DOMs or burn isn't an indicator of effectiveness. An indicator of effectiveness would be muscle growth, or strength\endurance improvements. Squats, or any other exercise become effective, when you work at a level that is challenging enough to force the body to adapt. For you that might be 40kg, for me that might be 150kg,…

Just train for what you want to achieve. If you want to be a sprinter, thrower, jumper, weightlifter, you need a lot of power, as you need to apply full force in short amount of time. Applying a huge force slowly is worthless, as once the object being thrown has already left your hands, or your body has left the ground,…

Will give this a go. Looks more promising than most recipes which produce horrible dry stuff that goes straight in the bin!

As a competitive weightlifter, I'm always in the gym. I'm always happy to have friends who are into strength training, as although the weight loss buddies I have are great, their goals are different from mine.

If you can overhead squat 50kg, the regions I mentioned previously, are probably in not too bad shape. If you normal squat 50kg, I really don't think your legs are too big. I've never come across anyone who genuinely had legs that are way too big for their upper body, and some of the guys I train with have some big strong…

...but how much can you squat? leg press =/= squat Can you overhead squat? Without actually seeing you move, it's impossible to say for sure, but shoulder popping is likely to also be linked to the rotator cuff muscles, scapular positioning and thoracic spine mobility.

if you're going to do Olympic lifts, you need bumpers. I assume the OP isn't though, as they specifically said they do not want bumpers.

I wasn't saying it was the best way of doing it, just that we have no idea what the trainer has in mind for a plan. We could post here guessing until the cows come home, but surely it's easier just to find out directly from the trainer. With this information in hand, it becomes a lot easier to make a decision about what to…

Your trainer, may or may not be good, why not speak too them, and see what they're thinking. Maybe the trainer is working on a progression towards deadlifts? I see tons of people do horrible deadlifts, with fully rounded backs, hinging from the lumbar spine and thinking they're the man (it's predominantly guys) because…

I'd also imagine Birmingham University would be able to do it, as they are quite popular for sport. Failing that Loughborough would definitely be able to do it, and they're not a million miles away.

Not an accurate measure, but these images will give you a ballpark figure, so you can see if you're close or way off. http://www.builtlean.com/2012/09/24/body-fat-percentage-men-women/

Sorry to go off the topic of the thread, but I was curious. If you power snatch 105, I reckon you could squat clean at least 170, and maybe near to your squat limit of 180. How's your technique?

LOL! I was actually waiting for the disagreeing response from the moment I clicked post!
-
Some good points raised already. Another contributing factor is body language and tone of voice. In real life, it's possible to disagree without being aggressive, and to have a civil discussion, despite having different viewpoints. On the internet, because you cannot see the other person, or hear their tone, you miss the…

There is no right, or wrong answer, it depends what your usage will be, and how much you want to spend. What other devices do you have? If you're already well into the Apple ecosystem with ipod, ipad etc... then the mac makes sense. If you use a lot of windows software, then makes sense to stick with a PC. You could even…

I have the butterscotch, vanilla and cherry bakewell (I get through this stuff quickly!). I've only used the butterscotch a couple of times so far, as I'm obsessed with the cherry bakewell, but it was really nice. I haven't used the vanilla in a shake yet, as I mainly use it for making pancakes and suchlike.

Meant to add, if anyone has ordered the lemon shortcake or apple cinnamon, please post a review of what it was like, as I haven't tried these flavours yet, but was tempted to give them a go next time I order.
-
LOL! Cheers, it's win-win because you get free protein too. Post your code up, and then the next person can use that. My motivation was to recommend a decent protein and a decent company as I've been shafted by some others before, not collect as many referrals as possible, so happy for anyone else who signed up to put…

Do you not like resting? Going to the gym is important, but so is resting, it's when the body recovers and builds more muscle - adding weight and strength. I would class the body pump as cardio, rather than strength training myself. Have you ever considered using the free weights, rather than machines? In particular, if…

Well I'm not planning to enter a bikini competition just yet... I think I'm better suited to figure!

Hello! Are you a gym goer too? Training can help massively with your progress, plus at 5'4" you might have the potential to make an awesome competitive weightlifter!
-
Are you really me in disguise? That's almost word-for-word what I would have said!

If you join the Team UK group, there is a whole conversation about this here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/876982-whey-protein-holland-and-barrett

Set both short and long term. The long term goal is the ultimate destination, but the short term goals are stepping stones on the journey. That way you have accounted for the bigger picture, but because you hit the smaller goals regularly, you see it's working and stay motivated. Your only a couple of inches shorter than…
-
So more seriously, what's you goal? I assume you have a target weight, how far to go? Also what kind of physique do you want to go with that weight, for the same weight, you can look very different? Also remember the gym is good, but you need to eat even more to account for what you have used there.
-
My strategy is to eat lots!

I don't think it's mobility either, like I said above, it's just a movement pattern issue. Even without knowing you could front squat fine, you can see a lot of ankle dorsiflexion in your video. I think it's partly to do with where you pull the bar to, partly to do with not being used to the catch, and possibly partly to…

Dunno why, I've just never known someone not like cherry flavour before, especially so violently. All kinds of other things, just never that. Saying that, I like strawberries, but I've never found a strawberry flavour protein shake that I didn't find absolutely disgusting!
-
Really? It's genuinely the best flavour protein I have tasted. Butterscotch ripple is also quite nice.
-
Interesting article, I haven't read it fully yet, I did notice it linked short term studies on protein absorption, which is what I was referring to, however it seems there are also longer term studies, which change the picture. Always interesting to find out something new. I remember a while back talking about this with…
