  • Well I don't know that I'm fabulous looking but I do have 2 kids and am at my goal weight, LOL! I don't really know how much protein I'm taking in, but generally I seem to get enough. I eat chicken, turkey, occasionally fish, eggs, and some red meat. I don't use protein shakes, just because I'm not a big believer in…
  • It's not just a matter of whether or not the lactating mother is drug free and healthy, although those are points to consider. It's also about whether the milk was safely stored / refrigerated / frozen, etc. It doesn't hurt babies because most babies are nursing right from the tap or drinking pumped milk that has been…
  • Oh yeah! For me I'd say it really kicks in around mile 4. I'm not particularly fast so that's probably around 38-40 minutes in. I do a long run every week but it's not a huge distance. Ran my first half in October and right now I'm just trying to maintain a 9-10 mile base over the winter. Come spring I'd like to start…
  • Ditto. We've had our Sole for probably just over 3 years now; still great. It does get considerably more use in the winter than in the summer, because I prefer to run outside except when the temp dips into the low 20's or colder, but it gets a fair amount of use and has held up well.
  • Butternut squash pureed makes an AWESOME pasta sauce. I used this recipe, but you could leave out the cheese (although the amount here is minimal) and sausage if you want to make it even lower fat, and it would still taste yummy. It tastes just like a cream sauce without being a cream sauce. :)…
  • You look amazing - what an inspiration! :)
  • I'm an Asics fan though I've also run in New Balance and Adidas. Nikes NEVER fit my foot right. I was in the Asics 2100 series for a long time but just moved up to the Gel Nimbus and I love them! Completed my first half this past October. :)
  • Nope! I have one 12oz can of regular full-sugar Coke a day. I don't drink coffee, only iced tea in the summer sometimes, so that's how I get my caffeine. I can't stand the aftertaste of diet drinks. Other than my morning Coke, it's water the rest of the day (no juice or anything like that).
  • Oh, things worth trying - couscous, pretty much all the squashes - spaghetti squash, butternut squash, zucchini, yellow squash . . . different kinds of cheeses . . . But what are you looking for? More protein sources or more fruits/veggies? I've also found for me that how something is prepared and spices/flavors that are…
  • Oh yeah, I'm picky! :) I AM better than I was as a child, though. I will actually try some new foods now. And my main issue is texture, rather than flavors. I'm super-picky about certain textures. I'll eat green beans but pretty much any other bean is out of the question; I HATE gritty textures. Or tapioca - yuck! Once,…
  • My average pace on shorter runs is around 9-9:15 min/miles. For long runs, anywhere from 9:30-10:30 depending on how hilly the course and how I'm feeling that day.
  • Average 20-25 miles a week, run 4-5 days per week with all but one of those being in the 3-4 mile range and then on either Saturday or Sunday I do a long run, aiming to keep it around 9-10 miles over the winter. Did my first half marathon this past October and I'd like to do another half next year. Eventually I'll do a…
  • LOL, this^^ ! Except I'd say wait until you're at least 35. :) I'm 39, 40 in March, and yes, aging sucks. Technically, I am in better shape now than I was in my 20's, but that's not because I was overweight, then; I was just partying. I'm in probably the best shape of my life now, but frankly, that's because I work HARDER…
  • It is true. :) I loved it for a long time. I smoked from 1991-2002, averaging half a pack to a pack a day for a long time. The first time I quit was in 2002 because my boyfriend at the time (now my husband) was a non-smoker and even though he never said a word or pressured me (smart move on his part) I knew he didn't like…
  • ^^ same. Basically anything that doesn't hook over the ear falls out when I run so I just buy the cheapest (like $10-15) over-the-ear hook ones I can find at Target and they usually last me about a year, year and a half.
  • ^^ Mostly, this. I have just genetically bigger calves, e.g. always had a bit of trouble finding knee-high boots to fit, but as I got more serious about running and lost some weight I lost in my legs and calves became more defined, but definitely not bigger. In fact, boots fit me much better now.
  • I like Bob Harper's Kettlebell Cardio Shred. Where to start depends on your fitness level, IMO, and also be advised that kettlebell workouts will work new muscles. I started with a 12lb kettlebell and I don't consider myself to be "weak" e.g. I was doing full-press pushups (like a set of 15-20 at a time, nothing…
  • I started back at 4 weeks pp but I have been a runner off/on for over 15 years and was working out some (not running, mostly elliptical and yoga) throughout my pregnancies. I would wait until you have clearance from your doctor at 4 or 6 week pp checkup.
  • I've been at a "normal" weight pretty much all my life but struggled to lose the last 10lbs of baby weight after my son, hence joining MFP. Have since lost it, just maintaining, don't even log all that religiously. 1. They eat small quantities of food. - Yup, usually true. 2. They don't finish everything on their plate. -…
  • I've never been speedy. My runkeeper handle is SlowJen, LOL. Fastest mile splits on short runs are around 8:20 but anything over 4-5 miles I now average more like 9.5-10 min/miles. Only official 10K I did I think I was at 62 minutes - that was 2011 and I was a little slower. Just finished my first half marathon in 2:10.
  • Good lord, no! But mine are only 4 1/2 and 2 1/2. They eat a fairly balanced diet overall, fruits and veggies at every meal, but they also get sugary stuff here and there, probably 4oz of watered-down juice a day, otherwise water or milk. They are both at healthy weights and I let their appetites be their guide. We play…
  • A very sensible approach! Esp the part about giving yourself a pass on one day (Thanksgiving or Christmas) does NOT mean go nuts for the whole "season."
  • Not gonna log it. :) But, I'm at my goal weight and am just maintaining so not worried about one bad day. I'll have a little bit of everything and just try to keep to reasonable portions. Fortunately for me, I can't stand pie!
  • "Ask your doctor if getting off your *kitten* is right for you." "If we're both being chased by bears, I don't have to outrun the bear; I just have to outrun YOU." :)
  • That's tough. I know how it feels to miss running. Hopefully some others will chime in. As much as you want to get back out there, I'd be inclined to say stay off of it, in part because it's the big toe and not a smaller toe, and I know at least for me, my big toe kind of helps to push off in my stride.
  • LOL! Your husband is nuts. Tons of people enter 5Ks with no previous running experience. Many people walk them. Just line up toward the back of the pack and have fun! :)
  • Yes, it does stink. :) I only discovered that I was lactose intolerant last year, though reflecting back it was probably building for a while. I pretty much either stay away from all dairy - including butter, although I can tolerate margarine, which has very little real dairy in it - or else take a lactaid (generic) pill…
  • Yup, this. I don't need a light to see where I'm going. As I mentioned above, I DO get blinded sometimes by oncoming cars with their brights on, but a headlamp or flashlight wouldn't really help with that. I kind of find it odd that people need a light to see outside at night, unless you're in a more rural area (which I am…
  • Yup. :) Mostly on the road back in my subdivision, and then on the sidewalk out by the busier road, but I run in the dark without a light. Just reflective vest so cars can see me. I'll tell y'all what bug the cr@p out of me, though. It seems like every freaking car on the road in my area has their brights on ALL THE TIME.…
