I second the library. I'm looking for a good yoga for runners dvd to do at night after the kids are in bed, so I checked out a dozen of them (requesting some of them from interlibrary loan), to try them out and see what I like before I spend the money to buy it. FWIW - don't be afraid to go to a class. I'm always happy to…

I definitely think a new pair of shoes is going to do the trick for you. I sometimes get a weird pain every once in awhile when I run and as long as it's not there next time, I don't worry about it. Make sure you aren't lacing your shoes too tight, too. If something hurts after a run, it's never a bad idea to ice it for…

I eat back nearly all my calories burned from exercise and have lost every single week. I use a HRM and not the machines at the gym or the generic calculator on mfp, so I know my calories burned is as accurate as I can get it. I've read that the more calories you can eat while losing, the more you'll be able to eat while…

I think it depends on what your goals are. Do you just want to keep your longest run at 3 miles? If so, I don't see anything wrong with your schedule. I run 5 days a week, 25-30 miles per week total, and I also do some yoga for runners, pilates, and *need* to start doing some strength training. I'm guilty of not doing…

For those wondering WHY she could be in there...my husband and I go to the gym a lot, and our kids go to the kids gym. However, there is both an indoor and an outdoor pool and we take the kids swimming now and then, so after our workouts, we pick-up the kids from the kids gym, and go to the locker rooms to change into, and…

You missed where he said there are multiple FAMILY locker rooms to use...where you can your other gender kid. No one is proposing sending an unsupervised 4 year old into the women's locker room.

People use compression socks to recover faster from a long run either by wearing them during their run, or wearing them after. If you're having actual pain in your calf during the run, that's nothing compression socks will solve. Have you been fitted for running shoes from a local running specialty store (not a big…

The rule of thumb for runners is neck up, still run. If it's below the neck, don't run. I think that same rule of thumb could apply to all workouts? I ran through a virus a month ago and was just fine. I just made sure to get extra sleep.

Our gym allows it until age 2, then you have to use the family locker rooms (or only the same sex child in the locker room with you). 2 seems about right to me for that. Does your gym have family locker rooms he can use?

I love it too, but have a hard time convincing my warm self to get out the door in the winter! I still manage my long runs outside, but during the week, I generally choose 5:30am dark outside treadmill runs instead:) The coldest I've run so far has been 4 degrees, and the first mile was chilly, but the next 7 were amazing!…

If they're part of your route, I'd run them (slow your pace on the up until they get easier, walk if you have to). If they're not, I wouldn't seek them out until you're comfortable running.
-
How far can you run right now? You can sign up for one and run/walk it. Otherwise, if you're coming from a base of not running at all, I'd plan to do the 9 week Couch to 5k program and sign up for a 5k that is for the 9th or 10th week of the program.

It could be she was burning the extra 400 a day and NOT eating those back, thus eating a net 800 and that WOULD be too low to see losses.

I know when I run for 60 minutes, it's roughly 600 calories burned (by my HRM). When I do yoga for 60 mins, while it feels good and can be strength training, it is just not going to burn near that many calories. I always use MFP for that and assume the 170ish calories they give me is about right (if not overestimated a…

This is what I'm already registered for, I'm sure I'll end up running some additional shorter runs during the year (5k's, 10k's) and maybe another fall half marathon or two. January - one 5k February - one 4 mile race March - one 5k (possibly a 44 mile relay too) April - two half marathons, one 4 mile race May - one half…

skip the muffin, no real nutrients there nor is it going to fill you up. Eat the banana before your workout and eat something else after (oatmeal, greek yogurt, etc)

Sometimes. More often I see people leave early. I don't worry about it, I got my own work out in! I just assume they only wanted to attend part of class, or had other life obligations making them late or leave early, no biggie.

13.1. I've run four half marathons in the last few years and am signed up for four more this spring. I'm doing a more advanced training plan this winter/spring and will hit a 15 mile training run in a few months. Then at the end of May I'll start training for my first marathon, so there will be many runs beyond 15:)

I usually eat half a banana or a graham cracker (or about 10 of my kids little graham cracker snacks). I've also hear applesauce is good pre-workout.

1. Couch to 5k program. Repeat a week if you struggled. 2. Before you start c25k, go to a local running store (not a big box sporting goods store but a specialty running store) and get fitted for shoes. If you don't, you risk injury. 3. Running is addicting, enjoy!

ditto what the previous poster said. Running isn't causing you to gain weight, it's likely an increase in calories from all the cardio causing you to be more hungry and consuming more calories. Are you logging calories for all your gels, sports drinks, recovery drinks, etc? As far as decreasing your base mileage while…

Have fun! Enjoy the excitement of race day! My husband and I signed up for our first 5k on a whim over 2 years ago and have never looked back...now we've run half a dozen half marathons, have four more this spring, and are tackling our first marathon at Chicago in October! Warning: running is an addiction!! Nothing beats…

I had a Polar for years and loved it! Once I became a distance runner, I switched to a Garmin (not only track heartrate, which I use for training, but also calories, distance, elevation, etc), but I just turn off the GPS when using it indoors. I know it's a rough estimate, but it's has to be more accurate than trying to…

The most important thing a runner needs is good shoes fitted just for them. Here's my advice. 1. go to a running store (not the big chain sporting good stores but a specialty running store), and have them evaluate you and figure out which shoes you need. 2. tell them your budget, sometimes they'll have prior years models…

What I would do? Run it on my treadmill in my basement or at my gym. If I didn't have those, I'd run outside as long as it wasn't icy, I mean, it's only what, 30 mins? I ran 8 miles last Sunday in 4 degrees and 15 mph winds. If you don't feel it's safe, cross training and doing some elliptical today sounds like a good bet.…

I listened to a Jillian Micheal's podcast a few weeks ago where she didn't have a lot of nice things to say about Crossfit. She said there is no licensing requirements for the "box" owners and some out there are doing downright dangerous things and people are getting hurt. She said there's no reason to lift such extreme…

I'm pear shape and no matter the weight, I'm still pear shape. And yes, it seems like I lose boobs before anything!;) The quickest way for me to see a change on the bottom is my running. I took a break for a few months, and hello saddle bags. I've been back at 25 miles per week for 5.5 weeks and can visibly see a…

I've always been told to take deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth to settle the heart rate down. Holding your breath is really weird.

Could it be hormonal? I get "pudgy" during that nice PMS time!;)

My mom had a hysterectomy when she was around your age (and also a runner). The recovery was no joke, but she felt so much better after (like, months later). I wouldn't worry about the running, just get yourself healthy first. And honestly, as far as the marathon goes, I'm not sure if your base is strong enough to tackle…
