And Taco Bell was off by 50%, and they *are* a big chain that drills their employees to be careful about portioning. If I wanted a packaged meal, I'd buy a frozen dinner. If I'm paying to eat at a restaurant, I'd rather have something the chef was inspired to make than a strictly controlled clone of a corporate recipe. You…

Hire an Olympic lifting coach? I was just talking to one last night about the differences between OL and PL, and it seems like it could be what you're looking for. If nothing else, they should at least be able to figure out ways for you to lift without hurting yourself. I doubt you're going to get The Answer from a bunch…

Didn't see the original post, but yeah, "heavy" is defined as a percentage of YOUR 1RM, not in absolute lbs. If the person had posted that they were doing deadlifts with 2.5-lb dumbbells, guessing that it's not "heavy" is probably a safe bet but who knows, maybe they have some muscle wasting disease and their max really is…

It is bones and muscles and organs and stuff, but "stuff" includes water and blood and other things that you need less of if there's less of you, so yes, you can go under that amount (which is probably good because a 5'4" woman with 157 lbs of just muscle/bones/organs would have the entire bodybuilding community beating…

People really have no idea. Part I think is just geometry - the difference betwen 350 lbs and 400 lbs doesn't look like nearly as much as the difference between 200 and 250, because volume. Part is being used to seeing bigger people. Part is that when people lose weight their bodies go all crazy and do nutty things like…

If you can afford a trainer, I totally recommend one, at least for a few sessions. You can put together a plan on your own, no problem, but having someone who can watch you and get your form right is way more effective than trying to figure out all those diagrams. (Although that "so you think you can squat" series of…

Seconding the elevated pushups - you can use a set of stairs to vary the height nicely. The big thing that helped me was planks - core weakness can hold you back too.

Doo de doo, don't mind me - oh, this bar? Just carryin' it into the locker room to weigh it, totally normal, nothing to see here. ^Me at the gym. SO SMOOTH. Oh and the 35-lb bar is a "ladies'" bar. Or so I've been told. Right now I'm looking forward to Max Lift Day at my gym - I know it's sometime in April but I'm…

Don't overthink it - it really is as easy as 1) Do less cardio and then 2) Lift heavier things. Pick any good beginner program (Stronglifts, NROL, whatever) and just do what it says. It will feel weird in the beginning because "everyone" seems to know that for women to lose weight they have to jump around for 2-3 hours a…

It's supposed to be short. (15, maybe 20 minutes on the outside.) If it's easy, go up to the next level!

Part is that you remember you don't know anyone's story. I had a co-worker tell me just the other day that she used to weigh over 500 lbs - you'd never guess it looking at her, you'd just see what she looks like now. A guy asked me for help with his form the other day (and his form was terrible, I'm glad he asked instead…

Those scales don't measure composition changes very accurately, so I wouldn't even bother measuring when something weird like getting sick happens. You're probably dehydrated from being sick, which is part 2 - water measures as "lean body mass". And I hold 3-4 lbs of water from creatine, and I'm smaller than you. So yeah,…

I am a terrible person; I saw the title and expected this to be a three-post thread. But it warmed my horrible little heart anyway, so :flowerforyou: I also like seeing all the other people who've been married for 13 years. Hands up everyone else who got married in 2000 so they'd be able to figure out how long they were…

It depends on how many sets/reps you're doing. I was really surprised, when I started working with my trainer - what I considered "couldn't do another rep" was actually "didn't want to do another rep" and I could usually bang out five or six more when he made me, so we upped my weights really quickly in the first few…

I don't have that model, but when the battery is going on mine it will either put my HR in the 60s or around 220, so it could be that your battery is bad. It could also be that the transmitter is bad. At least it's cheaper to replace the battery than get a new one, so it can't hurt to try.

Yes, especially if you were restricting before - you're going to be holding a teeny bit of extra body and a lot of extra water. Give it 2-4 weeks and readjust if it seems like you're gaining way too fast or slowly, or 4-8 weeks if you seem pretty close to what you expect.

Ignore the sugar recommendation. Depending on your calorie goal, you can go over by eating two pieces of fruit. Personally I wouldn't eat those instant oatmeal packets because I don't find them filling and can eat tastier things for the calories, but if you like it and it fits in your daily diet, I wouldn't worry.

And not to scare you, but an ulcer can also feel like hunger pains. (This is a worst-case scenario, though.) Best to go see a doctor - they can help you figure out if it's a food sensitivity or whatever. If you can't, you can at least start with an elimination diet and see if that clears things up.

This is probably heading in the wrong direction. The thing about getting your nutrition from whole natural foods (which I think is a great goal, just one I don't share ATM) is that real food isn't that tidy. All those entries in the USDA nutrition database are averages - nutrient content is going to vary depending on where…

It can! I always had narrow feet, and when I got pregnant the last time they smushed out into half-size-longer wide feet (which is apparently pretty common, yay pregnancy). I didn't lose the weight for a long time and figured they were permanently smushed. Just recently, they've gone back to being narrow. I'm going to get…

The protein is a minimum, so over is fine. Good, probably, unless you're getting most of your calories from protein and then you can have issues. The sugar is completely stupid. Take it right off your tracker. If you're diabetic, you can keep it but do what your doctor says, not what MFP says. It's based on recommendations…

I'm really sorry this happened to you. The thing I found out when I had my miscarriage (at 20 weeks along) is that once you get to a certain age, pretty much everyone has had one but they'll only tell you when you do. So you're not alone, it's a big boat we're all in. Take time and be kind to yourself. When you're ready,…

Definitely take a class if you can. It's not so much that you can see them doing the poses, it's so that they can see you and tell you how you're doing it wrong, which a video won't.

10.5 narrow, which is a huge pain in the *kitten* because for some reason most shoe manufacturers think they don't have to make half sizes over 10 or narrows over 8. Anyway. Really what you need is to go to a real running shoe store (like Pacers, not Sports Authority) and get them to analyze your stride and try on like…

I used to go at 5. Really glad I don't have to do that any more. Now I don't even wake up until 5:30.

Ooh, yeah, done that one too. Also worn my shorts inside-out, and my shirt both inside-out and backwards once. After that is when I started having my coffee before I left for the gym...

I've noticed I get over being sick way faster. I still catch the same number of colds (two kids and a husband who's a teacher, I swear, they bring home everything like they're building a virus zoo) but they only last 2-3 days instead of 7-14. Wish I healed faster, that's awesome. Stupid ankle, WALK BETTER.

Pretty much any excuses, but especially "I don't have time." No, you don't make time. And that's fine if you have other priorities, but dag, own your choice.

Loose skin happens. There are way more terrifying things to be afraid of - it's not like loose skin is going to rise from the grave and eat your brains or suddenly explode your car or anything. Weight training will help some; you can start with a bodyweight program or if you have a gym go with Stronglifts or New Rules of…

You can't guess. You really need to figure out how much you're burning and how much extra that requires you to eat, because you can outeat an hour in the gym in five minutes. And then you need to track what you're eating to make sure that you're not eating too little or too much.
