  • Haha, I think the thing (the way I see it) is that you can train yourself to enjoy things that are actually healthy. My "yummies eaten" aren't what they used to be. Once I stopped eating added sugar in everything - things like fruit became amazingly (and deliciously) sweet. Fruit is my dessert now and tastes better than…
  • So here's the thing: I'm excellent at moderation at MOST things. Managing my money, exercise, balancing work/play, drinking alcohol, and actually with eating MOST foods. But sugary junk food? If I have a little, I turn into a crazy person who wants more sugar. It's like torture to stop. I can do it but it's a force of will…
  • I don't eat all organic either - when I do it's as much for ethical reasons as anything - I try to eat locally produced food as well and obviously that doesn't have much to do with nutrition either. I also eat free range eggs when I can, (or eggs from neighbors with free range chickens) because I feel bad for mistreated…
  • So what's your method? I'm assuming you're just talking counting calories/macros, but to me, that's the difficult way if I just eat whatever to get there. I can fit a donut or ice cream into my calories and macros every day, but if I eat that, it triggers me to crave junk food constantly. (my gluten issues aside on the…
  • First - I totally agree that "clean" and "processed" and "chemicals" are all terms that are subjective and that can be confusing. (or in the case of "chemicals" include everything...) Personally - I've found by doing my version of clean eating (no grains, no dairy, no added sugar) that I'm sensitive to gluten. Eat it and…
  • It isn't necessarily focusing on the wrong things. My weight loss is from a caloric deficit to be sure, but the caloric deficit I've achieved is from eating "clean". I eat vegetables, meat, some fruit, raw nuts, olive and coconut oil and that's pretty much it. I get the nutrients I need and I can pretty much eat all I want…
  • One of my instructors regularly points out that if you want to step your feet forward a bit in downward dog, do it. Maybe in a perfect world you never need to adjust, but it's better to move your hands and feet as you feel you need to to get your hips and arms feeling aligned than to flow without adjusting hand and foot…
  • Of course, but if I try to do a calorie deficit that includes sugar it is INSANELY DIFFICULT. If I remove added sugar from my diet, it's not that hard because I don't suffer from constant cravings. I've done it before, temporarily, while keeping sugar and bread and things like that in my diet but it took crazy willpower…

  • This is basically me too. When I eat sugar, I crave it incessantly. Ito doesn't matter if it's sugar, honey, stevia, whatever. Artificial sweeteners give me migraines, so that's out, even if I didn't think they aren't good for you in general. I eat fruit, but that doesn't trigger cravings for me. And I know everyone is a…

  • You definitely need a reasonable amount of salt to function. Just because too much is bad for you doesn't mean that too little is any better.
  • None of that sounds like too much fat or a binge to me. Fat is necessary for your body and good for your health. If you felt overly full afterwards, space it out and add in some more veggies, but don't feel bad about eating any of those things. All are great foods.
  • Never. Artificial sweeteners like Splenda, etc - all give me migraines. And even Stevia just doesn't taste right to me. I just add lemon or lime to my water for flavoring. If I want "soda" - I just drink plain sparkling water with lemon or lime added - ocasionally I'll add unsweetened cranberry juice or tart cherry juice…
  • I know this woman who is probably 5'10" and maybe 105lbs - has apparently been rail thin her whole life. She was ranting on facebook about how lazy Americans are and how easy it is to lose weight - just eat moderately and do a little exercise!!!. (I can tell you that never worked for me...) But what made me mad was - what…
  • My feet haven't changed size with a 30lb weight loss. They did actually INCREASE about half a size from doing a lot of yoga, but that's more that they got wider and un-scrunched up like they had been for most of my life.
  • I'm 5'8.5" and 174 right now and am pretty close to my goal weight - my ribs already stick out now. I don't really think I want to go under 165. But I have broad shoulders, muscular arms, wide hips and a small waist. It totally depends on your build. I can't imagine what I would look or feel like at even 140, let alone…
  • None of the above for me. Fresh fruit is the only sweetener I used for things like smoothies, etc. And I will eat dates if I'm out biking for more than 2 hours, but otherwise I don't do dried fruit either. It just isn't very practical to haul fresh fruit around with me on a bike and nuts don't cut it on mountain pass…
  • Same here - unsweetened almond milk is not only way lower calorie, but cow milk makes me feel gross and congested. I noticed a while back that it actually affects my sleep as well because I can't breathe as well at night. Eliminate dairy and no more problems with congestion. Obviously that's not true for everyone, but the…
  • The difference is glycemic index. Instant oats are a 66 Old Fashioned oats are a 50 Steel Cut oats are a 42 The lower the better (anything under 60 is generally considered low glycemic index) - meaning they take longer to digest/keep you feeling full longer and are better if you have any blood sugar issues/hypoglycemia/etc.
  • I definitely enjoy going out and buying smaller clothes, but I don't get rid of all my fat clothes anymore. I've done it in the past and had to buy new fat clothes and that's way more depressing. So basically what I've done this time around is sort through my closet - go through all the fat clothes and donate things I…
  • The average amount of cheese eaten in a year. Only I don't eat dairy/cheese... Heh.
  • I ride my road and mountain bike - it's hot here too, but if I go early enough or head up into the mountains it's cooler at elevation and makes the heat tolerable in the mornings or evenings. I don't mind getting up early to beat the heat either.
  • I totally did that and had the pair of jeans in my closet for literally like 3 years. Pulled them out yesterday and THEY FIT! I wore them to work. When they're that cheap, I don't see any harm. I mean, worst case, even if you lose enough weight, they don't fit right, but for a couple dollars, who cares.
  • Yeah, I had no idea on the height!
  • I'm actually 174 if that was to me! :) But I'm tall.
  • I know what you mean and I used to feel that way too. We pick up random stigmas to attach to numbers on the scale and sometimes they make no sense. My profile pic was taken at 175lbs and I like my curves. When I was younger, I used to have this bizarre belief that I was "supposed" to weigh like 125 because, well, I don't…
  • I'm 174 right now and the lowest I've been as an adult is 167, so I'm shooting for that at the moment.
  • Amen. When my weight fluctuates by 10lbs, almost all that difference is directly on my waist. And I can get a nice flat stomach, have all my ribs sticking out and still have plenty of fat on my butt and upper thighs. Those places are the absolute last thing to budge on me. My mother in law on the other hand has very toned…
