Someone once gave me a great piece of advice just as I was starting out on a 4-year degree and feeling a bit daunted about the length of time it would take. They said 'That time will pass whether you do it or whether you don't, but if you do it, at the end of the 4 years you will have your degree". That advice really…

I agree that it's best to have a minimum and maximum weight you are comfortable with. My 'target weight' was 67 kilos and for the past year I have been either just above or just below that. I weigh myself every morning and the scales can be up and down every day, but it never goes up above 68 and never goes below 66, so it…

I think there was a general syncing issue yesterday as my Fitbit wouldn't update either. Posts about things not working are often better sited in the 'Technical Issues' forum, as I believe that the MFP techie help people look there.

Re buying a water filter. You don't even need a jug - just use a filter bottle. The Bobble bottle is great - they come in different sizes and it filters the water by the bottle. Takes away the taste of chlorine etc to make the water taste neutral. Definitely worth the minor investment:…

I agree with all of the above. Thinking on this as a 'diet' dooms you to failure, because if you 'go on a diet' then you can 'come off a diet' -and as soon as you do, you immediately start to 'reward' yourself (usually by bingeing on all the foods you denied yourself while 'on a diet') and put the weight back on. I spent…

Seeds are also an excellent way of adding in calories in a healthy and satisfying way. Add hulled hemp seeds to your breakfast cereals or smoothies. Add mixed seeds (like pumpkin, sunflower, linseed) to lunchtime salads or sandwiches. Also adding ground almonds when you are making a smoothie will really add in calories and…

Each person's biochemistry is unique and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another - and I think each person has to make up their mind as to what suits them. I was interested in the fact that the OP was citing sources that linked gluten and leaky gut. I had leaky gut, but mine was caused by candida…

Your body will always try to find a balance - it's what it is designed to do. It is aiming for efficiency of resources. So if you eat the same number of calories per day and do the same exercise every day for weeks and months on end - it eventually finds stasis. Yes, I too found that I stuck at the same weight for about 12…

I've been on MFP for 575 consecutive days. I've been on maintenance since last October. When I was losing, sometimes it was accurate but sometimes not. I once went for 10 weeks when every single day it said 'in 5 weeks you'd weigh.... and every day I ate under my goal target - and yet the scales didn't move.....and then…

I spent 14 years of my life on a 'diet-binge' cycle. I started out aged 18 wanting to lose 7lbs and put back on 10lbs. I lost 10lbs and put back on 15lbs. Eventually I was swinging 70lbs. At 35, I came to the conclusion that diets make you fatter! So I stopped dieting and promised myself I would never diet again and I…

Funnily enough I only used to weigh myself every couple of weeks when I was losing - I didn't even own a pair of scales and used to weigh in at the gym on a Sunday morning. However, I have been on maintenance now since last October and at Christmas just past I got a set of Aria wifi scales. Since Christmas I have weighed…

Exercise is anything that gets your heart pumping - On days I can't get to the gym or go to a workout class, I try to build exercise into my day - at work I use my lunch hour to go for a walk and choose places with steep hills. I run up and down the stairs rather than take the lift (my office is on the 4th floor). I walk…

I never 'drink' my calories - that always seems such a waste. So no fruit juice or sugary drinks or alcohol. I just drink water and herbal teas and have done for the past 10 years. One exception is an occasional monthly breakfast 'smoothie' - but I always use whole fruit and vegetables and usually add a bit of protein like…

I am 5ft 5in and weigh 67 kilos and I'm on maintenance - all my parameters are on 'healthy' in terms of weight, body fat etc - so maybe you are at a really good weight for you and you don't need to lose weight? The closer you are to a goal weight the harder it is to lose - but sounds to me like you maybe just need to tone…

Weight is not the only measure of success - and it is also notoriously unreliable on a micro level. I have been weighing myself every morning since I got my Aria wifi scales at Christmas - I am currently on maintenance and my weight has been pretty stable at 67 kilos for around 10 months - however although I say 'stable'…

I achieved my target last August and have been maintaining my weight to within a pound for the past year. I believe that having 'over' days are extremely important. Constantly eating to deficit makes your body believe that there is a lack of food and your metabolism starts to slow down to match the decreased food supply.…

I agree with most of the posters above who extol the virtues of drinking water. A couple more suggestions: A water filter makes tap water taste much better as it takes away the 'chemical' and chlorine taste. A slice of lemon or lime, a strawberry or a slice of cucumber in the water can give it a little flavour. I drink…

Best way to state it then, to be correct, is that 'muscle weighs heavier than fat by volume' - that then shows that for the same volume of space, the muscle weighs heavier because it is more dense. So if you add 'by volume' then there's no argument (although I'm sure some may try) :)

Another way I like to use it is in refrigerator oatmeal (see a variety of recipes at www.theyummylife.com).

A great wee recipe you might like to try for those indulgent moments when a slightly healthier cookie is called for: Peanut butter and Chickpea choc chip cookies 1 x 400g tin of chickpeas, drained, rinsed and patted dry 2 tsp vanilla essence 165g peanut butter 80g agave syrup 1 tsp baking powder Pinch salt 90g chocolate…

Porridge is a dish made from oats. In Scotland the traditional way to make it is pinhead oatmeal or rolled oats cooked in water and a pinch of salt. Sometimes people make it with milk or half water/ half milk. They can even add sugar - but that's just for Sassenachs. It is called porridge all across the UK and parts…

I had a dreadful experience with a Chiropractor. Went with a simple stiffness with my hip. He did xrays, said that areas of my back were fusing and pushed me into having a course of treatment that cost me a couple of thousand pounds. I ended up in absolute agony with my shoulder and neck. I stopped going and was in…
"Did you not clean the house before you used MFP then? I wouldn't count that as exercise if it's something you've always done"
Actually I would disagree - any movement counts as 'exercise' - walking, running up and down stairs, doing gardening and housework. I use a fitbit and it records movement and…

I lost 30lb eating an average of 2000 calories per day. I have been on maintenance for 7 months and still eat an average of 2000 calories per day. Sedentary maintenance for me would be 1600 - I just make sure I do 400-500 extra calories worth of exercise to allow me to eat 2000. If I want to lose, I do 500-600 calories of…

They are made by the Nakd company. I only seem to be able to find them in the bakery section in WholeFoods. I'm in Scotland, UK. The Nakd brand make lots of healthy snacks with nothing articfical in them. Generally just smooshed up fruit and nuts. Worth checking them out if you've not come across them. In fact if you…

Interesting - I am on a day off today so have had some free time. I watched both videos (yes, including all of the 1.5 hour one) and read Alan Aragon's blog and every single one of the responses underneath. It's taken me the best part of 4 hours to watch, listen, read and absorb the arguments presented. There are things to…

I agree, it's good. This is a recipe from 'theyummylife.com' and I've been using it for about 6 months now. It's is one of my staple breakfasts. However, I am dairy intolerant so I don't use milk or yogurt. I use a 1/3 cup of oats and then use rice milk. One 1/3 cup plus another half of a1/3 cup measure of rice milk is…

I used to find myself bingeing on stuff I later found out I was allergic to. For some reason if you are intolerant, it can compel you to eat it. Once I eliminated those foods (wheat, dairy, sugar) I found out that I didn't binge any more. Alternatively it could be a psychological issue where food represents a form of…

Nicely written and well constructed piece showing that you've finally got your head into the right place to succeed in the long term. In never having an end goal you'll never get there - you'll continually readjust what you are aiming for as you reach each short term achievement. 'Reaching target can often be self…
