That is still hard for me to do. I've found that making a spreadsheet (with Excel or just paper) to calculate the calories is helpful. I write them down as I add the to the pot/pan. Exercise and eating right is the way to do it. Don't trust some magic pill or starving yourself. I count my calories and check labels carefully now. I won't go near a frozen pizza these days. Why have a bite of a pizza when I can have an entire chicken breast for the same calories? (Obviousy the chicken is lower in fat.)…

I don't count tea (unsweetended/sweetened with no calories) or spices. EVERYTHING else goes in MFP. Even if you eat salad with only lettuce, tomato, and cucumbers, that is still part of your day (maybe 50 calories).
