My biggest recommendation to first time triathletes or adult swimmers is this: before your race, get at least one open-water supervised swim in. There is no true mental prep for open water swimming, other than open water swimming. Some people say you can find a pool that's super deep and try swimming with your eyes…

Chips of any kind. Try to keep them away from my house at all times.

First off, grats on coming back and doing awesome for your 10k. You can send me a request to GekkoElite. Good luck training!

No goal is silly. There is nothing measly about 450 miles in a year either. It's all a matter or perspective. My friend who is a runner and casually bikes, his goal in a given year is maybe 200 miles, mainly for the sake of cross training and a change of pace.

I had a tough time when I first transitioned. Here is what I did.* I didn't have a trainer, but this worked well for me...when getting on bike, straddle, then clip in 1 foot, lean to opposite side, have clipped foot pedal up but towards the front * Push off with clipped foot, then use middle of non-clipped foot to help get…

I wish I had some better advice for you. I used to be really big on various charity races, but the constant fund raising wore me out. I will still fundraise and do races...I will be at the Bike MS as well this year, but I don't feel guilty because I am not as motivated or enthusiastic. I know that going out and supporting…

Nice, good luck @emsmom8

Those are great goals @wxfisch. Gearing up for triathlon is always a pain.

I use Withings scale, mainly because I love metrics and numbers, plus it was the only smart scale on the market when I got it (I use Garmin devices, so I would probably get their scale if I got a new one). Unless you are really into other metrics, I would recommend sticking with a digital scale. Smart scales are not really…

I am interested to know the idea behind 20k LR as well for a half. I have only seen this sort of training for build-ups where a runner is planning on doing a fast half, but everything, including race, is prep for a marathon later (or farther distance).

@theowlbox This is really awesome to know. My wife uses those a lot, and I start my swim training in about 6 weeks, so I'll be in the pool a good bit each week. Thanks!

As noted, no device HR is every truly accurate, but Garmin, Polar, TomTom and higher end FitBit devices will adjust and learn based on your activity level. So initially, they all kind of stink, but will get better over time. So get a device that your friends or motivating people in your life use, as that will aid you in…

@theowlbox Aren't those masks for face only?

Lake Placid is an awesome race. I am looking to do the IM there next year for my first IM.

I have been struggling to stay away. Fortunately life is preventing me from gaming much lately, so that will hold me back for now. But I am sure I'll be back once life gets less crazy and I'll be horde tanking all the way!

@dewd2 So you are going to make me jealous I didn't sign up for Pitt this year AND you got to see both watches. Way to rub salt in the wound. :p

Anyone can always feel free to add me. I am always commenting, supporting, and blogging.
-
Just to add to @7lenny7 depending on your macros in calorie deficit, you might already be getting enough carbs anyway, so your glycogen may already be fine. If you are doing caloric deficit and trying to do low carb, you might need to add in some carbs though.

Garmin is #1 right now, so you can't go wrong with their product line. In my opinion, TomTom's Spark series is amazing too. Super simple interface, amazing GPS, HR accuracy in line with Garmin and Polar. As mentioned, don't religiously follow the calories, as no HRM is super accurate. However, it's still good enough to…

Check-in: I am at 142 mi out of 4000. Doing horribly since my bike is in storage right now. Getting it out today and tuning it up asap...especially because I technically just started my cycling training plan, haha!

For basic HR and tracking, phone is always best to start, since virtually all tracking apps will sync with any BT HRM. You can get a bike phone mount on Amazon insanely cheap. However, Polar M450 is a super budget-friendly and really awesome bike computer. I have a bunch of friends who love it...and at around $170 or so, I…

Yeah, I am hoping a vendor will have one at the Broad Street Expo this weekend so I can try it on. In regards to the ride, it looks pretty smooth for the most...some spots look like it hopped off, but pretty decent. I am wondering how it does in city areas...I typically won't be anywhere as building-dense as NYC, but I…

From what I have found, with the Garmin 920xt with quick release kit, the thickness and weight are just under the 5x. So for me at least, the weight and bulkiness of the 5X wouldn't be much a change. And @NorthCascades the GPS is better for the 5x vs. 3 or 3 HR per reviews, but based on current complaints to Garmin, the…

I have read a bunch of forums and my decision still isn't easier. I came across dwMap, which is an amazing app for mapping. I got to try it out on my 920 this weekend and now I'm trying to decide if I even get the 935 or 5x. I also found out that there have been lots of reported GPS accuracy and signal issues with the 5x.…

Does anyone have the 5x and can tell me their experience with turn-by-turn functionality? I guess a beep would be good, but is it loud enough to hear if I am going in the low-mid 20 mph range?
-
@ritzvin I used to have that adapter. However, for triathlon it's not convenient to use that mount at all. Hence why I use quick release bike kit for my 920 now. I agree that adapter will be great for utilizing the watch for rides where I want to use the GPS capabilities of the 5x. I guess I just want the best of all…
-
@NorthCascades Have you used turn-by-turn directions yet? How difficult is it with it being on your wrist? Since the 5X doesn't have a bike kit like 935...I am trying to figure out how useful the map functionality will really be if I need to pay attention to the road AND look at my wrist.

Love Gu. Didn't before, but in training for IM and eventually qualifying for Kona, I need my fuel to be lightweight and I have found Gu in mass quantities during really long workouts doesn't make me sick during or after. Most other gels do for me. I still hate the flavors, but as long as my body is fine with it, works for…
