Out of curiosity, have you seen a doctor about this? If your period has stopped due to low calorie intake, shouldn't you fix that instead of taking the pill and possibly masking an already existing problem? I'm surprised nobody has pointed out this yet. Edit: actually there were a couple comments while I was writing this.

And actually that's the most important step when doing any kind of 'research'.

lol This is the best answer ever!

A small update, about 20 miles done up to now

I'm also in. First time doing this, but it's nice having a goal, hopefully I will be more consistent with exercise. I'll be walking for now and I'll be logging in km, so the target is 80km by the end of the month. [Edited to add ticker]

bump!

I moved to Japan 7 months ago and for the first 5 months I completely gave up on logging. I had too many things to do and deal with. But two months ago I started again and it's doable. More difficult, of course, I can't read any nutrition info, usually just the cal number - let alone there are so many products without any…

lol! but it would be less nerdy! oh wait, is nerdy hot? Damn, all this time trying to hide...

Nice explanation, although I suspect not many people will actually go through it. You don't even need to discuss a specific bond or molecule, the energy of microwaves is too low for any chemical reaction. Usually what I say to people is that microwaves have less energy than infrared/heat, so no need to worry

I'd say 6-7. For the whole holiday season, not just Christmas. I'm going home for about 3 weeks, which means 3 weeks of visiting friends and family and lots of desserts and food I haven't had for a long time. Plus, I won't have wifi all the time and most probably I won't be able to weigh myself so often. I'll try to keep…

Wow, you look fantastic! Congratulations!

I sympathize, I've been through this. The last month before finishing my dissertation I had no social life at all. I was working all night long at the uni - I would return home around 8am, sleep until 1pm, take a shower, grab something (crappy & full of fat) to eat and get back to work. It was summer break and there was…

I actually thought that was a clear reference to PhD comics :)
-
Used to be, I graduated 5 years ago... I gained some weight while writing my dissertation, lost it after I defended and then gained it all back and even twice as much during postdoc :(
-
I'd be skeptical about that. I can't tell what exactly it calculates and of course that doesn't mean the values it gives do not fall in reasonable ranges, but I bet it restricts them unnecessarily.
-
Dan, I've seen some of your posts and you seem quite knowledgeable, but how on earth did you end up with a single value for a "perfect weight"? That can't be right. It's reasonable to give a range, but saying "about 144 is perfect for you" doesn't make sense. What is the program you use? To Moosycakes, one comment: you…

I don't agree, I think it's important to be as clear and precise as possible when we talk science so that there are no misunderstandings. It took us several posts to realize that when you wrote "volume" you meant "mass". There are many ways to have pressure different than the atmospheric one, the simplest example being the…

OK, my understanding is that we agree, but the initial comment was not well phrased and lead to all this discussion. Still, it's interesting and more fun than what I'm supposed to be working on right now :) Just a couple more comments before I finally get back to work: Ok, but I get the feeling from your response that you…

Pu_239, I'll reply here for now, but if the discussion continues, perhaps it's better to exchange some PMs. I'm not trying to show off or annoy you, I just felt the need to clarify a couple things you said and were wrong. That's simply wrong. The density of any material is not carved in stone - it depends on temperature…
-
I don't know how you ended up discussing chemistry in this thread, but my nerdy self urgently needs to chip in: 1 cup of water does NOT have the same molecules with 1 cup of gas water simply because their densities are different. Or if we just use some common sense which is the best way (imo) to do any kind of science, if…

It's not mathematically incorrect. I think he point behind weighing yourself once a week is that even if you fluctuate up, after a whole week you'll have lost some weight anyway and the measurement will motivate you to keep going. Personally, I've been weighing myself daily up to now, as I kept losing some weight almost…

I totally sympathize, I also have a very hard time saying no to whatever is offered to me and sometimes when I know I ate something I shouldn't have eaten I end up eating even more "because the diet is ruined anyway!" Actually I used to think like that, I hardly do that anymore, and although I can't say I have it…

I'm not an expert but I'll tell you what I have understood from all the posts on starvation around here. When you don't eat enough, your metabolism slows down because your body interprets this lack of calories as starvation. As a result you end up not losing weight or losing very slowly, while you also destroy your muscle…

My boyfriend does most of the cooking too. We both enjoy cooking, but most of the time when we get back home from work in the evenings he's the one who cooks while I do some light cleaning to keep the house in a decent condition during the week. Or I help him a bit with chopping vegetables etc. It works well for us.

I was also thinking that this must be hormonal, but I'm a bit surprised, it's hard to believe that a few kilos off could do that. I've lost weight in the past but never had such an effect before.
-
That's a great idea, I'll do that! :) Thanks!

I have had iron deficiency in past and I try to increase my iron intake, but it's soo hard. Just a couple days ago I was looking up iron rich foods and I found two fantastic sources I had no idea about: 1) Clams! Just 10 clams provide 150% of the RDV! Mussels and oysters are also very good iron sources, but clams are for…

^This. I think there is a huge misunderstanding here with the use of the term "obese" for children. The point of the note is not to call your GD fat, but to let you know that there is a large difference between her weight and height for her age. Personally, I would be thankful that the school brought it to my attention. It…

I haven't had any compliments yet (I haven't lost much yet, but I will and I will look gorgeous) but most probably I'll have mixed feelings. On one hand, I'm working so hard to reduce my weight and improve my health and I'm really tempted to share my excitement about how well things are going with basically everybody (I…
