  • It depends on the marinade. I won't log a marinade that is mostly vinegar and herbs. I will log one that has a lot of oil or high cal sauces. I usually log those by entering the highest calorie ingredients and call it a day.
  • 1. Salt. 2. Heat. Seriously though, it's steak. Bring to room temp, season, grill. Don't muck it up and it will taste fine. Here is a very basic recipe from Good Eats that really is salt, oil, and heat. Your other options apart from dry seasoning are marinade the steak and grill it. It will still be pretty low cal if you…
  • I love stir fry! I generally use sesame oil, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and minced garlic. Other things I've added include honey or brown sugar, red pepper oil, a splash of beer or woodchuck draft cider, ginger paste, and green onions. I have no idea on the measurements, I change ingredients and portions depending on what…
  • Usually people get "rude" or "mean" when someone clings to an unhealthy idea and ignores the first few rounds of politely offered advice, or when they are asking about an idea so unbelievably dumb that the idea (not the person) deserves every bit of ridicule, scorn and derision that the entire internet can heap upon it…
  • "Healthy" doesn't necessarily mean "good for weight loss," so keep that in mind when asking these questions. Nuts, granola, etc are actually fairly high calorie and healthy, and very, very easy to overeat. Please consider looking up the calories of the foods you already eat, and see if you could eat them in a smaller…
  • The reward for losing weight is losing weight. That said, I also have "treats" built into my plan. I may not have ice cream and beer, but I can usually have ice cream or beer.
  • I used to eat them, but they aren't very tasty or filling for the calories to me. I'd rather have a bell pepper sandwich and a protein shake, which I guess just proves that there's a wiiiide range of personal preference. ;)
  • You seem more concerned that people think your unhealthily low calorie diet is a quick fix idea than that your diet is unhealthy. It doesn't matter how nutritious your food is, starving is starving. If you really, truly want to cut out sugars and complex carbs, by all means do. It's not necessary, but it's not unhealthy…
  • This time around, I didn't care about motivation. I decided it was time, after the second kid and lazy eating, to lose weight. I don't know what was different this time, but something was. I am getting close enough to goal that I'm afraid I'll lose momentum. Because sometimes you get tired. Choosing every day to do…
  • Hold up, when did eggs quit being animal protein? Is there an ovum shrubbery somewhere I don't know about?
  • "Unrealistic" in this case is expecting to maintain a 1000 calorie a day diet long enough to lose 40 pounds. "Unrealistic" is thinking that is at all healthy. "Unrealistic" is thinking you will actually keep the weight off. The reason you feel like you are torturing yourself is, well, you are. The slow and steady weight…
  • The most common beginning mistakes are: 1. Changing too much too fast. --so don't replace every meal with something new right away. 2. Eating too little, getting hungry, then eating way, way too much. --so don't think "diet food" is all 100 calories or less. 3. Labeling foods as "good" and "bad." --some food is high…
  • “If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you’ll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren’t so lazy.” ― Terry Pratchett, The Wee Free Men
  • What others have said, as well as.... It will take people you see every day longer to notice than people you see infrequently. Family/friends/coworkers may notice at different times. Your wardrobe may hide your weight loss, and people might not notice until you get new clothes. Someone may notice, but not want to say…
  • Unless they are three cookie sheet cakes, you're fine. Just plan for it next time and you can have three cookies as part of your diet. Man, I love calorie counting.
  • I think it's possible to get rid of the "Mommy Apron." Hard, but possible. Age, amount of weight lost, speed of weight lost, genetics, etc. all probably play roles in the apron going away. Here is another thread with some success stories, and it links one of my favorite threads in the forums on getting a flat stomach. I…
  • If it's torture, change what you're doing. Or keep torturing yourself, if that's your thing. Just remember: 1. The safe word is "banana." 2. If you want to quit, you can change your calorie goals to lose 1 or .5 pounds a week and just lose weight slower instead. Good luck. Starting was the hard part for me, and learning to…
  • Yeah, this is the only "diet" where I get to eat pulled pork, steak, burgers, ice cream, cake, etc. and lose weight and feel good. It's also the only "diet" that has made asparagus, brussel sprouts, and salad taste amazing. I'm glad I have "time" for it.
  • MFP will figure out a deficit for you, based on the info you give it. Basically, it will take your height, weight, and the activity level you give it and figure out how many calories you need to stay the same weight, and then it will subtract calories from that number based on how much you want to lose. A pound a week is…
  • ^^ All of that. Also, play around with what you eat for your calories. A soft boiled egg and toast leaves me feeling full longer than the equivalent calories in cereal and milk. Your mileage my vary.
  • I have a full spice shelf, an herb garden, and I use a lot of vinegar. My favorite right now is sherry vinegar, but we also have balsamic, red wine, rice wine, apple cider, and malt vinegar. Also, when it counts I use olive oil, sesame oil, butter, or bacon grease. I include the fats with the seasoning because they really…

  • Seriously OP, eat less than you burn for weight loss. From what you've said about body type goals, consider lifting. Here are some of the lovely lifting ladies of mfp, and read this. [Edited by MFP Mods]
  • Someone sued over this, but I think they voluntarily dismissed the suit. The idiot was taking the cap off of spray bottles and pouring the oil on salads. I'm more surprised by that level of stupidity than the fact that oil has calories.
  • I'd order the pulled pork sandwich w/ bbq sauce on the side, but I eat a lot of pulled pork sandwiches at home and they usually run 300-400 cal with my portions/ingredients. The portabello mushroom salad looks delicious, or half of that salmon sandwich. Ooh, and the smoked chicken w/ bbq sauce on the side. Actually,…
  • I like baked sweet potatoes. Sweet potato and black bean empanadas are good, but a bit more work than I've wanted to put into cooking lately. Soy dijon chicken thighs with sweet potatoes are much less labor intensive and also very good. I want to try sweet potato corn cakes and a slowcooker version of this lentil, sausage,…
  • Your profile says you've lost 32 of 34 pounds. Is this accurate? How much are you trying to lose a week? If the answer isn't "only .5lbs or less" then I think that's your problem. The less you have to lose, the slower you should be trying to lose it. Near the end you should be eating so close to maintenance that poor…
  • I drink a protein shake that's just protein powder and water after lunch most days. It helps me hit my goal and fills me up for those last few hours in the work day. There are high protein low cal foods out there, so the powder isn't irreplaceable, but it is convenient.
  • What @faidwen said. None of the "extras" help, unless you're taking a doctor prescribed medicine for a specific condition. You don't need to jump start, confuse, or reset your metabolism--you just need to eat a little less than you were before. Good luck and remember: baby weight isn't some special, magical fat that's…
