  • @Jenniens: The force is strong with this one.
  • Congratulations, Wendy. SImply awesome! Particularly the sub-3:00:00. What an accomplishment! You must have been running according to my "there is no hill" adaptation from The Matrix... "Do not try to overcome the hill, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no hill. Then you will see that it…
  • Congratulations! I was thinking of you while I sitting at home dealing with a plugged left ear from all the pollen, dust and mold we stirred up on Sunday working in the yard. At least I got to watch part of the race on TV. The elite racers were interesting to watch.
  • Always Naked!
  • Good luck to you! We know you are ready for this.
  • Let me add, that the goal is not only to finish...but to finish it the same day you started it.
  • I have run eight marathons. Some are repeats of the same course. Some are the same location for the race with an altered course. City of Oaks (Raleigh, NC), 2013, 2014. Not a flat course, but a very nice run. Same course both years. Much of the course is on Greenway paved paths (basically from Mile 10 to Mile 24). It is…
  • Ran the Rock n Roll Raleigh Marathon last weekend. It was only slightly warmer than predicted at the race start (29°F). I had predicted a 4:00:00 last year when I signed up. I figured that, in the wake of an attempt to BQ, that I'd be able to run the hillier course in 10-15 minutes slower than a BQ race. Knew that was…
  • As everyone above has stated, you've done the hardest part...the training. Now trust it. It is structured a certain way to derive the benefits during the actual 26 miles. You may not understand the why's of doing things a certain way in training (yet), but it works to get you through. Remember, about the only thing you…
  • I've seen this same effect at the beach.
  • Ran a new PR in the 5K this morning (finished before the wind really started blowing hard). Finished in 24:11, 90th overall (out of 1693) and 2nd in the M60-64 age group. Beat my previous PR by 1:21. I wasn't running at full race pace because I have a marathon tomorrow. I get an additional "remix" medal for running the 5K…
  • Running the Inaugural Rock n Roll Raleigh 5K on Saturday, April 9. Running the Rock n Roll Raleigh marathon on Sunday, April 10. First time with my Marathon Maniacs shirt.
  • @kristinegift: Thanks. Funny thing was my shoulders were sore from all that weaving. You become accustomed to running straight lines in training.
  • I am not sure anyone will be able to read this since the pictures above have made standard wrapping of text an act of futility. Ran the Cooper River Bridge Run (10K) on Saturday. I was supposed to be in Group A in the wave release (elites, sub-40, and sub-50 were the first waves released before Group A) Unfortunately, it…
  • I planned to do one. I'm running my eighth in two weeks. I've run two or back-to-back weekends (now a Marathon Maniac). Like the Lay's potato chip commercial...bet you can't run just one.
  • Since you have about six months to your marathon and training consists of shorter distances at the beginning, it would be easier to shed a few pounds before the effort really starts to build up. It is hard to lose a lot of weight and do a modicum of training without feeling hungry, tired, and generally out of sorts.
  • I just recently purchased one so I'm still sorting it out. It does sync with MFP (though I have found out that it is not as automatic as it leads you to believe. I think that might be a function of their software link, but it is easy enough to have it sync with MFP and other apps if you know what to do). I have it update…
  • From my experience, if you run a hilly race course too hard close to a marathon race, you will not recover in time. Particularly if your normal training doesn't include hills. Hills are speed training in disguise. But they also have some very distinct challenges on your muscles as outlined above.
  • Let me say that losing between 0.5-0.75 pounds per week probably won't cause you a lot of difficulty, particularly on the 0.5 end of the scale. A few hundred calories short each day can work. Sometimes you'll have some really large deficits but eat back good choices to feel satiated, not stuffed. Intentionally trying to…
  • First, your long runs are probably too fast by at least 30 seconds/mile and if all your short runs are done at race pace, then all you've really trained your body to do is burn through your glycogen stores. My own experience with hunger is similar to yours on the long runs. Most long runs of 17 miles or less, I'll run…
  • From the little bit of information, it is hard to render an informed decision. Hopefully, there is no underlying medical condition. Most of us have one of those running days where everything seems to go wrong and you feel awful. Two lessons learned from this: When you have a day like this, cut it short. Second, if the…
  • Let me add a note about hills. This is not the standard hill training that others see in various training plans (they are usually classified as "hill repeats" where you find some moderate hill, run up it approximately 200m at relatively high intensity, and then walk or jog back down to where you started and you do it…
  • :) I forgot about that part after my first. I nearly had to call my wife on the cell phone to come out to the driveway and help me out of the car.
  • Interesting. It says (on my privacy setting) my profile is open to MFP members only. And on the food diary is says "public." I've saved them again in case there is something that defaulted during recent upgrades. I copied the link to my diary http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/STrooper Logged out and then pasted the…
  • My typical pre-race meal is about two hours before warm-up (approximately 2.5 hours before race start). It typically consists of an English muffin and honey along with a cup of coffee, sugar and half and half. I may also skip the coffee and just go with plain water. I have also used a nonfat yogurt (honey and yogurt or…
  • Well, mine is open if you wish to take a look. I have been weighing myself daily, same time, same general conditions every day since the beginning of the year. I started at 180.4 pounds. Today I am at 172.2 pounds. Yes, there can be a lot of daily variation (yesterday my weight was 171.6 pounds) , but the general trend is…
  • No, I was watching the Olympic time trials the day before and knew how hot the weather was for both runs on Saturday and Sunday. Like the joke goes about the two people trying to outrun a bear..."I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you!" The soreness will go away. Some people are satisfied having done…
  • My first marathon came at age 60. I had "accidentally" gotten back into running after signing up for the Cooper River Bridge Run in April 2013 (my first 10K since 1985, when I ran a July 4th 10K). I really just wanted to get pictures up on the bridge, but I ended up running most of the course except when I was taking…
  • A quick update. On Monday, after I posted the comment above, I reached to twist a wand for a set of blinds in the bedroom. As I reached across and was twisting the blinds open, I had a lower back spasm that made it very difficult to walk the remainder of Monday and most of Tuesday. It is Thursday and its just beginning to…
  • It was a very warm race, indeed. Congratulations. Remember, you've done something that most people won't or can't do because it is "too hard." A friend of mine did the one in Anchorage a number of years ago. She didn't respect the training required and she suffered through it. But she still completed it and they gave…
