  • My husband had several surgeries on his shoulder dating back to the 1960s; the first after he fell off a bridge in Germany while in the Army. Over the years his shoulder deteriorated even further, which led to more surgeries. Eventually the pain became so bad that he finally when to an orthopedic surgeon. He ended up…
  • Logging is not weird -- for me it's like balancing my checkbook. I have to keep track of my money and my calories. Checking restaurant websites to scope out the calorie counts is totally forward thinking. I also have to watch the sodium content and realized that most restaurant foods are evil sodium bombs. Bummer. PS: I…
  • I'm another one who has to log everyday without fail. The only reason I've stayed in maintenance these last 3+ years is because of logging, wearing my Fitbit, moderate exercise, and portion control. I was out of the gym for several months due to some health reasons (damaged my pelvic floor lifting weights) resulting in two…
  • @SummerSkier I'd like to add that you're both so right about rest days, flexibility, and age all playing an important part in losing/maintaining our weight. I think we need to look at our weight loss from a whole mind/body perspective. Adding yoga, tai chi, and rest days to our routines gives us the best balance (pun…
  • @ZDandy congrats on your progress! You're looking awesome.
  • I totally understand. I have my 98 year old mother living with us. She was in hospice for about a year and half before they recently booted her out because her physical health improved (though her dementia continues to worsen). The passing of a loved one is a traumatic event no matter how much it's expected. It's wonderful…
  • Health issues are always a concern for us oldies. We want to feel better and live our lives to the fullest. I turn 69 in a couple of months and I'm still logging every bite. I weigh in every morning and follow my trend, up or down. I've been in maintenance after a 47-49 lb loss (fluctuations) for 3 years. Still hitting…
  • I concur! I'll do a catch up post. Still in maintenance, successful, and still over 55-65 years old. Maybe more people will check in. Hey, everybody -- where are you? Piano Run (the original poster), I forget your new name; are you still out there?
  • Turning 69 in October!
  • MFP has been having problems syncing with Fitbit the last couple of days; there's a notice on the "Help" desk from yesterday. Today the sync is very slow or not happening at all. Best to wait it out; it should correct by the end of the day hopefully. In the past, disconnecting and reconnecting just creates more of a sync…
  • I lost 50lbs counting calories and in maintenance about 3 years -- still counting, weighing, and measuring. I also weigh in every morning. I love gathering the data to see my fluctuations. I'll count forever and use a Fitbit; definitely don't want to put the weight back on. I pretty much suck at portion control and tend to…
  • I taught middle school for a couple of years before movin' on up to high school. I was in a small, windowless classroom with 7th graders, some of whom devoured huge pickled sausages for breakfast. Needless to say it was a stinky situation. Had to move one little girl to a seat in the rear of the classroom so she could hang…
  • Just wanted to mention -- here's a link to a thread that's been running for a couple of years now for the over 55 group. Feel free to join in and comment - it's not just for those who have had success but a support thread for us oldies. Check it out:…
  • I don't think it's shocking at all! I'm 5'2.5," 68 years old and maintain (127-131 range) on anywhere from 1750 - 2000 calories. I hit 20,000 steps everyday. That's my total for gym exercise and just regular activity.
  • I began losing at age 64 - dropped 50 lbs using MFP and a Fitbit. Highest weight was 179, current weight 128 (5'2.5"). Now at age 68 I've been in maintenance close to 3 years. There's lots of us oldies around. Welcome! Edited to add: Hey, just noticed you're in JAX; I'm in Boca. Fla girls!
  • It's not harder to lose weight (burn off fat) as you get older. I started at 64, dropped 50 lbs over 15 months and have been in maintenance ever since (68 years old, 5'2.5" - HW 179, Current WT 128. I finally stopped all the yo-yo dieting when I found MFP which became my post-graduate school university. What worked for me…
  • I recommend Fitbit. I started with a Charge HR (Charge 2 is the newer model); switched to the Blaze and love the tracking and sleep data which I find very accurate. Easy to use and few issues with syncing to MFP (except around the holidays when MFP can't keep up). Customer service is fairly helpful if you have issues with…
  • Coconut oil makes a great skin moisturizer and/or hair conditioner. I add Vitamin E to mine and use it everyday in the shower. As for eating it/drinking it in coffee, shakes, etc., no, no , no for me. It's a saturated fat so it's a pass in my diet. Edited for typo.
  • I'm a lifetime WW member (since 2000). I initially lost 30 lbs and I maintained for a time. Went back to WW in 2013 and lost a few pounds but stalled out and couldn't figure out why. WW had no answers for me. I now know I wasn't losing because I was eating at maintenance. I accidentally found MFP in 2014. I began counting…
  • I wish I was your age!
  • I'll second what @AnnPT77 said. Have your doctor check your iron and thyroid levels. Just reading your post made me tired. Are you sure that you're fueling your activity properly by eating enough calories? Is your deficit too aggressive? You say that you think you eat sufficient calories, but are you weighing and measuring…
  • Yay, for the New Year's Bump! Still in maintenance and doing well. Back to the gym after the 16th, just waiting for surgical clearance, but I've been active every day and still hitting 20K steps. Can't stop us oldies!
  • @mk2fit - sorry to hear that the weather is so bad and that you can't run. Happy New Year from the resident thread lurker. I haven't posted in quite awhile but I still read all the posts. Everyone is doing great. I'm right on my maintenance target, actually dropped a bit and averaging around 127-128. Cheers to every one of…
  • It's been rainy and cold all day today, 67 tonight and tomorrow's high will be 72, but Thursday the high will be 58 degrees here in the land of eternal sun (Florida). For me that's winter -- have to break out the sweaters and turn on the heat. I guess it's all relative. I hate the cold!
  • Bump-ditty, bump!
  • Here's the note from the Help Desk posted on Sunday, 12.17.17. There's always a sync problem at the end of each year because somebody trips over the sync plug. One year it took 2 weeks for the sync requests to process after they pushed the plug back in. Cheers! Service went down overnight, affecting sync. Sunday,…
  • The note below was posted yesterday, Sunday, 12.17.17 by MFP. They're having the usual holiday sync problems with Fitbit. This happens every year. Once they fix the problem (somebody pulled out the plug?), the sync requests are backed up and take a while to catch up. It will resolve eventually. . . Service went down…
