I agree with the above poster. But I'm the opposite. I tend to feel pukey if I eat anything before working out, and since I work out at 6am, there's no way I'm going to eat 2-3 hours before that. I guess maybe it would be OK if I was doing sustained cardio like running, but I do boot camp / crossfit. Food + burpees = not…

I hate when I agree with you.

This! Seriously, eggs are fast and easy. It takes me 3 minutes to fry 2 eggs in the morning. I use a cast iron skillet, so clean up is as easy as wiping it with a paper towel. Worst case, 5 minutes if I need to clean the pan with water and re-season. I sometimes eat the eggs while I'm getting dressed... multi-task, baby!…

I also find that video amazing. Nourish your mitochondria, people! This is why it's not just about cal in / cal out.

That link didn't load for me, either. There are limited studies that support both views... that high carb promotes satiety, and that high protein promotes satiety. You can google it and you find both. Fiber surely fills you up... it bloats you. But I'd rather not be full of gas, and I'd rather get my fiber from more…

I ditto the personal trainer, and not just for one session. But also make sure that PT really knows kettlebells. I'm learning kettlebells at Crossfit. I had no idea that in the past I had been using them so incorrectly (even with a personal trainer). And I also find that when I get tired, I lose form. It's good to have a…

You could try it with a higher carb target, but still lower compared to what you're probably used to. Try keeping to lower than 100g/day rather than 50. Like others said... for me it's an easy way to make sure I get my cals from foods that are filling and more nutrient-dense, and to avoid eating the foods that I tended to…

You had your gallbladder removed. There is a link between gallbladder disease and celiac. Were you ever tested for celiac disease? The pain could be caused by this if you're eating gluten and can't tolerate it. Here's a nice blog post about one woman's experience with gallbladder disease and gluten:…

Ditch the bagels. Believe me, I was a total bagel addict. I ate one almost every day for most of my adult life. When I was pregnant and diabetic, I had to quit bagels and it was torture. You can guess what hubby had waiting for me to eat once I popped out the kids. It was that bad. Now... I don't miss them at all. I…

The diet doesn't go "to extreme" just to be extreme. It's not like the "only eat cabbage soup for 7 days" diet. The whole point of the diet is to eat the most nutritious foods you can, and eliminate foods that are either: - not nutrient-dense (and therefore take up space on your plate that could be filled by more…

Great and thoughtful post. That's the reality for most people, like me, who eat "Paleo". Those who proclaim it to be too restrictive assume that we NEVER enjoy anything "off-plan". The reality is that most are 80/20, or 90/10. We eat healthy most of the time, so and enjoy the 20% non-Paleo foods. Eating with a "dogma", as…

I eat high fat/mod protein/low carb. I have mine set for 65/20/15, f/p/c. I'm almost always below 100g carb (total). I personally find it harder to limit cals if I include non-produce carbs in my diet. By going low carb by eating carbs from fruit and veg, I have an easy time eating at a cal deficit and have no cravings.…

Big link between gallbladder issues and gluten. Get yourself tested for celiac disease. Or try eliminating gluten for 30 days before you have surgery.

Coconut oil is not a magic weight loss tool. But, it's a very healthy source of saturated fat, and is excellent for high heat cooking. I like the nutty, barely there flavor it lends to veggies. I also use it to season my cast iron pans after every use.

Omnivore's Dilemma is great. For a lighter read, but just as interesting, is Pollan's book called Botany of Desire. He looks at the impact that 4 plants have had on human society... Apples, tulips, corn, and marijuana. Amazing book. It's amazing to learn the history of these 4, and how much they have influenced us (and us,…

Thanks for the feedback. I used an amazing diagnostic tool called "Google", and searched on "numb thumb overhead squat". Seems I'm not alone! I think it's a C6 nerve impingement... basically a cervical nerve issue in the neck. Probably because I must have had my head out too far when my shoulders were back with the bar…

Wow. Sorry to hear about your Mirena issues. I've had mine for a year and no side effects. My suggestion, based on no information other than my gut feeling, is just try to eat foods that are highly nutrient-dense. Keep your sugars/carbs in check, and try to get them mostly from veggies. Try 30 days of eating the highest…

Coffee. Totally fine on paleo. Well, probably not technically but we're human. Strict paleo would say no cream. You could sub in almond milk or coconut milk. But it's not the same. Or, you could declare yourself "Primal" and add the cream. For the past 30 years I've added sugar or a sweetener to my coffee. I never thought…

Technically, you shouldn't have to track calories if you're eating really strict paleo, because it's hard to over eat when you eat mostly meat and veg. But reality is that if you are trying to lose weight, and especially in the beginning, it's good to track. You can eat too many cals from things like nuts, nut butters,…

I'll remember that if we ever finally get to hang together. I never drink anymore, so when I do, one wine hits me hard. Two wines and I'm dancing on tables. Add tequila? Puking in the bushes.

Like others said... when you drink alcohol, it's not Paleo so consider it your treat. If you're gluten sensitive.. avoid beers unless you get a GF one. This is the "official" Paleo drink: NorCal Margarita... invented by Robb Wolf (so he says) 2 shots (4 oz) of top shelf Tequila juice of one lime club soda ice But remember,…

I buy Applegate Farms.

Try the Paleo/Primal Support group. Many there eat organic, and Paleo is gluten free. To the poster who asked for breakfast ideas. Of course, there's always eggs and veggies. But lately I've been loving soup for breakfast. Warm and filling. You can also eat leftover dinner for breakfast.

You can't eat whatever you want from certain food groups and lose weight. It can seem like that, because it's hard to overeat meat and veggies. It is not, however, hard to overeat fruit, nuts, and nut butters. So with a Paleo diet, generally people lose without counting calories because if they're doing it right, they're…

congrats! That's my goal too.

Like all meats, try to buy from a local farm, Farmer's market, or from a source that treats the animals humanely. Factory-farmed pork is insanely cruel to the animals and the crap they feed them and inject them with goes to you when you consume them. Check www.eatwild.com to find local sellers of pastured or humanely…

You'll get it. My first batch was also bland and no gelatin. Beef marrow bones don't have much cartilage and I think you need the cartilage to get the gelatin consistency. The top layer you got was fat. You can use that for cooking but it might not have a ton of flavor. Save up bones as you cook steaks, and leave a little…

Try www.paleoparents.com. They also have a cute cookbook called Eat Like a Dinosaur. Some great kid-friendly recipes in there. Every recipe is marked with steps the kids can do (with supervision) and all common allergens are labeled.
