  • Ok, you're going from zero to 20 in three months - totally do-able, in fact if you tried right now you'd likely be able to cycle 20k so really we're talking about time in the saddle and building strength to get that time down. For training do a mix of endurance (be sure to go past that 20k mark) and speed work, a 20k TT is…
  • 20g of protein a day is pretty low, I'd say MFP's settings are just fine. It's protein and fibre that keep you feeling full and therefore help to curb the snacking in-between meals that we are all guilty of. Have a read up on sources of protein and then work out your favourites and how to incorporate them into your diet…
  • I love my Garmin stuff, all works well, has good battery life and the Connect app is pretty good too. Mine mostly pre-date the vivoactive but I do have a Vivosmart HR which is very good and surprisingly accurate when compared to a chest strap. My mum has a first generation Vivoactive (the watch) and loves it, the second…
  • It's just one of those things, I had it tonight on the bike. There's probably a scientific reason to do with temperature and humidity but as far as I'm concerned it's either a wipe with the glove or good old 'snot rocket' and forget about it.
  • I'm usually exercising in the evening and before I've had dinner so I have a flapjack or the like beforehand to keep the energy levels up, might have a gel just before I start if I'm feeling a bit sluggish. I drink coffee all day so no need for a specific pre-workout cuppa.

  • Hi & congratulations on getting married. MFP's full of great people that'll stick with you through the highs and lows - it's what makes MFP so great! Oh and I'm from the UK too - there's even a Team UK Group (think it's called that).

  • Science in Sport are currently giving away 12 free gels via Facebook. I'm a big fan of their stuff and find that they do enough offers so that I never buy stuff full price
  • I've always used pace when running or on the bike, with the occasional glance at HR. If I use HR ranges it's only ever on the turbo trainer as it's easier to focus on it then.
  • That's an excellent point - presuming I can get my Garmin account to talk to these then there's nothing to stop me (or anyone else) from signing up to more than one of these things
  • Bikes are awesome! It never ceases to amaze me the amount of punishment my full sus MTB takes on a regular basis and yet still rides like the day I got it - and that's a few years ago!!
  • You should eat some of them back. Your body needs fuel for the exercise and also additional protein etc for recovery. It's up to you how much you eat back and a lot of that will be based on the accuracy of your burn - are you using a HRM to calculate it or are you using a figure calculated by algorithms? My HRM calculates…
  • Happens to all of us! Feel free to add me. Ironically it may well have been inactivity that led them here in the first place
  • Out of interest do you guys pay for the premium version or just the free one? I don't want to pay any subscriptions and I am wondering if it'll be worth my while getting a handful of points a day.
  • It'd depend how those calories burned are being calculated - HRM or MFP? I use an HRM but in my experience MFP has been generous when working out calories burned. Eating back less calories would speed up weight loss in the simplest terms. But you need to make sure you are re-fuelling and repairing your body properly so…
  • Give yourself short term goals and make the challenge running to the next junction or lamp post. Or if you feel like upping the ante make your challenge someone in front of you that you're catching - I find that very useful! You can do it. If you believe in yourself then you will do it.
  • I use them too  which reminds me, I must check the mileage on my current pair .......
  • Good to see that these things are worthwhile, will have a look into them. I've a friend who uses Bounts and they seem to think it's pretty good so I might sign up for that, the idea of getting free stuff for doing nothing extra appeals to me (even if I know they're probably just data farming).
  • Another Vivosmart HR fan here, does everything I want it to with good battery life and ease of use - the apple watch uses the phone's motion processors for steps etc, when I looked into it I couldn't justify the spend on what is essentially a dumb terminal for my phone. Whatever you get it'll be worthwhile, even more so if…
  • There are plenty of companies out there that'll repair it, there's no reason for that to be terminal - especially with the cost of carbon!! Get googling and see what you find.
  • Favourite workout - cycling, can't beat the rush of belting through the woods, usually in the dark! As for meals on the go, it's amazing how many variations of chicken/prawns and rice there are! Can really make the most of each calorie too. I also have protein bars for snacking on too - favourites of those being peanut &…
  • Hi and welcome to MFP! I've only toured the South coast between Sydney and Adelaide but loved it!
  • Thanks, I don't run that often but have done a few more runs of late after doing my first Olympic Duathlon in October. Shoes are good quality Saucony ones, I tend to use sportshoes.com which have similar bargains. By the sound of it they have a bit more life in them yet.
  • I'm with you on this! Why on earth would you measure blueberries in a cup? you buy them by weight - or at least last time I bought them they had 300g on the label not 2 cups. Although just in case the sue of a cup as a measurement doesn't get banned I'm off to design some kitchen scales that shun the metric system and…

  • Hi & welcome back! You'll love your course and will probably find that being able to put theory into action using your own journey helps you to understand what you are being taught in the classroom. I've certainly found that knowledge is key to weightloss and a healthy lifestyle.

  • Am in Berkshire, although am a Cornishman New friends always welcome :)
  • Strava or it didn't happen! Loving how all the different platforms are talking to each other automatically nowadays, I use my Garmins to record the data and that's where the detail is, but Strava's the social side of it as well as the competitive one to see how I'm doing against both my other rides/runs and my mates. I'm…
  • Yes, it all get's logged - even celery!
  • It seems like all your calories are crammed into one meal, it's probably better to spread them out a bit - maybe even branching out to a bit of breakfast? Best thing you can do is to read up on nutrition, use protein and fibre to keep you feeling full from smaller portion sizes. This also is how I learned that your immune…
