So a few thoughts..... And more questions... You say your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is 2200 calories.. And I'm not arguing here, just trying to understand, but could that be your TDEE? (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) if your BM is 2200, your target net calories really shouldn't be lower than this.... If I am interpreting…

Hi indyang, First, congrats on the 40 Lbs lost! I'm not sure why you think your net calorie needs have increased so much? You've been doing this a while, so I suspect you know the standard responses.... I'm thinking that eating 2600 calories isn't that terribly difficult, but if you want to lose more - then consuming less…

You say this calc as if everyone has accurate body fat % estimation available.... I know this can come off wrong and I'm not trying to be argumentative, but how about suggesting people use the tools already posted to find their BMR/TDEE or suggest a simple one like fat2fit... This calc potentially create just another…

I'd also add that MFP is simply taking off 500 cals a day for a pound a week or 1000 a day for 2 pounds a week.... So MFP thinks that your sedentary TDEE is 2150 and takes 500 off for your daly target to lose 1 lb and would take you down to 1150 to lose 2 lb a week, but MFP will not drop anyone below 1200 calories.... If…

Yes, i suggest that you NET your BMR at least. We can take an obvious extreme example, to highlight the point: if you had a BMR of 1450 and targeted 1500 a day to eat... Then work out aggressively you can burn 1000 calories in the workout... That would leave only 500 calories to fuel your body - obviously not enough. While…

Essentially yes. One thing MFP does that seems a bit odd is that it drops your target, but never lets that target go below 1200.... It may be better to target a person's BMR as a minimal number. Just an opinion. Also, given the way MFP "Asks" the question, I find many many people simply tell MFP what they "want" - and that…

Hi Danielle, So, I'm not a fan of making things too easy for people - but I certainly understand that this can be confusing at the start... You will want to actually read a fair bit about what it is you are doing when you count calories to avoid being consumed by the wealth of misinformation out there.... I grabbed a…

With so little information, it is very hard to provide a definitive solution; however, unless thereare significant medical conditions present....if you were actually taking in 1200 calories a day, you would be losing weight. So a few things may be happening.... Perhaps you are losing weight, but are retaining water that is…
-
So.... If you have been doing exercise, you can be reasonably confident that this is helping you retain your muscle... Given the shift you are seeing and measuring via pant size, etc.... I'd suspect that your BF% readings are fluctuating. BF measurement using bio electrical impedance (those devices/scales that have…

Hi nameless, As I suspect you know... Daily weight varies dramatically for lots of reasons.... Water retention being one of the most significant and obvious... I'd simply congratulate you on getting started and on losing In your first week! Slow and steady wins this race! Feel great - you are on your way with the first…

One minor comment I'd make is that even if we can be incredibly precise on the calorie burn required to lose a pound - the actual tracking of calories is based on estimates.... Someone's TDEE is only an estimate - Daily consumption is generally estimated - even for those who are disciplined (most people are not weighing…

A simple answer to your question in line with this thread might be : 15Lbs X 3500 = 52,500 calories..... approximately This is what you will need to burn off.... Now, to do so you need to establish what you should be eating each day that will slowly have you burn off a bit more each day than take in... and before you know…

No - Not Gluten Free: Referring to a book titled "Wheat Belly" : The author advocates avoiding wheat where all the evils of man are derived from the horrible facsimile of wheat that we are eating now based on the significant modifications that have occurred to the grain over time and with Genetic Modification. (Sarcasm -…

I believe you are confusing "Fat" as found on a Nutritional Label and "Fat" as we commonly refer to it in our bodies - e.g. non-lean tissue. These are not the same. OOps ACG Beat me to it :)

Hi Brittany, So a few comments I'd give: Count whatever you eat... Yes, you want to have fruits, veggies, lean meat and proteins, whole grains, take a multivitamin...etc etc etc... but the key is: **count what you eat and stay within your calorie targets.** Really that simple. The key to losing weight is to eat enough…

Often this idea is used to carry a few calories from days in which someone worked out to days that they do not (their intended rest days) and because of the lower calories available on those rest days they struggle with meeting their daily goal. Funny, I just had this discussion with someone this past week... anyway, I…

SO... I took a *quick* look at it seems you like carbs... not a huge deal - I don't have a "carbs will kill you" approach. Seems you also like sweets. Again, not the end of the world as long as you have these things in moderation - and you do have milk often - also adding to the sugar count. But not a bad food item to have…
-
Hard to tell without seeing your diary, but as mentioned juices are a common source of sugars... so is MILK if you really like it (also a great source of Protein and other nutrients, but high in sugar). If you like cereals some can be very high... add Milk to that and voila.... Also many prepared foods can be high in sugar…

Right! ^^^^^^ and this

Hi Sabrina. The message you see is a simple extrapolation assuming that, as it says, every day for the next 5 weeks is the same as "today". SO, your calorie count for the day was over what MFP thinks is the calorie count that you burn in a day. (this is based on your height, weight, gender, and daily activity level that…
-
I'm sure you have gotten this from the above posts, but I don't see it spelled out so hopefully this is helpful: MFP tells you 1200 calories because of what you told it. Based on your age, height, weight and gender, and activity level you told it, MFP starts with an estimate of your Total Calorie Burn in a typical day for…

If you are trying to achieve muscle gain, and keeping the answer more simple than perhaps it should be...adding weight.. Remember that to have on-going gain, you need to eating as well as exercising for it - e.g. Calorie excess and ensure enough protein!
-
^^^^^^ this Aside from potentially eating too few calories, I'm not sure you are doing anything wrong. The scale is fickle. Our bodies retain water for multiple reasons (salt/sodium task cause water retention, exercise /muscle repair by the body causes water retention, women's cycles cause water retention. - and water is…

Love this! Congratulations!

Thanks, Agreed, I do need a summer pic, but hopefully that tan will be day 200 or so and my mass gain program will have had some improvement.... Guess I'll see :)

I mixed up the workout... My schedule is very busy, so I get in what I can. Most common was simply an exercise bike with some light weight training included. I'm 5'5" and I ate at MFP's suggested calories for 1.5 Lbs loss for the first 2 weeks, then 1 Lb loss for the next 7-8, then 1/2 Lb loss for the remaining until I hit…

SO in response I'll give you my thoughts - and it's always great to hear other's views... You do not *need* to go to a gym to do this... particularly at a starting point. You have a number of options and home can be helpful for fitting into your lifestyle. You know I'm big on making this stuff fit into real lives as…
-
Well, I can't particularly speak to Kettlebell workouts specifically... but if you have just started and this is day 1 after your workout... wait for day 2. Many do not experience the soreness and stiffness you are referring to - resulting from new or increased exercise - until a little longer has passed - hence…

Many people post because they honestly believe they have an answer and, in my opinion, most everyone here *wants* to be helpful... Sure some are misguided... But if you read enough here you will find hose who's opinion you will give more credibility to, etc. while I've seen some very poor information circulated on MFP,…
