (this & Diet Coke... I prefer the taste to regular Coke). It's my first one in about a month. I usually have a cup of rooibos (plain) around this time, but tonight I wanted Coke since it's hot. Aspartame, at that level of moderation, is fine. Bloody hell, even lead at that…
  • This. Pinch the skin on the back of your hand, then pinch the skin on your belly. You're in good shape, I would suggest listening to the others and taking up a lifting regime with a small, sensible calorie deficit. And don't worry about loose skin, it's barely noticeable and will get better over time.
  • I think you might have issues with understanding how "normal" people regulate their weight. A summary of how they do it is: they don't. They just don't obsess over small details and don't they don't weigh themselves often enough to know that they've gained a smashing total of 2lbs. On the other end of the spectrum is the…
  • http://breakingmuscle.com/womens-fitness/the-dirty-little-secret-of-the-female-athlete-cellulite It's a genetic predisposition as far as I'm concerned. You can't do anything specific to get rid of it.
  • I think a big issue with this is that - and I can say this, having once been very obese - as a fat person, VLCDs and the general "eat 1200 calories" advice produces a result that's so stark in contrast to the "lose 1lb a week" advice, it must be hard for people to go against what is anecdotally correct for them. I mean, if…
  • I find it amazing how many times you can say this same basic principle to someone and they don't understand the most fundamental concept of a calorie deficit. I get that a lot of people won't care or know how to find out about changes in the metabolism as they lose weight - after all, you have to know what you're looking…
  • You could try telling him why it's important to you for you to change your lifestyles together. Maybe he hasn't noticed how much someone else's health problem incited change in you, maybe he hasn't had the same realisation of mortality. If, perhaps, you have these fears that your husband will end up the same way, perhaps…
  • Planning in advance is key. I also usually have some leftovers in the fridge or in the freezer I can cook/reheat/eat cold for a quick meal. Getting over the psychological battle for something "tasty" even though your belly is full is something that comes with time and habit, rather than little tips and tricks - I find.
