I still slip up - I lost 50 lbs and let 15 slide back on. Been trying to stop the tide since I noticed I had gained 5, but didn't really get a handle on it until I hit 15. My advise? When you backslide, don't beat yourself up about it. Acknowledge the backslide, then get back on the horse. Remember you are making life…

My husband is a bit shorter than yours, but is still slim and trim. I am about 4 inches shorter than him, but usually weigh more... sometimes considerably more. A couple years ago I bit the bullet and joined Weight Watchers (and I said I'd never pay to lose weight!). It took about a year and a half, but I lost 50 lbs and…

I have worked for many years with children and adults who have developmental disabilities, and I think the person centered perspective I have learned from being in this field applies to people who have a weight challenge as well. You should not say, "the autistic (substitute: schizophrenic, mentally retarded, downs…

Irregular periods and some hot flashes/night sweats. After about two years my periods stopped all together for a year... then one more just to remind me of what I was missing. None since (about 3 years, I think), but my internal thermostat is still broken. Sometimes I hot flash to this day, and I can only snuggle with my…

I agree. Layers are my friend, and hopefully yours too. People think it odd that I'm wearing a short sleeved light weight shirt in the winter, but I also have a sweater (I like zip or button front, not pull overs (too messy on the hair) that I put on or take off as needed. Some carry little battery operated personal fans,…

That is wonderful news! I know the first time I lost enough weight to fit into sizes that surprised me, I felt like I was walking in the clouds! Keep it up. Is there any one thing that you think has contributed the most to your success?

1) Bring something you are ok with eating... Fruit (grapes? love the red seedless!), Make a low-fat dip with a fat free yogurt base and lots of vegie sticks (don't forget things like snow peas, jicama and even some fruit slices like apple), or I'm really into almost any flavor hummus and vegie sticks (stick to the 50…

I was period free for almost exactly one year, then had a period. I guess it was a last hurrah, because there was never another and it has been about 3 years now.

I had trouble on WW when they switched to the points plus system and I was no longer accountable for the quantity of fruits and vegetables I ate. I would caution that even though zero points, you need to learn a reasonable portion, especially for fruits. They made them zero points so that you would depend more on fruits…

I'm short and older, but still stick with the 1200 calories - plus a little exercise which a sometimes eat off, and sometimes just let it add to my deficit. It is hard to get good, well rounded nutrition on less than 1200 calories. I would caution against doing less than 1200 in the long run.

Granted I have a female body rather than a male's, but I would caution to be patient, stick to what has worked so far and let your clothing and/or measurements be your guide. Remember you have made a lifestyle change, not just a temporary diet. Don't let yourself become discouraged over a mere 5 lbs when compared to the…

I lost 50 lbs and then over the last year gained back about 12 of them. Very frustrating! And I kept trying to stop the gain, unsuccessfully. The two biggest roadblocks to maintenance I think are these: 1. Losing weight is not so much a diet as a lifestyle change that needs to be maintained for the rest of your life. If…

"In a way though, January is easier for me to not really think about food much. I've tired of all the holiday baking and cooking and really ready to get back to just basic and healthier food choices! " Good point. Though I don't eat normal junk food during the holidays because there are so many seasonal treats. And I'm…

Put whatever he uses for sandwich filling in one or more container/baggies and add a baggie of whole grain crackers for a change of pace, as in cheese and crackers, peanut butter and crackers, tuna salad and crackers, etc. Also yogurt can be a great staple and is delicious mixed with a little crunchy cereal (bring separate…

So many reasons (read: excuses) for the shape we are in!!! My biggest w{h)ine is that I'm 60, my caloric needs are way down, but my appetite continues at the same level as when I was young! Hang in there, December Child... remember it is not just a diet if you want to be successful, but learning a way of life that works…

I've had quite a few bone density tests in the last 10 years. I had osteopenia, and moved into osteoporosis a couple years later. I took calcium and D, but wasn't totally consistent. Dr put me on a weekly (Atenol) along with the Calcium and D. I've had to stop the Atenol a couple times - once when I was having some dental…

Who among us has NOT ever rewarded ourselves with food? That's part of the reason many of us are in the shape we're in, and battling to unlearn some of those self-destructive habits. It sounds silly, but go out and buy some colorful little stickers - stars, hearts, whatever. When you deserve to reward yourself, plaster a…

Hey, thanks for the response - I've been out of town without internet access. Yes, logging helps, but I've been logging for years - first as a general thing, then because I was in Weight Watchers, and now just because it seems to be the only thing that truly curbs my roving eye for the nummy extra anything - extra serving,…

I just got back from a "girls" weekend and caught up on the last few posts. Thanks for the suggestion to check my thyroid. I go to my doctor every three months to monitor the meds I'm on anyway, so I'll ask if the blood tests he does routinely would show thyroid function. I don't think this is my problem, but it's worth…

I'm 60 also, just joined this group and am AMAZED at the number of "youngsters" here. I thought we would all be "old farts." LOL. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that I didn't have to face menopause issues until my 50's. Not that I was very successful in keeping the weight off even in my 30's and 40's. It's been a…

I have just joined this group too - I posted a topic on the Support and Motivation board: Does age effect the ability to lose weight. I got a slew of responses and was alerted to this group. I too am sick to death of trying to stay motivated because I am just as frustrated as you are. I am a fighter, but really! It gets…

Amen, thank you for understanding where I was coming from. I have worked and worked on my lifestyle - I now eat 90% from the perimeter of the grocery store - fresh, whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, skim or low fat dairy, chicken, fish, lean meat occasionally, good quality bread or whole grain pasta sparingly,…

Wow, thanks for the responses already! I will check for some of these already created groups, and all your comments really encourage me to think about both what I know and what I know but haven't acted upon. Like, I know I need more cardio and should add some weight training. I walk, but otherwise do not have a regular…
