Thanks for all the feedback! Not new to weight training, I just haven't done it since last Spring when my husband's job sent him to live and work far away and I've been juggling full time work and kids and pets and house all by myself. I feel flabby and weak and though I've tried doing stuff at home with dumb bells and…

You liked squash until you found out it was a vegetable and then you didn't like it anymore? That statement says it all. You were doing so well, willing to take suggestions and try new things...then you had to go and say that....

Yep
-
Not in the least.

200,000 years ago homo sapiens lived at the same time as neanderthals.
-
No one said that.
-
Of course they were like us. They were humans too. Evolution doesn't change that fast. Humans 200,000 years ago and humans today have the same ability to store fat if we consume too many calories. The fact is, there are many people today who live much like humans lived 200,000 years ago and biologically they're no…

Sorry...came home from work, had dinner, got distracted, lost interest.
-
*sigh* No. I don't understand why you say we don't have evidence about how humans lived in prehistory when there are many living examples today of people living exactly the way we lived during the Stone Age.
-
We don't have to go back in time to learn about our prehistoric selves. I've worked in international development for 20 years. Look at some of the global indicators for malnutrition in the poorest communities worldwide -- there's all the evidence you need.

This just resonated with me. I used to feel the same way (re: others eating with abandon) until I realized they don't. Most people aren't "naturally skinny." Any human body, if you feed it too many calories, is going to get fat. People who claim they eat anything they want are either lying or they simply don't want to…

I've been following this thread since I got to work this morning. OP, it's up to you to decide when you're ready. I know for me, every time I've had challenging moments in my life I've gained weight because I stopped paying attention. I moved overseas --> gained weight. I got my first real job --> gained weight. Went to…

I don't understand the question...? No evidence to support what notion?

Another thing...don't eat breakfast early in the morning if you don't want to. I can't eat first thing in the morning -- makes me nauseated. I start with coffee around 7am, then have a Greek yogurt around 10 am, then maybe a protein bar around noon. "Lunch" doesn't really happen for me until after 2 pm. Your body really…

Just a quick glance at your diary showed two big miscaclulations. You have 16oz of mashed potatoes as 140 calories...I came up with 395. Your 4oz of chicken thighs are entered as 120 cals, mine are 220. I've been doing this for a long time and have developed my own database based on my own recipes. It's going to take time…

I've always been heavier than I look. I'm short and pretty dense (muscular). Example: when I was in college I consistently weighed 10lbs more than my roommate, who was the exact same height and clothing size as me. More recently, I was shocked to discover that someone I know who is very large -- several inches taller than…

I don't believe in "free foods" either. Out of curiosity I googled and found this: weightwatchers.com/util/art/index_art.aspx?tabnum=1&art_id=59781 Just looking over my diary, an apple is over 100 calories, a banana is nearly 100, a clementine is 35 (love those...can eat 2 or 3 in one sitting). That stuff adds up quick! If…

There's basically no such thing as a gluten allergy. You could have celiac disease, but it has to be diagnosed by a doc with blood tests, and you would have been aware of it long before now. You could have developed have a particular food sensitivity, in which case you should work with a nutritionist and do an elimination…

I read your profile and it sounds like you don't really want to lose much more weight. Like someone said, if you're lifting weights you need to eat a lot more. MFP seems to default to 1200 cals if you tell it you want to lose 2lbs a week no matter who you are. Ignore that. You can set your calories manually. I like this…

Just to echo Lauren, I don't think you need to completely revamp your diet 100%. Making such drastic changes tends to backfire and lead to bad choices. Make smaller changes that you know you can live with over the long term. Like she said, you can still lose weight eating all the same foods you've been eating, as long as…

Just got to this... Yes, well said. Exactly.

It's not "wrong" per se, but it shows a lack of empathy on your part. Which is ok, really. If you've never been in that place mentally where someone could "allow" themselves to get to 475 lbs or whatever, you can't empathize. But maybe you could try to imagine what it would be like to be in their shoes...the humiliation,…

I waited until my kids weaned before trying to lose weight.

IMO you can have a bagel and a donut and wine, just not 3 bagels, half a dozen donuts, and a bottle of wine because calories. If you have the self control to keep those things within your calorie budget, go ahead and have them.

Major problem for me too, especially lately. I just spent an hour on the treadmill just to avoid the munchies. I hate to do it, but I may have to stop buying cookies for awhile, too. My kids will not be happy with me!

wow huh :\
