You drink more water because you are no longer storing massive amounts of reserve water in your glycogen stores (which become depleted when you enter Ketosis). Acetone breath and increased urination would not be found in a low carb diet without being in ketosis. And if you're in ketosis, that mechanism increases your…

I'm with zivasak. The biggest things to remember with a low carb diet (especially a ketogenic low carb diet): When in doubt: 1) More Water 2) More Electrolytes (Potassium, Sodium, and particularly Magnesium) 3) More Fat

Every single day, loss or gain. Gives me an idea if I'm plateauing (weight staying the same for a period of time), or if I did something that brought me up and then I'm coming back down. I don't think weekly would give me enough data points to determine whether it was a plateau, or if there was a spike and then the weight…

BMI is mostly useless on the individual level. For making observations across large populations, though, it's really handy, and exceptionally easy to use. Let's face it: most people with a BMI that registers "Obese" are not elite bodybuilders. I agree with most others - a much better test of where you are as an individual…

Is the end goal just to lose weight? Someone could eat nothing but celery all day every day, and they would lose weight. Someone could eat nothing but twinkies under their maintenance calories, and they would lose weight. Are either of those options particularly healthy? No. Yes, if all people are trying to accomplish is…

The best way to be helpful is to positively reinforce behaviors that are not HURTING someone, while making it clear that it's not the best way for EVERYONE. The placebo effect is absolutely real, and telling someone that they're an idiot, even though they're eating more healthfully and are actually losing weight, is *not*…
-
I agree. Everyone is more concerned with being correct than being helpful.
-
But it is. You took her direct address to you ABOUT your statement, as in "You are correct, ndj, but we could be nicer about it", as meaning "ndj, stop being a douche".
-
This is how the conversation went, in a nutshell: Person 1: Rawr rawr rawr, you're WRONG and I'm RIGHT Person 2: Hey man, if what they're doing helps them, and others are struggling with the same inflammation/overeating/water retention issues, let's just make sure they know it's more about the deficit. Person 1: WRONGITY…

She was obviously replying to your statement, not specifically saying you were the douchie one. She was responding TO you, but not ABOUT you. The reality is, there are ways to be correct AND helpful. Most people were more focused on being correct, which came across as condescending and aggressive: ie: douchie
-
If you had said "Nope, but there's a non-b**** way of correcting people"... I don't think it would have been jumped on. Everyone here who the statement applies to is more concerned with being CORRECT than being HELPFUL.
-
Saying "Hey, you're being kind of douchie" is not calling someone a douche. I've acted douchie from time to time - does that mean I'm a douche? Nope. Everyone has moments where they come across as overly aggressive and condescending. Let's try not to do that, since it puts people off. A lot of posters are being…

Well I'm obviously not deluded enough to think it was 12 pounds of fat that I lost. But the fact that I had at least a large percentage of that as retained water is pretty telling. The point was that I'm eating a calorie deficit but I don't actually FEEL like I'm eating a calorie deficit. When I was eating a whole host of…

This is interesting. My own experience thus far with Keto is that it's actually easier for me to eat a calorie deficit than when I was trying to do "all things in moderation". I have an unhealthy relationship with carbohydrates and sugar (thanks, ancient ancestors!). The one thing that made me seriously consider Keto was…

Half & half and Splenda. Delicious. I like dark roasts, and I think the cream and sweetener really bring out the richness of the flavor. It's just too bitter by itself.

I just want to say that I'm pissed at everyone on here who is quoting the starvation mode MYTH. Because that's what it is - a MYTH. Your body ONLY goes into starvation mode if you are already UNDERWEIGHT. And chances are, the OP wasn't eating under maintenance anyway. They probably just didn't log half the stuff they ate.
-
Just think - pretty soon you'll be in the 2oughts!

Silly. Platypi are monotremes! They're mammals that lay eggs! Of course they won't have belly buttons. :P

LOVE THIS I am vegetarian because I think it is morally disgusting to rear and kill other living creatures for our own warped gratification. We don't need meat, if we were carnivores and we had no choice I might feel differently, but given I have been perfectly healthy for the last 22 years on a vegetarian diet, I don't…

Ignoring that I would never actually hire a trainer in reality (so we're speaking hypothetically here), I would not hesitate to have an obese trainer. Almost all of my coaches throughout high-school were obese, but they taught me a LOT. It's not about them being able to do it - it's about them being able to figure out how…

The best way to prevent it in the future is to plan it. Plan some time to just eat what you want - that way you realize that you can be super strict the rest of the time, and then friggin' RELAX for a day. If you start planning your "bad days" they're a sign of your control, not your lack of control. They don't become…

I would just like to respond to the person who pointed out the high rates of osteoporosis in the American population, even though we consume massive amounts of dairy. Do you know why this is? Because people are getting their calcium in products that have little to no fat. This is because Vitamin-D, which aids in the uptake…

I eat a serving of red meat about once or twice a week. Most of my protein comes from chicken or turkey. I'm not particularly picky about the meat that I eat, so there's no specific "cut" that I go for. I like stews and soups that have red meat in them, but I rarely sit down and have a slab of it. During my period I…

Just because a man plays video games does not take him out of the running for being a good man. My Dad and I play video games together and get excited about the same games coming out. He played video games with me and my brothers when we were growing up, and it was awesome family time. He also coached several of the sports…

That's what "weighs more than" means in the comparative sense. Obviously one pound of muscle is going to weigh the same as one pound of fat. But given certain size parameters, 1 cu ft of muscle is heavier than 1 cu ft of fat. Just like a pile of feathers weighs less than a pile of bowling balls, if the piles are of equal…

What an awesome book. Thank you for reminding me that exists.

One book that will blow everything out of the water: Good Omens - By Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett. Yes, that's right... Neil Gaiman AND Terry Pratchett. How can you resist?

I can't recall who said it in this thread, but the whole "wear the underwear you'd want the hospital to see if you've been in an accident" is very silly. Depending on how bad the accident is, you might have your own little "accident"... and the last thing they're going to care about is how presentable your underbritches…

My husband will every so often come up to me and squeeze me really hard and yell "You're sho shkinny!" or occasionally just start callin' me "skinny" as a nickname. I'm trying to be supportive of him - he's not trying as hard as I have been - by getting him to join MFP or something, because I think he's eating far fewer…
