  • I currently have about 5 pairs of running shoes going....my favorites for overall running are my Hoka's but I would rather race in my Karhu's or my Mizuno's. I agree with everyone else though that going to a good running store and getting properly fitted wil work best for you. I have had bleeding toe nails but never lost…
  • I am enjoying my Petzl headlamp. Very light weight, different levels of illumination, white or red light. Have to say when I get in from my runs I have to be careful not to thow it on the floor when I take my hat off as I forget that I am wearing it.
  • I love my Cutco knives - expensive but worth every penny, lifetime guarantee and sharpening if they ever need it. Bought them as I needed over a number of years. My go to pot is a "wok-pot" - this is a wok with a flat pot bottom that sits right n my elective range and has a handle and lid just like a regular stove top…
  • Ditto litsy3. Rest for me is a non running day. On rest days I may lift weights, walk, or do other things that are non-running calorie burners. Every so often I take a full rest day and do no planned exercise (I don't count walking as planned exercise so I always walk and shoot for 10,000 steps a day).

  • Just sent a request to join the group. Was diagnosed with "battle field fatigue" yesterday on my first visit with a counselor (this is not from military service).
  • My wife and I both wear Fitbit Flex ane are fairly happy with them. I debated the Jawbone but liked the Fitbit better. Now that I am using a Garmin watch for my running I will most likely switch over to the Garmin activity tracker when my Fitbit dies. I have heard that the Garmin product is really quite nice considering…
  • As long as you are logging the beer and keeping your calories at a deficit you will continue to lose weight. From my experience some of the last fat to leave is the stubborn belly fat but given enough time, exercise, and deficit eating it too will go. "Beer is proof that God loves us." - Thomas Jefferson
  • Welcome! Enjoy your 1/2 marathon training, it should be fun! I grew up just down the road from you in East Aurora - small world! Feel free to send me a friend request if you would like an older, slower, runner friend... :)

  • Just one other point to consider - treadmills are notoriously wrong on their accuracy for both speed and distance so if you had it set at 6.5 you may in fact have been running much faster than this. At least you would have been if you were on the one at my gym that is the "favorite" machine. I'm still trying to get past…
  • Having been diagnosed with clinical depression myself several years back I would definately say that running helped me as part of an overall mental health plan that was monitored closely by my GP. Along with running we used low dose medications that did not cause me any major side effects (although we needed to play with…
  • Ditto on the "best cross-training exercise is the one you enjoy"! I lift following a modified "SL 5x5" program on my non running days (although I tend to put in a couple of miles on the TM after finishing the SL program too). When I just want a different cardio experience I use the following (in order of preference): Arc…
  • I had the same issues until I started wearing a Garmin that I can look at regularly. The Nike+ running app will give you your pace every 1/4 mile and this can help a bit. I fully agree with the slowing down as moving through time and space is quite a bit different than moving just through time on a TM. For the other part…
  • To stay injury free for the entire year (as opposed to 2014) and get back to logging 100 miles a month. Not big on racing but would like to run our local "Bridge Run 1/2" in the early spring.
  • I am 4+ months wearing my fitbit now and must say that I plan on upgrading to the newer model with the HRM once it comes out. It is a motivator for me to be more active and move more each day. When I started wearing it I only averaged about 7000 steps a day - 4 months later and I am now averaging 12 - 13,000 steps each…
  • You can do this if you truely want to! I know as I was a long time smoker (36+ years). Every time you try is one time closer to giving them up for good. January 10th will be my 4th year anniversary of quiting. I have to tell you that it was hard but every day that went by it got a bit easier. Now I really wonder why I…
  • Burning 1500 extra calories per week, whether over 5 days, 3 days, or 1 day is still only burning 1500 calories. No difference in the outcome if all else remains the same.
  • I use my fitbit as a stand alone tool and do not link it to MFP. I log my exercise on MFP and use the fitbit for traking of daily steps and a few other items.
  • I use a fitbit flex but do not link it to MFP nor do I add the steps in as part of my daily exercise (unless of course I am running or walking as a form of exercise). I am more interested in seeing how active I am. The longer I have used the tracker the more I find myself trying to surpass my daily step goals. My belief is…
  • Hi - I've been on MFP for a number of years now. Lost 91 lbs, put 34 back on and am getting rid of those pounds again. I like to leave my pounds behind me on the road when I run. I run or strength train almost everyday of the week and am feeling fitter and stronger than just about any other time in the last 57 years. Feel…
  • Welcome fellow runner! A 19 minute 5k would be quite the accomplishment it you ask me! I am 13 years older and enjoying my adult running career immensely! Feel free to friend me if you would like to stay in contact - I log every day (almost anyway) and run a lot as it is my go to exercise. - Stay healthy; run strong! - Doug

  • I use a fitbit but don't sync it to MFP. I use my iPhone and Nike+ running to track my running mileage, pace, etc. I use MFP for exercise and food tracking. I really enjoy the fitbit flex but am definately thinking about upgrading to the Charge HR when it become available. Either that or I am thinking about getting a…
  • Name, City and State, Daughters name and Phone #, Wife's name and phone #, Medical info. The medical info is only about HBP but thought it pertinent if I am found lying on the side of the road. Two contacts guarantees someone will be reached.

  • I run year round in upstate NY. I get out of my running gear as soon as I walk back into the house, dry off with a "sweat towel", cool down for about 15 minutes while I rehydrate and then it is straight into the hot tub for some post running stretches. I second the shower idea and then getting into dry layers.
  • I used C25K and rather than skipping days I just did multiple days in the same outing (sometimes the whole week). When I got into the later weeks I found 2 days was enough and then I would add my favorite day which was run 10, walk 3, run 10 to finish. That was over two years ago and I am still runing 4 - 5 days a week.…
  • Ditto. The only way to lose weight is to consume less calories than you expend each day. Exercise is for fitness. There is no magical exercise unless you count that as the one you like to do so you keep doing it on a regular basis (for me that is running). HIIT does burn more calories in the same amount of time than steady…
  • When I started at the gym I was primarily using nothing but the machines. They are mostly self explanitory but if you don't understand the mechanics of any particular machine just about anyone else lifting there will be happy to explain. I set up my own routine moving from one piece of equipment to the next doing one set…
  • I am also an advocate for SL 5X5 and reading a good book on weight training - there are a lot to choose from at any decent sized book store.
  • I would agree with TJP on this issue. I regularly exercise on an empty stomach at 4:30 a.m. and do not run into this problem. Today was HIIT on the treadmill for 6.1 miles (increase by 1.6 mph at every 1/4 mile mark for 1 minute then back to regular easy/steady state pace). Tomorrow will be SL 5X5 for an hour or so and…
  • Mine has never alerted me but I do get a battery icon when I am on my iphone app that shows the remaining charge. I plug it in periodically for short periods during the week (about every 2 - 3 days) and then go for a full 5 light charge on the weekends. So far so good.
  • I run in the very early hours (pre dawn) with my German Shepherd and with music (no head phones - just an Iphone on my arm that is also running Nike+ which gives me my pace and distance periodically). Can't say that I enjoy racing but will do charity races now and again. Love running with my brother once or twice a year…
