While I agree that the MFP protein levels are too low, it can be unhealthy to take in too much protein. 1 gram per pound is definitely pushing the limit on protein from what I've researched. You need to be doing a lot of heavy lifting with that kind of intake. From what I've read, if you have a family history of kidney…

It depends on what your goals are. If all you are concerned about is being thin and don't care how you look (thin vs. fit), you can lose all the weight you need with a very strict diet. No exercise at all. If you are lifting weights aggressively and pushing yourself, you really are doing "cardio" to some degree although…

I've probably logged 150 out of the past 160 days. It's tough to do sometimes but I like the accountability. The one thing that has surprised me is that it takes me a week to lose a pound when I am disciplined but I can gain two pounds in a day if I eat poorly. My life has conspired against me this week and I've eaten…

Make sure that you aren't simply starving yourself to lose weight. Make sure that you have some lifting along with the cardio. And give yourself some time off from lifting to recover. I'd been stuck at about 22 lbs lost for three weeks where I would bounce between 20 and 22 lbs lost even though I was right at my calorie…

Personally, I only walk on a treadmill when I am doing intervals and cooling off between runs. Other than that, I run. If I'm going to walk, it's around the block with our dog. I agree with those that say that you should use an incline if you are going to walk for an extended period. For the comment above to not use a…

We have a rat terrier mix that I've tried to run with a couple times. She tends to pull too much for the first 1/2 mile which makes the running a little annoying. After she wears down after playing sled dog for 5 minutes, she starts to run at a reasonable pace.

For the most part, I'd agree with the people that said it should be less about "sacrifice" and more about moderation. However, most of them are also probably ignoring at least one seismic shift that they had to make to stay in compliance on calories and get 500 calories per day under. For me, it's been eliminating soda…

Well, you've done it before so you know you can do it. The most important thing this time around is to avoid any gimmicks or tricks that you might have done before and concentrate on fundamental changes to your lifestyle that you can sustain. Changing to a lifestyle that you can live with is incredibly important. BTW, you…

When I started on MFP, I weighed 177 lbs and thought that I wanted to be 160 lbs. I figured that anything less than that and I would be too skinny. I got down to 160 lbs and realized that I was still heavier than I wanted to be so I have revised my goal to 150 lbs. I've been working on my protein intake to try to build…

That's the one issue with this site and any other diet. It is so important that people make changes that are sustainable for them personally. I worry about what will happen with me when I get rid of my last 5-6 lbs. You never know how your body will react when you try to go into maintenance mode but you hope that you've…

While I agree that it was poor form to ruin a positive thread to ***** about her diary, it is terribly unhealthy for a large person to be eating that tiny amount of food. In some ways, a bad choice can be a good thing for everyone overall. The scale may be moving quickly but the potential damage to her body and metabolism…

If all you are trying to lose is 25 lbs, 4 lbs per week is way too fast. 1200 calories for a guy is way, way too low and you definitely need to be over 1500 calories per day if you are losing that fast. This is just my opinion, but I agree with the other comment that 2 lbs per week is healthy, more than that and you need…

I agree that you can't lose 20 lbs of fat and gain 20 lbs of muscle in 3 months. I do think I've lost 15 lbs of fat and gained 5 lbs of muscle. That's just my guess though.

I think it's difficult to gain muscle while on a calorie deficit but it can happen. I've definitely gained muscle in the past three months while I've lost 10 lbs since I've incorporated a lifting routine. It is important to get an adequate amount of protein while you are doing it though and I have no doubt that I would…

I've lost 22 pounds eating the same foods that I've always eaten but in smarter portions. I have made some changes because they had to be made like eliminating soda from my diet, buying low fat or reduced fat items when they are available and eating less fast food. I still have an occasional cookie but they are so…

First, I have found that my co-workers have gotten very critical about anything that I say about losing weight ever since it got to the point where I was making real progress. Two of them were on MFP and both quit when I had dropped 10 lbs and they had dropped maybe half that. Jealousy is an ugly thing and they really hate…

Switch up your routine. Add more weight training if you aren't doing a lot. Add more cardio if you are lifting more than cardio. Make sure you are eating the right amount of food. Make sure you are giving yourself some recovery days. Sleep 8 hours when you can. Take a week off from trying to lose weight and eat the extra…

Seconded! Weight training is absolutely imperative if you want to shed fat (JMHO of course). As for the belly fat, even though I've lost 5 inches off my waist since February, it's definitely the last stand location for most of my fat. As others have said, you have to reduce your overall bodyfat % in the long run.

Just a thought, someone asked a question and people gave their thoughts. Maybe you should just stay away from these types of threads if you don't like them?

Diet sodas have been proven to be healthy for the general public for a variety of different reasons, some of which having already been mentioned. One of the biggest problems with diet sodas are that they allow people to continue other bad habits because they are drinking diet soda. A good example of this is the guy (or…

A couple people have said this in one way or another but I'll throw my thoughts out here. First, your husband was in the wrong for even making this an issue. Any of the guys here who say otherwise are idiots that are never going to survive being married. Self centered DB's who think that their wife wanting space their…

I use the MFP site numbers for my running (which are nearly identical to what the treadmill indicates) and I have been almost dead on with losing one pound per week on average. When I lift, my heart rate monitor says that I burn about 8 calories per minute on average. MFP says that I am only burning half that. A lot of…

There are people of all shapes and sizes at the YMCA that I go to. It can be a bit intimidating to be amongst people that are in much better shape than you without a doubt. One thing that I have found personally satisfying is that after really working on the strength training for just three months (I did primarily cardio…

Taking a quick look at your diary, you are a textbook case of someone who could be undereating. Quite a few days where your input is under or around 1200 calories. Personally, I found that I wasn't doing as well when I wasn't eating as much as I should and exercising less than I had been even though my net was lower. For…

As others have said.....make sure to do a comparison of how far you've come. One thing that I have found interesting (pathetic?) about myself in the past few weeks is that my self-image is actually worse right now than it has ever been. When I was bouncing around 175 lbs, I felt pretty good about myself even though I knew…

That's been the downside for me as well in some situations. The honest truth is that I felt like hell after eating all that theater popcorn.

It is obviously a dangerous game to play when you have unhealthy foods in your diet. Some people do not possess the ability to restrain themselves from eating way too much and incorporating those kinds of foods is the fastest path back to the obese zone. My viewpoint on weight loss is that it is most important to follow a…

I will say that in general, I've tried to reduce my fast food intake and eat better. The common person doesn't need to obsess about perfection and that was the primary point of my post. If someone thinks that they can eat that kind of stuff all the time and stay ahead.....they'll be disappointed. A few bad days hasn't hurt…

You are in the spot that I was in for about 10 years. I'd bounce from 172 to 180 and back but didn't feel inspired to lose weight more than that. I always intended to go lower but by the time I'd get down to 172, it was getting cold outside and Thanksgiving and Christmas would roll around which meant foooooood! Before I…
