  • Tomorrow marks 30 days until my 30th birthday. I'm starting tomorrow morning!
  • FYI, Polar is no longer a closed universe. I have a Polar H7 and it pairs seamlessly with mapmyrun (and presumably other apps too)
  • Definitely swimming. I had a bad ankle sprain about 2 years ago and for about 3 months, I couldn't do any impact cardio. If you need a little extra stabilization in the pool, a neoprene sleeve/brace is useful. Also, if it fits your budget, I highly recommend a waterproof MP3 player -- I get bored swimming laps (despite…
  • This is what I do -- I either use a similar item from a chain that has nutritional information available and that I know has similar ingredients, or I do my best to log individual ingredients. Using a food scale and getting better at eyeballing portion sizes at home is a huge help here -- remember that portion sizes at…
  • I'm in grad school now, and I can definitely say this is easier said than done! Here is a great guide a friend sent me: http://getdrunknotfat.com/ I think this is more helpful for beer, but they've got some liquor listings too! Keep in mind: these calorie counts are based on 12 ounces, so make sure to divide by 12 for…
  • Just logged the 3 beers I had while watching the Super Bowl. 480 calories. Ouch. But my answer is: yes, I log everything, even on bad days. I'd rather go over by 500 cal and have to own up to it then keep on living like I used to -- wondering why I wasn't losing any weight when I felt like I was "sort of" eating healthy.
  • I usually do: 1/2-1c cereal (Kashi Go Lean, Special K, or similar -- look for one with extra protein to keep you full) 1 container (6oz) carbmaster yogurt (you can use greek, or whatever you like) sliced banana or handful of other sliced fruit (berries, etc.) Mix and enjoy!
  • While I congratulate you on your success, I wanted to add a note of caution for the original poster, because I believe that teaching young women (she's only 19) to desire the feeling of hunger can in some circumstances lead to dangerous results (e.g. eating disorders). This isn't to knock your success, but younger women,…
  • Extras and tasty dressings are the best way! Just make sure you are logging everything you put on your salad, because calories can add up FAST, especially dressings, dairy, and meats. For example, I'm currently eating a salad for lunch that has a small amount of spicy sausage (similar to summer sausage, was part of a gift…
  • I second Chiptole as well! The rice is sooo good but I often get the salads because you save a lot on calories swapping out the rice (though they do have brown rice now!) Also, skip the sour cream and cheese and add lots of salsa!
  • Panera can be dangerous in the calorie department, so make sure to check out their nutrition facts on their website! If you have Potbelly's near you, try their Wreck salad (pro tip: add hot peppers!) or Chicken Salad salad with their FF vinaigrette. Check the calorie counts before you go, because you may want to skip out…
  • Ann Arbor here!
  • I'm a law student at U of M -- graduating this May! I also went to Wayne State for undergrad.
  • Crushed corn flakes maybe? They typically work well for breading -- I just bought some because I have a baked onion ring recipe using corn flakes that I need to try out!
  • I also forgot to add that I have added spinach to this recipe and it worked out great! Choose berries or banana or something with a strong flavor, and it will completely overpower the taste of the spinach.
  • I have been making smoothies all week with the same basic combination of the following: 1 container of Kroger Carbmaster yogurt (made with splenda - if low carb isn't available to you, choose greek or plain to avoid added sugar) 1/2 scoop of Twinlab Vanilla whey protein about 1 cup of mixed fruit 1/4-1/3 cup of orange…
  • If it's your first "healthy" grocery trip, try to stock up on staples in larger quantities: beans brown rice oatmeal frozen veggies and fruit lean meats (chicken breast, fish -- buy value packs on sale and package into smaller bags to freeze individually if you won't use them all within a few days) SPICES (Mrs. Dash has…
  • Like others have said, Panda Express does have some healthy options! Definitely opt for veggies over rice or noodles, and take a look here at the nutrition info for their dishes: http://www.pandaexpress.com/menu/nutrition.aspx. Stick with the panda bowl and you'll reduce the portion size. String bean chicken or Broccoli…
  • Here's a good list of fruits by sugar quantity: http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whattoeat/a/whatfruit.htm If you like blueberries, try blackberries and/or raspberries instead! (Stay away from unsweetened cranberries, though. They're awful, in my opinion)
  • I second the red bell peppers w/ hummus! (yellow, orange, and green are all great too!) snap peas or snow peas zucchini jicama (cut into strips and tossed with lime juice and a little cayenne pepper for kick!)
  • I've found it's helpful for me because I have trouble with wanting to snack all the time -- specifically while I'm sitting at my desk studying, which I do a lot because I'm a law student. The shelled edamame is great -- it's a little higher in calories and fat, but is a great source of both protein and fiber. It's a little…
  • I'm happy to see several law students in this group! Law school is a unique challenge when it comes to weight loss or getting healthy because our workload and general stress level are so high. I'm a 3L and interested in intellectual property, so my courseload is pretty focused on that: Transnational Law (another term for…

  • I'm a law student at the University of Michigan. Law school has been challenging, but I absolutely love it and my choice to come to Michigan was probably the best decision I've ever made, ever. I also love Ann Arbor and will be sad to leave the city when I graduate in May.
