  • For me, 2 is true: I danced with Natalie Portman at Burningman (although this was 7 years ago and I didn't even realize it it was her until a friend came up to me and said, Dude, you're dancing with Natalie Portman. At that time I'd only seen her in the movie she made when she was a kid with that french assassin).
  • Elliptical, 1 is true.
  • 1. I married my high school sweetheart. 2. I danced with Natalie Portman at Burningman. 3. I've been divorced twice. Elliptical, 1 is the truth.
  • If not for Davy Jones, there would be no David Bowie. Well, umm, at least the name part. And indisputably, one of the greatest tambourine players of all time (although Linda McCartney would give him a run for his money).
  • 5 pounds is fantastic. That's losing weight at a very healthy rate. Like they said above, that's 60 pounds in a year. Who wouldn't be thrilled with that! Plus, I wouldn't worry too much about that 4 pounds gained. For me the scale can be a yo-yo despite fairly consistent performances with diet and exercise. You could…
  • Men's Health (not always the best source of accurate scientific reporting imho) recently published a blurb about a study that found that chocolate milk following 45 minutes of cycling improved aerobic capacity over a six week period. Something about the ratio of carbs to protein. LIke all things in that particular…
  • If you're serious or committed about riding, build a relationship with a bike shop. Superior equipment and knowledge. The first question they will ask is what, where and how you will be riding.

  • I absolutely agree with Fitnesssocial, long rests between heavy sets are essential so that the next set gets everything you have.
  • Oh, and one other thing, after a bit you will want to incorporate more rest days.
  • Good compound movements like bench press, squats and deadlifts are a great place to start. Once this becomes comfortable you can add more, but I think that too many people start with too many exercises and burn out too quickly.
  • I will occasionally add a can of pumpkin puree to my chili. Doesn't overpower the chili but it adds a rich, velvety texture.
  • What Marks said. It drives me crazy to watch these half reps that are now apparently all the rage. (pulling my hair out)
  • Just hit 1000 miles for the year. Of course nearly all of these have beeen on my rollers. What are these strong head winds you speak of?
  • We'll find out tomorrow night during the shootouts how she'll manage the super speedway. Go Tony!

  • Gentlemen, I am in your debt. Looks like I can sleep in a little longer because I won't have to eat twice before going to work to get my 60 grams of protein for the moring. Woo hoo!
  • I have a question about meal frequency and because I don't want misinformation, I thought I would post it in this thread. I haven't lifted competitively in ten years, but years ago the prevailing thought about meal frequency seemed to focus on the body's ability to synthesize protein--around 30 grams every two hours or so.…
  • Rest days are essential. Lifting weights basically causes micro tears in the muscle. Resting allows these tears to heal and strengthen. Your rest days are when progress is actually made. Kind of counter-intuitive.
  • I'm at 985 since Jan.1st. Should hit the kilo today! Woo Hoo! Unfortunately, nearly all of it has been on rollers. Our first group ride scheduled for President's day was snowed out. 4500 for the year should be manageable barring injury (although the last two years running I've managed to bear hug a tree on the downhill…
  • I rode a century last summer with a buddy who had a computer that measured wattage output via a foot pad, and I think he was getting about 65 calories a mile. He was about 6'1 and 185 lbs and 33 years old.
  • Yeah, I got mine about 20 years ago and I couldn't believe how hard they were at first ( I could only go 18 mph for a few minutes tops back then). But I've probably put 30k miles on them since and I have a heart rate monitor. That's the paradox: at 44 years old 30 mph at 150 heart rate (which is admittedly elevated due to…
  • The issue of heart rate is fascinating. Different web sites invariably allow for different methods of calculating calories burned either by heart rate or by time and distance based on activity (i.e. cycling). Either approach gives a vastly different answer. For example, a heart rate based approach gives my caloric…
  • With stationary trainers the rear wheel is locked into a resistance assembly which holds the bicycle upright and the front wheel is motionless. With rollers, the bicycle is place on rotating drums connected by a band and the rider balances by pedaling. Little bit of a learning curve at first.
