  • In a rather surprising move, the Dept. of Justice ("DOJ"), representing the government defendants in the case Golinski v. OPM, asked the U.S. Supreme Court to skip one of the appeals levels a case usually goes through and take a case straight from a district court decision. Usually a federal district court case is appealed…

  • I'll give it a try. I'm not sure if it's practical for me to lose at that rate, but I'm at least willing to come post my weight once a week and be accountable to everyone.
  • Congratulations! You have every reason to be proud of yourself. You're an inspiration for us all.

  • Congratulations!!!
  • I so understand. The scale was teetering dangerously close to 200 (I'm only 5' 2") and that was it for me. I figure whatever it takes to shake us out of our denial and get to work is great. If calling yourself a lardass is that you need, then go for it. FWIW, I've found this app to be a great tool; it's made the change in…
  • Today, the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group (BLAG) filed a notice of appeal in Windsor v. USA, the case that was just decided a couple of days ago. This is the formal notice to the district court that issued the opinion that BLAG is appealing the ruling to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. BLAG is the group from the U.S.…
  • Oatmeal= 1/3 c. quick cooking oats + 2/3 c. water in the microwave 1 minute. Add 1/4 c. unsweetened soy milk = 120 cals. Add some fruit if you want and have time. It's quick, filling, low cal.
  • The only part of DOMA that is being challenged in the current court cases, including this one in the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals, is Section 3 - the part that says the federal government can't recognize marriages of same sex couples. Therefore, the lawsuits all involve couples who are (or were, in the case of…
  • Congratulations to you all! I'm looking forward to the day when marriage equality will exist across the globe - full recognition by our respective governments. It's what I work toward every day.
  • Another great resource if you want to get a succinct explanation of equal protection claims along with an interesting take on the question of GLBT political clout is Kenji Yoshino's closing keynote talk at a recent Williams Institute event. I HIGHLY recommend it. It's the last video on this page:…
  • I also wanted to add... I don't see the arguments in Perry (Prop 8) and the DOMA cases as being in conflict. In general, marriage is a matter left to state law, and pre-DOMA the feds deferred to the state's determination of whether or not a couple is married in deciding issues of federal benefits. However, while it's true…
  • I can answer the question about Walker's original ruling in Perry (the Prop 8 case). It was a sweeping ruling based on both Due Process (fundamental right to marriage) and Equal Protection claims under the 14th Amendment. As you likely know, the 9th Circuit panel decision was quite narrow, based on only a few of the facts…
  • Glad to see you here. I, too, had a Dx of fatty liver. Once before, when I lost about 20 pounds, my liver enzymes all normalized so it's very do-able. Wishes for great success.
  • Try stevia. It's derived form a plant and is completely natural. Personally, I like the liquid version, especially in drinks but the granulated might be more practical for some purposes. It used to be hard to find, but has now become more mainstream and is available in many supermarkets. But you should be able to find it…
  • Glad to see you here and wish you great success!

  • I'm bi, new to MFP and the group. Would definitely appreciate any weight loss friends for support. Also wanted to add -- I'm 61 y.o. and have a chronic illness that has me housebound a lot. Would especially appreciate any older lgbt folks who can relate to the situation. But appreciate young friends, too!
