I’m going to agree with sijomial and send you back to the RD for more clarification. The number she is giving you is almost certainly TDEE and not BMR. Your current rate of weight loss is not excessive. 1650 might be perceived as a little low for your daily intake, but it’s not harmful either. Since you are working with a…

M Just remember that anything you do, no matter how easy, will start you on the road to improvement. You will struggle a little, but your body will feel better when you start moving again. After numerous injuries in the past 10 years, I have had to start over from scratch a number of times—and I am much older than you. One…

Key word is “personal”. So a good trainer should be happy to provide whatever service you want. However, as long as you are paying, it would probably also be worthwhile to listen to any other advice or ideas the trainer had, if any.

It’s a forearm/wrist trainer. You grab the handle with the rope/weights hanging, then twist the handle to “roll up” the rope and lift the weights. It’s also a big PITA to the people working at the gym because people who use it always leave it lying on the floor like this and never take the weights off, roll it up, or put…

If you are starting, it’s still a good idea to include the basics like squats and deadlifts. And to progressively increase to heavier weights. If your body responds by increasing more muscle than you would like, then you can decrease some volume and not progress weight as much. Also, your basic shape is genetically…

I had a detailed answer written which disappeared when I was checking another source :s In short: for an athlete such as yourself, doing those crunches poses little risk of injury, but IMO they are not the best in terms of the effort:benefit ratio. If you work hard enough, even at a mediocre movement, you can get some…

What is a foundational exercise for basic rehab is not always a good choice for regular training. PT clinics tend to see people at their weakest and people who need specific exercises. By the time they get to the point where they are able or need more advanced exercises, they are out of PT. Also, curl up you describe does…

And who said Smith machines were useless. :D They also great for incline push up progressions.

Calibrating the resistance is one of the challenges of working with bands. It’s also tricky because you want complete control, actually a brief iso-hold, at the end of the range of motion, and of course, that is where the resistance is strongest (and where your force development is at its weakest) and wants to pull your…

I have my own bag of bands, TRX straps and hip circle band. Thinking of buying a lat pull down bar because the ones at my gym suck so badly, but thought that might be overkill. Maybe I’ll just try to talk them into buying another one.

There are different ways of taking “rest days” — it doesn’t have to mean taking a day off. And cycling is a non-impact exercise, so doing 5 days in a row—especially for someone trying to establish a routine—is not that big a deal. Only speaking for myself, but that’s why I didn’t have a problem with it.

This exercise has it’s place—esp if you are stuck and have to improvise a body weight workout routine. I am not the biggest fan of using a fixed bar for a high row exercise. The vast majority of people cannot properly do a high row anyhow and the fixed bar just adds to kinesiologic confusion (my invented word). I prefer…

AnnPT77 mentioned it earlier, but if you had a large body that transformed into a smaller body, chances are you are going to lose muscle mass (and other forms of lean mass). And that’s not a bad thing—your body just needs less infrastructure.Even if you “lift heavy” chances are the muscle needed to lift the weights is less…

That’s a parody site, right?

I can never find two free triceps ropes, so I do his more “open” version of the face pull unilaterally. But having done (and tried to teach) a number of different versions of face pulls, I like his the best.

There is no tracker, algorithm, etc, available that I know of that can track calories burned during strength training. Even metabolic carts have limitations, as they cannot accurately capture EPOC. The only thing you can do is look at studies that look at individual exercise and try to extrapolate. Or look at the few good…

Dump: One of the chest presses Calf raise Shrugs Leg raise Cable chest Biceps curls for now Add: Rear deltoid exercise (google for examples) If you can’t do body wt dips and they have an assisted dip machine, consider substitute/ alternate dip for cable tri ext. Consider adding loaded carry (farmers walk and variations)…

You want to do more of a dynamic warmup than stretching. Bands, alternate movements, lighter weight set, etc.

It’s not that simple. Being “ill” means many things under many conditions. In general, there is probably nothing wrong with taking some days off—it won’t seriously impair one’s conditioning—but there is no reason to make such as overly simplistic recommendation.

Being retired now, I have the option of going at off times. However, sometimes it's not any better. You don't get the crush of newbies, but you have a bunch of doddering old people who do the exact same thing every workout and who "protect" certain machines like it was their lucky seat at bingo. And they NEVER clean up…

One of the advantages of a treadmill is that you can construct different types of interval workouts. These help pass the time and also help you improve both endurance and speed. The work intervals don’t have to be all-out—this is not HIIT. The simplest is to warm up for 5 min, alternate 1 min faster with 1 min slower and…

Tony G is one of the best there is. So is Boyle.

BTW, I liked the observation about the lack of start/stop positions. That was a clear oversight.

I think this is one of the better free articles for the non medical person concerning "runners knee". https://runnersconnect.net/runners-knee-symptoms-causes-and-research-backed-treatment-solutions-for-patellofemoral-pain-syndrome/ I don't like the term "runners knee" because it is non-specific and because it implies that…

I looked at that and thought "OK, there are at least 3 people who don't understand kettlebell swings". Even that video I thought had them raising the arms a little high, but at least it was being generated by the swing and not a separate "lift" at the end--maybe it was just a lighter weight for the demonstration. KB swings…

I’m still amused that this garnered so much attention. My career was in the fitness business, so I paid attention to the company, but I didn’t think anyone else did. I’m not used to my niche areas of interest receiving so much national attention. It was a bit of a shock that this blew up the way it did. It’s like waking up…

I think it is instructive to go back to Peloton’s statement after the controversy erupted: “We constantly hear from our members how their lives have been meaningfully and positively impacted after purchasing or being gifted a Peloton Bike or Tread, often in ways that surprise them,” a company spokesperson said in an email.…

I am lazy about links sometimes, but a story I read before posting my remarks used more sophisticated equipment to measure ground forces during running. Their research showed that, regardless of the footwear and even the running gait, similar amounts of force were produced. The body compensated for the amount of force…

I was speculating (I have a lot of time to do that now!) about the effect that menopause might have on metabolism and, even if the effect was slight, whether or not it would be noticeable. But absolutely the two factors that account for 85%-90% or maybe more of adult weight gain are, as you said, decreased muscle mass and…

I don’t have the references at my fingertips, but there have been a couple of studies in recent months that have raised questions about the whole “sustainability” issue. In these studies, not only did the lower-calorie (like under 1000 calories a day) initially lose more weight, but they kept it off better and longer as…
