Mostly I feel really sad that people (like on Biggest Loser) don't get the support and education (CICO) to eat and exercise in a healthy sustainable way for a LIFETIME. That's why I like MFP -- we can get the support here, learn there is no magic, only CICO and lifestyle change to support CICO including exercise. Also, I…

Forgot to say that if I want more fat I can add some ripened avocado. [Here is my coffee smoothie (love it and low carb): 1/2 cup cold brew iced coffee (with nothing else); one cup unsweetened almond cashew milk (25 calorie version); 1 scoop ump vanilla protein powder (sweetened w/ stevia); a handful of ice cubes. Blend…

Blend and enjoy after lifting weights; afternoon snack; even for lunch…

Inspiring, helps me get through my cravings...."this too shall pass" (hard to believe, but it does, as your story illustrates). So much easier not to pick up the first one, than have to come back from a sugar binge (which is where the first one takes me). I'm 3 weeks back on my low carb, and starting to feel good again --…

Thank god for this thread. That article really burned me up -- the author, Gina Kolata wrote a book saying the same thing several years ago (basically you might as well give up on weight loss because you were born with a "fat" metabolism). I don't buy it, because I see so many success stories here with CICO and eating to…

You know the best time to pick up and get back on track -- right now. I love the proverb -- fall down 7 times, get up 8. That being said, I really, really try to stay away from cookies. I am the original cookie monster, and they just set off binging behavior for me. I hope someday to be really mature, and outgrow this, but…

Kolata isn't reporting on "evidence" she is reporting on a few individuals -- and without really even giving the facts. What is their muscle mass, what is their exercise regimen, and what are they eating (carbs, sugar, one of them chips)? What kind of social/psychological support are they getting. This is not science just…

I thought this article in NYT by Gina Kolata (who I have always found lite on nutrition/exercise science) was really lacking/stupid. There was nothing about muscle mass and weight loss, lifting weights vs. aerobic exercise, type of diets (carb heavy vs. carb lite), insulin resistence, etc. My experience with maintenance…

Cross fit is a lot of fun, and if you pick the right group, tons of good instruction on proper form for weightlifting, planks, pull ups, push ups so you don't injure yourself. I find it is great to mix up with biking, swimming and running. A lot of cross fit is high intensity interval training with core work and weights so…

As an older person (60s) I found I was injuring myself a lot lifting weights, so I started working with a trainer that specializes in injury prevention during weight lifting. Made all the difference in the world for me. She is a form dictator, and she makes me slow down, start with less that I think I should, etc. etc. I…

Artisana brand raw almond butter, raw walnut cashew butter -- really really good (and unfortunately too expensive). Just the nuts -- no salt, sugar or anything else.

I love using egg whites to get my protein -- a favorite dish cauliflower rice, shaved Brussels sprouts with egg whites, cooked together in microwave or in skillet -- lovely. I would eat whole eggs, but my calorie macro is 1500 to 1600 so egg whites help me stick to that. I also like cottage cheese, fish, turkey slices.

You could alternate some snatches and other kettle bell moves to target more muscles -- but hey, you are doing great. I love kettle bells for the reason everyone has been saying, because they are highly aerobic and also like weights. We frequently do them as part of our high intensity interval training at crossfit.

different people have different responses to carbs -- they just don't satiate me the way protein/fat does, and for that reason I eat a lower carb diet and use more of my calories for fat/protein. I get my carbs from vegies and some low carb fruits (apple, berries, etc) and stay away from other types of carbs as I keep to…

I find doing High Intensive Interval Training (HIIT) (I do crossfit but there is many different ways to do HIIT) has helped me amazingly with running/biking and rowing (sculling) and endurance in general. I only run about once every ten days because of my knees, but I have completed two 5 ks this spring, and felt great,…

I eat a meal with protein/fat/carb at 4 pm because that is my hungriest time of day. Then I eat a much smaller dinner that is more like a snack (although still protein/fat/carb. This is just my schedule! I also find eating a good breakfast helps me manage my hunger all day (but I know everyone is not the same in this…

I have arthritis in my knees and wear a HOKA shoes -- my trainer recommends them for people with knee problems. That being said I do High Intensity Interval training and run at most only once a week. But I can run a 5K without a problem. I'm trying to save my knees as long as possible, by running less frequently but still…

20 full body at boot camp -- but at crossfit we have to put our chest on the floor, and that is harder. I'm still happy I can do 20 at over age 60! I love how I feel when I do a pushup!

Just by way of example -- I weighted 246 at 5 ft 4 in when I started on My Fitness Pal, and was pretty active (I bicycle, row, lift weights, etc). I had to eat at about 1500-1600 to lose weight (about 1/2 pound per week) (and not eat back my exercise calories). I have lost a lot of weight (I'm at 185) and still eat in that…

I like to order grilled salmon when I go out, with green salad w/ vinaigrette. Filling and helps me stick to my calorie macros. I never get filled up on pasta -- just want more. But everybody has to figure out what works for them. A weekend favorite dinner out is at Indian restaurant -- tandoori chicken or shrimp with…

Yep -- weekends can be hard -- no set schedule, etc. The things that help me are to exercise first thing in the morning (I feel better when I exercise) and then eat my regular meals on time so that I don't get too hungry and reach for high calorie foods that cause me to exceed my calorie macro. Also I don't keep junk food…

I find eating lower carb helps me eat at a calorie deficit -- I don't have as many food cravings, particularly when I don't eat foods w/ added sugars and stuff w/ flour. I tend to use my calories for protein, lower carb vegies and high quality fats. I feel better, and exercise more because I feel better, more energy. I…

Wow -- great thread. I also have weekend problems. Things that help are: Exercise in the morning both Sat and Sun, doing exercise I like to do with people I like to do it with -- particularly longer bike rides, runs, bootcamp, crossfit, etc. Also try to plan good activities with people I like to be with. Try to mix up…

Osteoarthritis much improved. Mood much better Like to exercise and for longer Easier to plan meals/shop Less food cravings

Also, I like the electrolyte drink (it is a powder) called Ultima Replenisher -- it is very natural, sweetened with a tiny bit of Stevia. I use it for long distance biking/running and also helps with lower carb eating.
-
Have you tried the type of salt/mineral supplement that athletes use? I use Enduralytes by Hammner nutrition -- particularly when do long distance biking or running, but also when I eat low carb. Has sodium, and other things like magnesium, etc.

Hi -- I'm lower carb, which I do by not eating any sugar (except very low carb fruit), and don't eat bread/ flour stuff, including pastas. I get my carbs from non starchy vegies, and from a serving a day of lower carb fruit like strawberries, or 1/2 not very ripe apple. This plan seems to work for me.

So could relate. peanut m & ms are complete binge food for me -- totally easier not to eat them at all. Maybe someday (maybe in an alternate universe) but not today. Right now I could really get in trouble with sugary stuff so I am chewing sugar free gum, and drinking water. Soon time to eat my next meal, and I will be OK…

After about 9 months of really healthy low carb eating, went off the wagon over Easter, after injuring my back stretching. So fed up w/ back injury , and having to take time off from exercise, and stress of Easter cross country travel, etc. Upon eating sugar, immediate mental fog, arthritis and depressive response to…
