  • Hello! Don't really do road cycling, although after one of the guys I ride with cycled to Barcelona last summer I'm tempted to borrow a bike from my local shop and give it a try. Mountain biking's my thing, generally out for at least one ride a week with a few of the guys. We've done a few organised rides but generally we…
  • Hope that pinch of salt isn't to big, that'll kill you too
  • Red meat can definitely kill ..... especially if it's still got hooves and horns attached and is chasing you through a field! Think I'll file this latest revelation along with the rest of them in the bin.
  • I think what you should say is too much sugar - "everything in moderation" and all that. For every article saying one thing there's another disproving it, I'll just stick to a nutritionally balanced diet thanks.
  • Use it to your advantage, and make sweets your reward - if you have a 1700 cal limit then eat to that and replace your calories burnt during exercise with a few reward sweets. Target met and you've satisfied your sweet tooth. I decided to not buy sweets/biscuits when shopping, as then when I want sweets there's none in the…
  • Try varying your routine and working other muscles as more muscles working = more calories used up.
  • Mornin' all. Hope you have a great Friday!

  • Shhhhhhh  Think gidge hit the nail on the head there, we're just being British.
  • I'd say it was because you need to reduce the calorie deficit as you get closer to your goal, it helps you and your body to adjust to things so that you don't reach your goal and then suddenly start eating your BMR which you said is 1000 cals more than at the mo - that would be a bit of a shock to your body.
  • It's a warning that MFP give to protect themselves from being sued for promoting people starving themselves. Your body won't go into starvation mode that quickly, although if you eat like that regularly then you metabolism will adapt to the lower calories and slow down. I wouldn't say one-off days are that much of a…
  • Definitely get some shoes, I'd definitely go to your local sports shop for a first pair so you can learn from them what type you need. Don't forget to keep track of the mileage on each pair of shoes and replace when the need arises - generally between 350 and 550 miles. Which reminds me, I need a new pair.

  • We'd all like it to speed up sometimes but it's better to do it slowly as there's more chance for you and your body to adapt to the change in lifestyle and then you have a better chance of not putting weight back on. Stick at it, 1lb a week is pretty good and you should be proud of yourself for doing well.
  • Am often found out on the mountain bike, sometime on horseback and more recently out running or playing a bit of badminton. I was a member of a gym a few years back, was ok but I'd much rather be outside whatever the weather.
  • If you make a bit extra for dinner in the evening then that can be a good alternative to take to work the next day, even just extra rice to then throw veg/tuna etc in is handy. You can buy in a load of salad stuff and make one to take to work, by changing what you make it with you can stop it from getting too 'samey'.…

  • It's a growing community, loved chairless' post :o) Just added you.
  • Berkshire here - reckon you'll have every county by the end of the day! Feel free to add me, you can never have too much support
  • The whole water thing is an interesting one, too much can be as much a problem as too little. Check the colour of your pee, too dark and you need to drink more, too light and you're drinking too much. I got a colour chart thing in a magazine I got with my Great Run stuff and committed it to memory, that's what I go by…
  • We ride every week, it's great fun isn't it! Hope to have a go at a cross country course this year and am looking forward to some evening rides to the pub in the summer too!
