Depends on whether you're running it or driving it. If you're running it, you're doing great!

Funny how some doctors won't tell even their morbidly obese patients who have multiple serious weight-related problems that they should lose weight; while other doctors will tell every patient who walks through the door to lose weight. I had one doctor actually start writing a prescription for high blood pressure medicine.…

In general you won't get the best health care from a doctor that you don't feel comfortable talking to about your body. You don't have any real investment in this doctor-patient relationship yet. Maybe it makes sense to find another doctor. I'm your height and when I was younger and fitter, 130 would have been too high,…

You can do this. For another post from someone having trouble getting started, see http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/930632-no-where-to-turn-any-help-would-be-appreciated You mentioned a bad emotional trauma and a horrible two years. If that's related to the weight gain, you'll need to deal with it, if you want to…

Lots of good advice here. I'll add 2 more pieces to what i said before. 1) Write down your goals. (You can use the profile here on MyFitnessPal or anyplace else you like.) 2) Set intermediate goals. Don't worry about that whole, long path ahead. Pick some goals like * lose 2 pounds * exercise for 5 minutes today * track…

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. It's good that you turned it into the motivation to do something good. Something that may lengthen your life and the time you can enjoy with others you love and that they'll have you. I saw a quote earlier today that may apply... Now for some advice... first be kinder to yourself. You've…

I don't think it's terminology. It's more of a philosophy. You're eating with a "norm of a restrictive diet". I'm eating pretty much for the way I plan to eat for the rest of my life. Sushi and ice cream are part of what I normally eat... as is mac&cheese and lasagna. Pizza isn't, but that's because I don't like pizza much.

Excellent post! (Just read another post about foods people considered "cheating", which is very similar to the "off the wagon" concept, I think. And I really don't understand who they think they're cheating or why someone would want to cheat himself or herself?)

Good for you and congratulations! Walking's great exercise... lots of research backing that up. Some people won't think anything you don't do in gym isn't exercise. Your body knows the difference. Thanks for the excellent and successful example!

and As the person who asked why would I cheat myself... let me clarify. Yes, I enjoy food. I eat some chocolate almost every day, ice cream and cheese cake occasionally. I enjoy fruits, pasta dishes, alcohol, sushi and more, including many of the foods others are listing as "cheating". I go out to dinner and enjoy it. The…

Nothing. Why should I cheat myself?

Ramp up slowly. Here are a bunch of ideas to make it easier: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Robin_Bin/view/water-265761 ETA: And don't try to drink too much at once. Keep water or another drink by you as much of the day as possible, and drink a sip every time you think of it.

While most of the men in my classes are relatively "thin", there are several heavier set men. They seem to find it useful and keep coming back.

The sugar in fruit is not usually worth worrying about. (Unless you have a specific medical condition, like diabetes.) Many of us do not track sugar because the sugar in healthy foods, like fruit, can be misleading. Look at the sugar in other foods (not fruit or vegetables) or sugar added to processed fruit (like in…

Oh my gosh, no! potatoes are a given... I can't believe I didn't say it though. I wonder how turnips would be too? Too strong a taste for the blend?

Love how the tea advertisements are coming up in this thread. Last post I got a Celestial Season's ad for Sweet Dreams on the side and a Republic of Tea along the bottom - Tea101 - haven't see than one before. (edited to correct the tea name... Tea101 not 100 and it's an education series, not a flavor - LOL)

Yogi tea is a brand. Didn't check where you're from, but it's available in the U.S. at grocery stores like Kroger, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and also in many health food stores. Krogers may have it with the "health food" section instead of the regular teas... depends on your store. I expect most of the other large chains…

The diuretic effect of both is basically negligable. I've included links to the research and medical sites in this blog entry on water (and things to add to water): http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Robin_Bin/view/water-265761

Yes, their basic tea is blah and usually bitter. Try some of these others. In my previous post, I totally forgot peppermint -- nice fresh taste and very good for relieving a headache or tummy ache. Celestial Seasonings and Twinnings which have been mentioned have some good, basic teas. If you want a plain, black, Red Bud…

Yum! Licorice Spice is naturally sweet. Stash has lots of good teas -- green, black, white, red (rooibos), herbal. They have more than one hazelnut, so I'm not sure which you're trying, but enjoy! They also have a few chai, including a chocolate chai and a lemon ginger that I really like. (Other people seem to too; we keep…

Yum! I love corned beef. Corned beef and cabbage, even better! Posting for the reminder to come back and look (and to search out some recipes). I was surprised that corned beef brisket had a higher protein to fat ratio than i expected. Four ounces from Trader Joes has 180 calories, 28 g of protein, 6 g fat and only 2 g…

As I said in an earlier post, I get migraines from aspartame. But if others want to ingest it... their choice. (Although I'll continue to suggest it as a possible cause of migraines to others who suffer from them.) However the argument quoted above struck me as particularly bad. There are people who have been smoking…

Triggers migraines and other pain for me, so I avoid it. (By the way, a couple of times I've gotten sick because I ate something that I didn't know had aspartame. For instance, once I ate a different variety of bread from a brand that I'd been eating. Sadly, I liked the bread, so I had a few pieces in one day... I didn't…

Many people on this site try to lose weight by extreme, low-calorie diets. (Thinking less is better.) So, there are a few guidelines about not going lower than... * BMR * TDEE-20% * 1,200 calories If you are working with a knowledgeable doctor, nutritionist or other medical practitioner, with experience in losing weight…

Some do. However, being overweight and loose neck fat is one of many possible causes of snoring. So, there is a correlation between being overweight or obese and snoring. Depending on the cause of your husband's snoring, losing weight may help or even stop the snoring.

Nor thigh gaps. To the Original Poster (OP): Unfortunately you asked this after a particularly stupid posting thread went on for 100s of posts, where that OP asked a similar question, and disagreed with all the knowledgeable responses for 12 pages. Another thread…

No, jocemorg. Some people are here to gain weight; some to build muscle; some to track specific nutrients or things like sodium. We are not all here for an ultimate goal of losing weight... even the "right" way. That said, you are correct that it's much better and fits the OP's stated goal of being healthier to lose in a…

Yes, it's too little. As always there are exceptions... like medically supervised diets with nutritionists and regular testing. Too little makes it more likely you'll have problems sticking to it for the long-run (instead of yo-yo dieting), binges, craving and health and cosmetic issues -- early symptoms are hair falling…
