  • It seems like it varies from person to person. Most people feel better within the first week, but some authors say it can take up to a month to get through the carb flu.
  • I've been paleo for a year now, and I've lost about 15 pounds in that time. Really, though, I have to remind myself that paleo isn't about weightloss - it's about achieving optimal health. If I look at it that way, I have no stomach issues, no more chronic headaches, I rarely get sick (even though my kids bring home every…
  • All of the basic information is still free: http://whole9life.com/2012/08/the-whole30-program/ What they're charging $15 for is the Whole30 Daily, a daily email with motivation, support and I think maybe some recipes: https://daily.whole9life.com/ The book It Starts With Food is also written by Dallas and Melissa, and…
  • It Starts With Food has some recipes in the back, but it's much more of a why and how-to sort of book. It's awesome and I've been recommending it to everyone (even a lady in the hospital waiting room last week!). If you're interested in the science behind paleo, it's a great book. So is Practical Paleo, which has the…
  • I don't think it's necessary, at all. I think someone could go paleo pretty darn well and learn a lot about cooking in general just from a blog like Nom Nom Paleo. That being said...I do love a good cookbook and have a nice paleo collection that I turn to over and over. I think it comes down to what you like personally.
  • By about week 2, definitely. There can be a few foggy, carb flu like days before you get there, though, but it's worth it to push through!
  • Feel free to add me - I've been paleo or primal for nearly a year now. Not perfect, but working on it!
  • These are my go to when I'm really, crazy craving sugar: http://beta.primal-palate.com/recipe/chocolate-and-peppermint-swirl-truffles/ The fat definitely helps, the mint and chocolate give me a sense of it being a real treat. They have other recipes for coconut butter truffles if you're not a fan of peppermint. My other…
  • I started a Pinterest board for them, but they're not the easiest to find: http://pinterest.com/skwidlund/slow-cooker-paleo-or-primal/ This is a great list of linds to 30 different paleo friendly ones: http://hollywouldifshecould.net/2011/11/a-month-of-paleo-crockpot-recipes/ Nomnompaleo.com has some good ones too - her…
  • You can also check out chowstalker.com - they have a button on the homepage that takes you hundreds of whole30 comp,Kant recipes. I think fastpaleo.com might have a whole30 section too.
  • Welcome to the group! I'm coming up on one year paleo/primal, and it sounds like you've learned the most important lesson already
in hi! Comment by skwidlund August 2012
  • This is a great resourece for fats and oils - I think it lived on my fridge for the first six months after I started eating paleo/primal: http://www.balancedbites.com/PDFs/BalancedBites_FatsAndOils.pdf I prefer coconut oil or clarified butter for cooking or baking, and if I want the olive oil flavor I just add a drizzle at…
  • Here's a link to the basics of the Whole30: http://whole9life.com/2012/01/whole-30-v2012/# For more detail, check out the book It Starts With Food (seriously, it's awesome!).
  • I'm at the end of week 8 and I still love it! I've never stuck with a DVD series for more than a few weeks. I actually look forward to workout out every morning - crazy!
  • I'm starting one on the 4th. I'll be out of town for that weekend, but I'm anxious to get another one started!
  • I prefer the terms slow carb or smart carb - more honest (to me, at least) as to what paleo and primal are at their core.
  • This is super important! I believe Robb Wolf says it takes two weeks to get gluten fully from your system, and my son's GI specialist said the same thing at his appointment last week.
  • I second picking up It Starts With Food - I've been paleo/primal for a year now and have read pretty much everything out there, and it really is just amazing in it's clarity. Some of the best advice I got when I was starting out was to keep the 80/20 in the back of my mind, but don't really aim for it. Shoot for 100% and…
  • What he said! It's not too hard to work out reasonable restaurant meals, but boxed lunches are a horror! I was at a conference and the only parts of one I could eat were the lunchmeat from the sandwich and the single strawberry. I carried jerky, nuts, small bags of baby carrots and coconut flakes in my bag. I've also seen…
  • Basically - strict paleo for 30 days, no weighing, no measuring: http://whole9life.com/2012/08/the-whole30-program/ The newish book "It Starts With Food" is written by the couple behind the Whole30 - it's such a great resource. I did one last year and it was amazing. Hard, but amazing.
  • I think I might be in! I've been meaning to do one soon, and would love to have a group for support. And that would give me enough time to finish up the greek yogurt I just bought
  • Your meal plan for the 22nd looks awesome! I don't think there's much you can do skip the carb flu - I'd been gluten and mostly grain free for over a year when I went paleo/primal last September, and I still suffered through it though it was milder than what a lot of people report. And I second the advice to plan. If you…
  • I wasn't a big fan of Sarah Fragoso's first cookbook Everyday Paleo, and looked at the other one at Costco the other day. I couldn't find more than a handful of recipes I wanted to try while flipping through it, so I put it back. I'd borrowed Everyday Paleo from my cousin last year, cooked about 10 of the recipes and ended…
  • I order coconut oil from tropical traditions.com - they have great prices, lots of sales and free shipping fairly often. I usually find aminos at Whole Foods or order from Amazon.
  • I've been paleo or primal for nearly a year now (sometimes I include dairy for more protein), but it was an easy transition for me since I'm gluten-intolerant and had already cut out a lot of grains. It can be a lot of work, but it's worth it - not just for weight loss, but for the energy levels and clarity I have now! If…
  • Plan, plan, plan. Breakfast, lunch dinner and snacks if you can - it will help when you're short on time or tired and are tempted to eat something else. And cooking extra protein or chopping extra veggies to keep in the fridge to grab in a pinch are helpful no matter how long you've been eating this way!
  • More than giving up anything specific, i think somewhere around day 25 was the hardest for me - I was past the excitement of how great I felt and soooo close to the end. I was also feeling really bored with food in general, so I had to dig and find a few new recipes to keep me on track for the last few days.
  • I've never actually soaked nuts, but I did remember this recipe and info from my traditional foods days: http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2010/04/21/how-to-make-crispy-nuts-to-reduce-phytic-acid/ I'm not sure if the salt soak and dehydrating help with lectins like they do they phytates, but you might want to do some…
  • That's awesome! I think there are so many of those aches and pains we just accept and live with that could be helped by diet. And I do have to add that I have made more than a few paleo/primal converts just by living this way - from a friend, her husband and their 7 kids to my hairdresser who was amazed at how healthy my…
  • Same here! The more I learn about nutrition and how it affects our bodies, the more I undertand that an allergic reaction isn't the only thing that should keep us from eating something. I wish more doctor's would get that clue! It's not the weightloss that keeps me eating paleo - it's the fact that what I was told was…
