At the beginning of my diabetes journey, I stumbled upon a site with a host of people from all around the world who pointed me to Bernstein's book, bloodsugar101. I was lucky. Very lucky, although I struggled back and forth for many months. During this time I researched all that I could on the subject, and have delved even…

This is an even better one, and it's shorter and explains more of the science behind it. He coins a term I had never heard which explains not only diabetes types I, 1.5, and 2, but non-diabetics with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. He calls them, and us, carbohydrate intolerant. It explains so much, even people…

I want to apologize for my post. It was utterly uncalled for, I don't know what got into me. I have been taught to not interfere with someone's livelihood, and for that, I truly apologize. No one deserves to be spoken to in such a manner. My deepest apologies.

I can't thank you enough for this post. It's so helpful when there's someone out there who understands what I'm going through. Yes, there has been a change, and I can't quite put my finger on it. The body is smart and will adapt at some point. You are right about the one meal a day... I found it difficult.. Not so much the…

Thank you. When I'm hungry and haven't eaten in a long time my blood sugars tend to go high. I'm never hungry late afternoons or at night anymore, so they tend to stay stable there (rarely over 90s, and mostly in the 70s at night). I liked the idea of eating many meals in one day, over a shorter day for me because of the…

Not to be rude, but you aren't a diabetic, and have very little knowledge about diabetes, as I've seen from your previous posts. Also, the product that you promote with that user name is truly terrible for diabetics for more reasons than I can count. By your own admittance, you are a representative for Glucerna. If you…

Genetic factors and a sleep medication known to cause diabetes. Ugh.

The only problem with cinnamon for diabetics is that it works by forcing the pancreas to produce more insulin. We diabetics have trouble producing effective insulin as it is. And, sadly, once our beta cells (producers of insulin in the pancreas) burn out, they are pretty much gone for life as we don't produce many more…

Wheat tends to stay in your system for 3 to 5 hours, not the proverbial 1 or 2. As for fiber, Only insoluble fiber can be discounted from total carbs, and it's very difficult to tell which is soluble and which is insoluble, so I count total carbs, as well. I try to not go over 30 grams of carbs per day. Excess protein may…

Wheat bread is definitely a thing of the past, too. And, it's probably the likely culprit. But, there are other breads that we can eat. I make a 70-second Flax Bread in the microwave. Two slices is 6 carbs. With diabetes, our body can no longer process the carbs we used to eat properly. That system is just broken, so we…

I stopped all diabetes meds 9 months ago, too! Just diet (very little exercise). My last two A1Cs have been 4.7.

You can do it!!! I was exactly where you are only a year or so ago, so I get it. And let me tell you, if I can do it, you certainly can. :)

High blood sugar makes one feel like they can eat half a mammoth and still be hungry. Carbs make our blood sugar soar because that system in our bodies is broken. We just can't process them. A better breakfast for us would be bacon and eggs, hold the toast or Anything with carbohydrates. If you are going to have carbs,…

I use Heavy Whipping Cream in mine. Fat does not make your blood sugar rise, and it's delicious. I used to be addicted to coffeemate creamer before I was diagnosed. It was loaded with carbs which wreaked havoc on my blood sugar. Heavy Whipping Cream saved the day, and you don't need much in it.

Being a diabetic Sucks!!!! When I was diagnosed, that is exactly what I needed to hear, because that is exactly what I was feeling. It gets better. It gets easier. It becomes, in fact, with new dishes and new ways of eating, quite enjoyable. I couldn't think of any other way I'd rather eat now. Of course, I'm on an LCHF…

Actually, there is something that you should be aware of. I, too, went on a cinnamon supplement, the Kroger's Advanced Formula of Cinsulin. It's a Cinnamon/Chromium/Vitamin D supplement (Don't get the Costco's kind, it doesn't work). It brought my fasting BGs down 20 points (mg/dl), so about like you. Trouble is that it…

Shyfig, even though your breakfast was very small, as diabetics, it's less about the amount we eat and more about the carbs we eat. Everything is about carbs because our pancreas does not produce enough effective insulin to be able to deal with them. I encourage you to go to bloodsugar101.com and read it from cover to…

Nope. Absolutely no cheating. I make an extremely low carb pumpkin pie, no sugar or flour, with heavy whipping cream instead of condensed milk, a low carb crustless cheesecake, skip the apple pie because that's just loaded with carbs, herbed flax meal bread at 5 carbs for 2 slices, etc... cauliflower mash instead of mashed…

45 grams of carbs may be too much in one sitting, especially if it contains wheat. And wheat can affect BGs for over 2 hours. It's one of those things that digest slowly. There is a book written by a diabetic cardiologist called 'Wheat Belly'. It's quite popular and quite telling! He was able to get his diabetes under…

Chicken Parmesan, heavy on the cheeses with no breading is absolutely wonderful, very low carb, and filling. It also freezes very well. You can make a huge batch for the whole family. This is a family favorite.
-
Chinese food has this affect, generally. It can last for many, many hours. Read Dr. Bernstein's book, The Diabetes Solution. He goes into detail about the "Chinese food affect".

Why do we have to miss bread? I make 70-second Flax Bread, 5.6 carbs for 2 slices (including hidden carbs). It's made with mozzarella cheese, an egg, a quarter cup of grated cheddar cheese, 1/2 tablespoon of baking powder, 2 tablespoons of flax meal. Whip it all together, let it sit for a few minutes to thicken, take a…

Agreed!! Lowering blood sugar and preventing spikes on a very low carb, moderate protein, and high fat diet enabled me to lose the weight within 6 months, and incidentally get me off of all medication. I've since been maintaining, but I really do have an additional 10 pounds I'd like to shed.

I, too, am below 30 grams of carbs per day, but that has to be accompanied by high fat, as fat does not raise your blood sugar. Lately, I've been drinking a wonderful chamomile tea with a tablespoon of heavy cream and a tablespoon of coconut oil, sweetened with liquid stevia. It's positively delicious, both calming and…

Definitely will do.

I guess I'm a bit of a hippie, too. ALA increases glucose absorption. So, I have begun to take them with meals. It seems to help by about 5 to 10 points, but they say that it takes about 3 weeks to see the full effects.
-
Agreed. I definitely stay at the same carb level, but I may increase fats and to a much lesser extent protein. That is what my meter tells me.
-
OH MY GOODNESS, YAY!!!! You have worked incredibly hard, how wonderful!!! Congratulations a thousand times. Nicely done. :D
-
Welcome!! It's so exciting that you are managing your BGs so well! Those are excellent numbers. You can tell that you've worked very hard to get them into the normal range, especially from where you were and in such a short amount of time! Truly commendable. We have a fantastic group of people here, and you are most…
