As a follow-up, here are the split paces as reported by my phone on my most recent half-marathon. There were two of us running together the entire way. I've used Galloway's to train for my first marathon and used it to get through the second. In neither was I running it to see how fast I could go. The course limit was 6 hours and I was basically trying to finish close to 5. Physically it felt like I was going at about 70-75% of capacity running 3 minutes and walking one.…

You are right! The first 25 makes a difference. The second 25 is likely to be just as dramatic. Keep up the good work.

It as a little weird to switch over to maintenance. Thing was, the weight kept dropping. Another 8 pounds before flattening out. When I started running (and walking less) my weigh came back up a little and stabilized to where it has been sitting for more than a year.

Assuming there is no underlying medical reason for not being able to, yes you may be able to get down to that. Realistically, 8:00/mile is probably achievable. It will take some real effort to get down into the high 6-minute/low 7-minute range. I was already down to my maintenance weight when I started running so there…

I generally run in the rain if its on my schedule. I cut a run short the other day, but I am also recovering from being off the running trail for 10 days because of the flu. I ran today in the rain (it started as I reached the halfway point in my run, but I forgot my Ziploc bag for my phone). I ran a marathon in February…

First, 5 hours for a first marathon is quite respectable. Or as John "the Penguin" Bingham suggests: "finish the same day that you start." I've run two marathons since November in the 5:10 to 5:12 range. Both of them were not at full throttle (I'd rate them both at about 65% of capacity). Tired at the end, yes. Wasted? No!…

Pay for the internet café. Log on to website just to see your day streak update and then log-off. If you are intent on entering what you ate ,do that when you get back (I wouldn't). But given my current streak (800 days tomorrow) , I wouldn't want to give it up either. If you are taking your own tablet or laptop then you…

@cyprian64 So, it sounds to me that you may be running past your current capacity and that shows up as dead legs. I would consider losing two days a week of running for several weeks and just go with 3 days per week. And on the running days, run a specific distance (say 4 miles) and see what pace that allows me to go. Its…

A couple of things. How often are you running or attempting to run? Every day, every other day? Your post suggests that you suspect you might be having difficulty recovering between runs (and you do need to do that). Does it ever occur later in the day? What kind of warmup cycle do you go through? How about in the days…

My first album: Led Zeppelin 3. The hit song was "The Immigrant Song" (it was a gift). My first album purchase: Emerson, Lake & Palmer (the one with Lucky Man) The first album purchased for my high-powered stereo system was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. You came to my room to "feel" the heartbeat and to watch the…

First, congratulations. As a marathoner, I really like 5Ks because they can give me a venue that is sufficiently long that running hard will still be a challenge for time and there are lots of really good runners to give me a challenge. And it seems like in these shorter races you can see the greatest improvement of time…

Get to a priest and ask for fast rights

In a word: yes. As long as you take in less energy than you burn your body must dip into it's onboard stores and burn that. For many, however, that becomes deprivation and people sometimes toss that overboard because if what they think they deserve (as in "I've worked so hard, I deserve....") Its all a matter of math as…

Hope you heal well and soon

Let me second Legallyblonde, you are training too hard (IMO). Granted, at age 60, I am not a speed demon, but I also have two marathons under my belt since November 2013 and am preparing for No. 3 in April. How fast can you run the single mile without puking? Take that pace, multiply that by 1.3 and that is your…

If you are little more than a troll, then you might get what you want for a while. But, when you get old enough (and you aren't right now), you might have a different view and a different way of approaching this. And I'll point out a couple of things. No definition of "efficient" and no definition of "fit" and more…

My standard is oatmeal with raspberries, blueberries and honey. I typically make mine with 1/2 cup of milk and a half cup of water. Sometimes I add vanilla yogurt. Sometimes I add honey yogurt (and not add the honey). As pointed out, unless you are using steel-cut oats which can force you into cooking a 4-cup batch, cook a…

Welcome. It is best done as a long, slow gradual process even though you'll want to and will likely see some fast and immediate benefits. You will find many people who are quite supportive and who can give you insights from their own journey. And you've taken the most courageous step of all...announcing you are here for…

I know that both Endomondo and Digifit provide the basis for their calorie calculation; Digifit's are as follows with the following formulas: Men: C/min = (-59.3954 + (-36.3781 + 0.271 x age + 0.394 x weight + 0.404 x VO2max + 0.634 x HR))/4.184 Women: C/min = (-59.3954 + (0.274 x age + 0.103 x weight + 0.380 x VO2max +…

I'll pass along John Bingham's advice/goal: "Finish the same day that you start." Don't do "junk miles" trying to improve your pace before the big race. If they aren't part of your programs, don't do them. Running on exhausted muscles rather than rested (but trained) muscles is not a recipe for fun. As for the Fun...have…

I bought one from Bed, Bath and Beyond for about $15 with. discount coupon. Mine is a The Sharper Image scale with a removable stainless steel surface that sits over a glass platform. The stainless steel is washable and helps limit contamination of the scale measurement surface. It is digital, has both English and metric…

I hit my first weight plateau about six-months in. But to be serious I didn't have much of a plan and after hitting the plateau, my weight crept back up. Once I got serious about it, I hit the second plateau about 9 months later. The second plateau was a weight plateau, not a size plateau. Even though I weighed the same or…

It takes a different mindset to set aside the black and white judgments of "good" or "bad," "right" and "wrong." We have been trained to see things in this way with associated "rewards" and "punishments." While food and certain foods can be quite enjoyable (and it probably requires a certain quality of enjoyment), seeing…

My experience was first with the Ultra and now with the Fitbit One. I like the One because it provides an accurate step count for both running and walking and is water resistant. And through minor tweaks I've gotten the walking and running stride distance set pretty accurately so that mileage corresponds with known,…

It took me a while to readjust my view of myself, even with smaller, better fitting clothes. Maybe 6 months to realize that I really am back to an average weight and a year to fully embrace it. You get accustomed to looking at yourself in a certain way AND you have trained everyone around you to be that way before you lost…

I've taken the time to log. I recognize that the count may under estimate just because it may be food that is far richer than what I might normally eat or be able to report with some certainty.

I could always go for a plain tech shirt (long or short sleeves). My current "must have gear" is a pair of Brooks windstopper gloves with a water resistant overmitten for when the weather turns snotty that tucks back into the glove. Its also designed to be usable with the touchscreen phone.

First, the ramp up long runs is the time to test your eating strategies for race day, including the couple of days just before the run. Whether you do it based upon time or distance (I use distance. Every 4-6 miles, I consume either a gel, usually GU but I've used power gel by Power Bar as well, a Power Bar, or a Clif…
