And this letter from Organic Valley CEO: GM Alfalfa: What's Happening Now by George L. Siemon, Organic Valley CEO on January 25, 2011 I want to share with the organic and food community my experience and struggle to stop Roundup Ready® Alfalfa (RR-Alfalfa) from being released. This struggle began in 2005 when Monsanto…

This, from the Organic Valley Facebook page: We're still doing what we've always done (which doesn't include "surrendering" to Monsanto) by Organic Valley on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 12:54pm Yesterday Ronnie Cummins of the Organic Consumers Association posted a blog which left us a bit baffled. In it he accused Organic…

in each section of the forum (i.e. food and nutrition) the message topics at the VERY beginning that look like they have red tacks on them are the stickies. The stickies are universal type topics that can help answer many newbie type questions.

In some ways I agree. It just seems to me that the sheer number of new and excited people who come on here everyday will always result in newbie questions on the message forums. And that's OK. I think in turn some of the old hands who get message fatigue will rest from answering and some who have evolved to feeling like…

Happy to say I don't shop at "Whole Paycheck"...I spend my money at my local food co-op and with my local organic CSA farmer.

HAPPY FRIDAY TO ALL YOU LOVERLY LUSHES!!!!! Its so nice to see all the new folks happy to have stumbled in here (teehee). I've been a gooooood gurl this week, no drinks Sunday thru Thursday. It resulted in my lowest ever end-of-week weight! WHOOT!!! Now that its Friday I'm trying to decide what my drinks for the weekend…

Good Morning, While everyone is making really valid and spot-on comments about your food diary I'd like to mention I looked at your reasons for wanting to lose weight on your profile. You're doing this for some really great reasons. To want to be a role model and mentor to other women who need to lose weight is an…

happy monday to all you like-minded lushes! I drank plenty this past weekend.....9 beers friday night (a really good organic extra special bitter beer) with buttered popcorn for dinner, lol and Saturday night I finished off a box of wine, I'm guessing it was 5 or 6 glasses worth. Zero last night and going for zero this…

Hi, I've been working on my weight loss project for almost a year now. I lost approx 40 lbs give or take...I've found that I lose faster during the times when I don't drink than when I do. For me the times of not drinking are measured in days in a row as opposed to weeks in a row. My new thing is to not drink during the…

Hi and welcome to MFP! I resisted counting calories for DECADES! Finally, when I was 100 lbs over weight I decided I'd better make some kind of effort to lose it. I thought I'd HATE counting calories, instead what has happened is I've found that tracking what I eat helps me make better decisions. The mere act of recording…

Hi all, Mcdebbie, I'm so glad your son-in-law was found and I hope he is getting the help he needs! Well, last night the box of wine was not just calling to me but it was singing and making suggestive come-hither noises as well. I actually walked into the kitchen to grab my wine glass and instead grabbed a banana and some…

I guess I would urge you to: 1) read labels judiciously with the goal in mind to make choices as sodium healthy as possible 2) start making small steps towards making some of your own foods 3) base as much of your diet as you can on fresh fruits and veggies and fresh meats you can use in making your own meals 4) when…

as much as possible reduce the amount of processed foods you eat (anything packaged or in a box or altered in anyway) as much as possible make your own food, including salad dressings as much as possible don't salt your food, find other herbs and seasonings (but avoid some prepackaged seasoning blends, they'll possibly be…

For people who have a consistency problem with oatmeal I agree, steel-cuts are THE way to go and I've read they're healthier for you too. I buy them at my natural foods coop in bulk and they're quite cheap. I make a pot once a week: 1 cup steel-cuts to 4 cups water. I add a small dash of salt and liberal dashes of cinnamon…

Sooooo many AWESOME responses!!! They are all incredibly relevant. Thank you for asking this question. I think its really an often overlooked aspect to the weightloss/fitness "journey". It seems to me that the "head game" is an important one to address in trying to lose weight. I was just talking to a friend about how the…

Thanks, LOL! I made sure I enjoyed being naughty. NYC for a birthday celebration sounds like a blast! Good luck hun!

there's a great thread in the motivation section called "like minded lushes".....no judgmental attitudes, just folks who like to drink and are trying to lose weight.

True about spending futile time in the bread aisle reading label after label. I've found the healthiest breads in the freezer section! I believe they go bad faster because there's less preservative crap in them, so the store takes less risk by selling them in the freezer section. The healthy choices also probably,…

Happy Monday lushes! I have a policy to not drink Sunday thru Thursday.....but, ummm, policies are just meant for "in general" right? Well, yesterday I had a refrigerator space management problem and the almost empty box of wine was taking up too much room. I needed to fit my soup pot in there. So, I figured I'd drink up…

I agree! I never open a bottle of wine that I don't intend to finish......that's why I started buying boxes of wine, lol

a good rule to use is: the best bread is that which uses the fewest ingredients this helps keep crap ingredients to a minimum I would go further and say that whole grains are better than refined I mostly just eat sourdough rye bread. For tortillas I stick with corn rather than wheat.

you can set your food diary to track sodium. the goal they give you is usually 2,500 mg. there's some literature out there these days to keep sodium to 1,500 mg. If you have high blood pressure or other such sodium sensitive issues you should find out from your doc how much sodium to have in a day. if you eat alot of…

so many factors could be influencing this. you may want to make your food diary public so folks can take a look at what you're eating. It could be that you're eating a lot of sodium rich foods that may cause you to retain fluids. It'd also be helpful to know how much you're exercising and if you're eating enough food to…

The brand is Coconut Secret, it'll cost ya about $10.00 for 12 oz. One canister lasted 21/2 months for me. I get it at my local natural foods co-op. If you live near a coop or Whole Foods I bet they either have it or can get it for you. 1 Tbsp is only 30 calories and the glycemic index is only 35. Good luck! JoJo

CONGRATS and HUGS!!!! what an enormous relief! I was laid off a year ago and 3 months later a company that I'd worked for 8 years prior hired me back! I thanked them again today for hiring me, I'm still feeling incredibly lucky. So, enjoy the wedding and I hope your job provides you with at least what you need if not what…

wow, what a wild and crazy life you have, sounds like fun! I can see how it can get out of hand calorie-wise and planing-wise, but planning may be the best thing for you.....learning the right groceries to have on hand and telling your friends "go nuts with the pizza, I've got some chilie all ready to heat up". good fun…

Hello LUSHES!!!!!!!!! and welcome to all the newcomers!!! I've had a successful 2 weeks with my "no drinks during the week" policy and I believe my weight loss these two weeks will serve as a great motivator to stay the course. In the last 2 weeks I've had 3 days of what I call NEW ALL TIME LOW weights on the scale and…

I've worked to reduce sweeteners in my diet in general, and I haven't replaced them with fake sweeteners either. None of them are healthy for you. I do use 1 tablespoon of raw coconut crystal sweetener in my oatmeal each day. Raw coconut crystals is the closest I've found to an all natural, low glycemic index and low…

LOL, I'm addicted to that tool. I enter a new item at least weekly!
