I have almost always made the first move. Unfortunate, now that I think about it.

I'm a woman, but I started at the weights listed. 45lbs is an empty olympic bar, if you need to go lower, perhaps dumbbells are the way to go. The idea is to progressively challenge your muscles, so as long as you keep increasing weight, you should be good. ETA: the poster above makes a good point, try the bar first.

Just throwing this out here, but I think you're missing the point. I believe it is offered as a courtesy. She mentioned how she always offers to pay but is never taken up on it. It is rude to insist, therefore staying within the cost parameters set up by the person paying, is courteous. She will not be inflating the bill.

Jeez, Burro. If you'd change those every now and again, the "gnomes" would leave. I am not angry at all today. It's been awesome. I'll try again, tomorrow.

Just a clarification. I am an active and involved parent and I know what my son is capable of. I also know that he is planning on being an engineer, so he has ambitions to go with his abilities. Failure wasn't going to happen, but not getting something he wanted (honours), but had to work for, made a huge impact. Learning…

Last year, my son did something similar when he was in grade 7. My new junior high kid, was a little full of himself and figured he knew everything. At the beginning of the year, I tried to talk to him about study habits, homework, etc. He's always found school pretty easy, so figured he already knew all that I was trying…

That is wonderful! It sounds like Stryder's future is bright. Kudos to you for recognising that you didn't have the time necessary and doing all you did for him.
