This is the most concise way I have seen this put. It always takes me forever to try to explain this concept to people; the idea that you could eat something you like to lose weight rather than spending a fortune on diet quasi-foods seems completely baffling to a lot of people (which I understand first-hand).

*raises hand* I do! For some reason, using a pencil is a huge issue with my OCD.

This thread was a joke and we still managed to get the "screw prisoners and test on them" crap.

Isn't there a difference between opening a door and holding a door? Holding a door that you're already going through is just common courtesy, regardless of sex. I mean, your hand is already on it, just keep it there for a second. But I find that it's much rarer for someone to open the door for someone else, and it is…

It definitely had that effect for me. I could never walk in heels before; I could barely balance and it was really uncomfortable. As a result, I never wore them (though I owned one pair). Then, a few weeks ago, I had to start wearing them for work and suddenly, it was incredibly easy and not at all uncomfortable, even…

The only thing I disagree with is that the newscaster is somehow responsible for "sending a message" with her body in the first place. We are not responsible for what other people think of us. We do not have any duty to look healthy for other people unless we choose to do that. I'd say that a fitness or diet expert is in a…

It never worked for me either, but try valerian root. Be forewarned that it smells like evil incarnate, but has definitely helped put me to sleep when melatonin never has.

I'm not able to watch the video since I'm at school, but as to the main question, I'd say it is almost always a choice though often not an entirely conscious one. Those rare medical circumstances excepted, obesity is generally the result of voluntary behaviors. Even if you feel out of control, the reality is that food does…

I actually lost it from my back first. When I hit my highest weight, the thing that made me feel the fattest was that I could feel my back touching itself where a roll had developed right above my hips. It went away first and was very noticeable in a positive way; it definitely served as a motivator and mood booster…

I have quite a bit of experience with this (unfortunately). Several years ago, I was suffering a lot of joint and bone pain. I thought that my juvenile rheumatoid arthritis had come out of remission and visited my rheumatologist. She seemed skeptical that a textbook case of juvenile RA would crop up again and become…

Sure, happy to oblige. Weight Watchers requires a maintenance phase before granting lifetime membership status. http://www.weightwatchers.com/help/index.aspx?pageid=1028501 Atkins' Phase 4 is "Lifetime Maintenance," so it's open-ended but still considered to be a part of the Atkins program and still has rules.…

I've also seen doctors recommend energy healing and homeopathy, but that doesn't make them right. Sticking an MD at the end of someone's name doesn't make them infallible. And you've really never heard of a program with a maintenance phase? Off the top of my head, Weight Watchers, Atkins, and South Beach all incorporate…

The criticism isn't generally that these things don't work (though many products do fit that description) but rather that they're undesirable for some other reason, like being unhealthy, unnecessary, or expensive. You don't have to do something first hand to evaluate it or determine the benefits/detriments.

Of course you count it; that's 400 calories you're consuming whether you like it or not. If you're too hungry because of it, cutting down on the alcohol seems the obvious solution. It seems a little shortsighted to forgo actual nutrition for a drink (though I understand the appeal).

I know I'm late to the thread, but just wanted to throw out a response to the many people saying that there's no reason to refute this list (and others like it), that the list is merely helpful and criticizing or questioning it is unnecessary and mean-spirited. The problem with lists like these is twofold. First, they…

I have ADHD as well, so I'm speaking from experience when I say that diet can't necessarily control everything. ADHD can be a crippling problem and while I understand that many parents don't want to medicate, medication is not necessarily a bad thing. Medication that helps is something to be sought out rather than avoided.…

It's not indicative of any particular disorder to self-diagnose, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. You can feel better without gluten without having an allergy, so the elimination diet could indeed work; however, diagnosing yourself rather than using a medical test isn't wise. If the diet works for you and makes you…

I'm not sure what the original post was before editing, so I'm kind of reacting to gwenr for the context. I saw that sort of behavior when I was a kid with my best friend's dad. The whole family was healthy, no issues with health or weight, but my friend's dad was very weird about food restriction. He would not allow fat…

To quote my mom (when I was a kid and saying I didn't want her "gross" dinner): "I don't eat things that taste bad." In other words, if pleasure isn't involved, I'm not eating whatever it is. Everything I eat is enjoyable. It's when I was hurting and punishing myself with food--pizza, chips, soda, candy, things that people…

I'm not clear on what exactly is concerning you about it. There's nothing wrong about eating a 1000 calorie meal in and of itself. If you're worried about being able to eat it, then try filling out those meals with high-calorie ingredients, or try having a snack earlier in the day (I find that it's pretty easy to fit in…

You don't need to avoid particular fruits, especially if your alternative is fast food (there's no fruit high enough in sugar to make it less healthy than a McDonalds cheeseburger). For snacks during the day, I like fruits that are easy to grab without having to worry about the serving size. For example, clementines,…

It's completely normal. Most people see a large and immediate drop in weight at the beginning due to the loss of water weight. Fat loss occurs at a much slower rate. Additionally, the introduction of exercise causes the muscles to retain water in order to heal and protect themselves from the new strain, which can make…

I weigh "unofficially" every morning but only log it on Saturdays. As long as you don't put a lot of meaning into the numbers, it's not going to do any harm. I prefer having that information every day; it helps me understand how different foods or activities impact my weight and helps me to see little problems before they…

I have a set of Bodylastics bands and would recommend that brand. The bands come marked with the different weight/resistance and clip onto handles, ankle straps, and door anchors, so you can combine weights and the accessories for a wide variety of exercises and increase resistance as you progress. They also have a great…

I log it in a separate program, just make a table with the exercises and dates. I use OneNote but any spreadsheet or word processor would work just as well (as would paper and pen, if you want to go that route instead, haha).

While some of the comments in this thread are pretty cringe-worthy (including the title example), I think people often find offense where there isn't any. If someone says, "You have a pretty face," the only one making that negative is you. That person didn't have to compliment you at all, but they went out of their way to…

LOVE Worst Cooks in America (one of those shows where my jaw is on the floor the whole time) and Next Food Network Star (I like seeing all the behind-the-scenes pressures these hosts have to deal with that you don't even think of when watching them). HATE anything with Bobby Flay. Ever since he went on Iron Chef and…

Have you contacted your insurance provider? If you call, they should be able to provide you with a list of in-network dieticians, doctors, or whatever else you might be looking for. I know if you have Aetna, you can look it up on their site, but not sure how other carriers operate.

I find that these threads, while making good points, tend to oversimplify this issue. For a lot of people, yes, it can be the same or even cheaper to buy fresh food and make it at home. But if you're living at or under the poverty line (or even a little above depending on the region), that stops being true at a point.…
