I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery almost 3 years ago to remove a bone spur and repair a frayed rotator cuff. I had horrible bicep pain any time I moved my arm wrong. It was torture to get dressed or put on a jacket. I went to an orthopedic surgeon who recommended physical therapy, which didn't help. I also had a…

Welcome from a neighbor to the north :) It's a great community here. Here's to a successful journey! :flowerforyou:

When you pull out your phone to scan the barcode on the Black Velvet apricots you just sampled at Sam's Club, and then tell the sample lady all about MFP

One more vote for Couch to 5K. It's awesome. This is from a woman who NEVER thought she'd like running.

This is what I do, too. I add some chopped basil and use oil & vinegar dressing instead of italian.

I created my own exercise for each week - C25K W1, etc - and log the time and number of calories shown on my HRM. If you don't have a HRM, you can use mapmyrun.com to figure your mileage and average speed and then log it as walking or jogging at that rate. Probably won't be exact, but it should be in the ballpark.

I quilt, or at least make an attempt at it. My husband says he doesn't know what a finished quilt looks like. It keeps me busy and sometimes I forget to eat! It can be expensive if you do big quilts, but smaller projects aren't quite as pricey, and they're easier to complete, too.

Congratulations! My daughter is getting married on the same day :) You will find a great group of people and loads of support here.

Great analogy!

I think MFP tends to run high, although I do believe it does take your weight into account. My elliptical gives me about 6 calories per minute, MPF gives me almost 10, and my HRM averages 8. I go with my HRM.
-
I just finished Week 2 and am averaging around 250 calories for 30 minutes. I wish it was more, but my HRM is already showing an average of 88%, so I'm not sure pushing any harder is a good idea. Can anyone tell me what percent I should be looking for? I'm 50, 5'3", and 140 lbs.

I've never been a runner, but I just started Week 2 on Wednesday, when the weather was cold and dreary. I can tell I’m enjoying it. Six months ago, if you had said, “It’s 54 degrees and looks like it could rain at any moment. Want to go for a run?”, I’d have looked at you like, “What sort of idiot do you think I am???”…

You might try "Moving household items, carrying boxes". There's also "Gardening, general". Gardening usually requires some bending and squatting.
-
It's listed as "belly dancing." I've found that if you have one word that's different (dance vs dancing) you may not find it.
-
I wouldn't really classify myself as a belly dancer, but I did take a 4 week class through our local community college. It was lots of fun - got WAY outside my box! Definitely a workout, and something I hope to do again sometime!

I raised mine to 1300 a week ago. I've been at a plateau for 3 months. I also started doing 30 Day Shred, and actually gained a pound this week. But I'm hoping my body will adjust and it will start coming off soon. If not, then I'll re-evaluate.

"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. It's set in the early '60's in the south, and deals with relationships between black maids and their white employers. It's very well written and both funny and sad.

Great job! You can see the happiness in your expression :)

I was going to say the same thing. Kinda like celery - you burn more calories than you consume...

I agree - sizes vary by manufacturer and even by style for the same designer. I have been looking for a dress for my daughter's wedding, and have found dresses that fit in every size from an 8 to a 14. I know that in most styles I'm not a 14 - that's what I wore 23 pounds ago - but as much as I want to be an 8, I'm really…

As a college freshman at a big university, I was dating a co-worker at the dorm food service. I hung out on his dorm floor a lot, and met several of the guys from his floor. Since they all had to eat, I got to see them quite often when they came through the line at work. There was one in particular that I always thought…

A regular Oreo has 53 calories, and a Doublestuff has 70. That means the Doublestuff has 17 calories more than the Original Oreo. And if it really is double, then those 17 calories would be in the extra cream. So, if you double the amount of calories in the extra cream, that means the cream counts for 34 calories, and…

When I do 30 minutes on the elliptical, MFP wants to give me 300 calories. The generic monitor on the elliptical gives me around 180, and my HRM is usually around 240. I go with the HRM, since it's programmed for my height, weight, age, and gender. The one on the equipment is only guessing at what I'm burning, since…

Christmas 2009 - the great blizzard! We were to travel 90 miles east to my mom's for Christmas Eve, and my daughter's boyfriend (now fiance) was to meet us there. Roads were nearly impassable, so we canceled the plans and stayed home. But young love had other ideas. The boyfriend hopped on the Amtrack train and arrived in…

Yay for you!!!

I don't have any advice for you, but want to share a story that goes along with taking care of yourself. My 20 year old daughter is engaged to a great guy. My biggest concern is that he comes from a "large" family - and I'm not talking about the number of siblings and cousins. Her fiance's dad is a wonderful cook, and it…

I totally get being excited about doing the whole workout without stopping  When I started doing the elliptical, I couldn't do more than 7 or 8 minutes at a time. Now, 35 minutes goes pretty quickly! Congrats on your sucess!

Done :)

I have a note in my office that says "140x50". It means "140 by 50" which is the weight I want to reach by my birthday. I have 3 weeks and 4 pounds to go. I can do it!

I bought an EatSmart digital scale through Amazon about the same time I started MFP. I've found it to be pretty accurate, and it's reasonably priced. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KXZ808/ref=oss_product
