That is terrible! What do you people have against Council Bluffs? (I am teasing, of course. Hope you have a great race.)

I think it probably was not rude. So many of us need to lose weight, or do lose weight, these days that she probably did not think it was a sensitive subject.

Google: Yoga poses for your feet. They usually involve being up on your toes, to strengthen your feet, and they are balancing poses. I seem to remember doing poses that required me to be on my toes and then squatting down. Diver's (or diving) pose would help you learn to balance while on your toes.

I am not dismissing any weights whatsoever. But I am a runner and I have some experience with this. If I deadlift heavy, I do not run well the next day. If I squat heavy, I do not run well the next day. And, that means there are at least two days out of the week that I am not running well -- the day I lift and the day…

Does it go to Council Bluffs? Cuz if it doesn't go to Council Bluffs. Meh.... That pedestrian bridge across the Missouri is beautiful, and the views from the top of the bluffs are spectacular!

This is what I was going to say. Your trainer is not a medical person and it sounds like your knee issues are a medical issue. On the other hand, what the physical therapist is telling you is the old-school canard about squatting. Get another medical opinion. See what the new person says. (I am not sure I would go with an…

I don't mean to be a scold. But: Work on accepting your body for what it is. We all have insecurities, and it is great that they drive us to work in the gym. But they will consume us if we let them. We work hard to make our bodies look better. You do too. Rejoice in the journey and the accomplishment. Progress has come and…

I am going to agree with the others. But I am going to give you a slightly more nuanced answer. One thing that many people find when they train for a marathon, which should be the most-calorie burning type of training you could do, is that they do not lose weight. Why not? Because when you exercise heavy, you make yourself…

You need a running stroller for two and long walks. I walked everywhere I could. Always, when I went to the store. Pushing the extra weight made it even better exercise. The other major thing I did involved picking my wife up from work. We just had one car, so I needed to pick her up. But I might have done it anyway, for…

I'm with lporter and MeanderingMammal. Strength training would not be a good idea, unless it is bodyweight training. The idea of crosstraining when you are training for a marathon is to get some additional exercise in without the repetitive motion and pounding of running. Something like Pilates might be great because it…

Hot water is an excellent and gentle laxative, that's why people often poop after their coffee. Have you tried hot water/coffee/tea an hour or so before a run?

Glad you went to the doctor. I'm sure he got it right. If you tear a ligament, there will be considerable play in your knee. Here's what I know. (This, from an amateur, mind you, but one with some experience.) People don't usually tear their MCl without tearing their ACL, and when you tear your ACL there is a loud,…

It's true. Of course. Exercise and bad eating won't make you skinny. But, there is a famous study of people who successfully lost weight and then kept it off for at least two years, out of the University of Colorado, I believe. The researchers of this study have been using this group of people to try to identify what they…

Thanks. Very touching. I have the best time when I go to the gym with my boys.

Wait until the kid gets older and still wants to be carried. It will happen. You won't burn many extra calories then either. But you will get stronger arms! :-)

I think the key is to make sure the dog knows and follows the commands "stop" and "come." Then, realize you are always taking a chance when a dog is not on a leash. A dog is not a robot. You cannot expect a dog to be perfect. I don't care how well-trained your dog is. This is one of my pet peeves. I absolutely hate the way…

It is quite common to have a strength imbalance between your two legs. Researchers have measured the leg strength of soccer players. Now, you would think that nobody would be more even than someone who runs, runs, runs, right? They sprint. They are always on one leg and, over time, that has to even out with all the steps…

I appreciate runner friends. I run about three times per week, and play tennis. I have been slow due to a meniscus tear. But I have been running through it and the last month or so I have been running well. I think I am getting over it. Some tears can actually heal. I am probably a bit too old to hope for that, but the…

The study also showed that 19 years was the nadir, however, until you became a senior. It showed that people in their 20s are the most active, except for the really little kids. But, that said, even for the 20-somethings, the activity levels are pathetic for all of us. We've got to work on it. We've got to shut off the…

We still have a lot of snow in the Sierra Nevadas above 6,000 feet. Plus, the streams are gushing. It is putting a damper on many trails and peaks.

We were 105 degrees F here in the Central Valley of California yesterday. Today is expected to go to 107 degrees F. Tomorrow too. Yikes! We are praying for relief.

I'm in my 50s. I am here to log my time on the tennis court and my running, and the other physical activities I do. I also like to discuss new medical-health-fitness news and frequently write about these things on my news feed. Please, I would love to be added by people.

Fine! Of the greens it has the least nutritional value. But oh so crunchy! I'll take everyone else's.

I am just going to reiterate what a few people have already said here: plantar fasciitis. The classic early presentation of PF is as heel pain. I thought 'I must have a heel spur" when I first got mine. It the pain worst with the first steps out of bed every morning? That is another classic PF sign.

I would assume that real stairs are better for glutes than a stair-stepper machine. But haven't studies shown that you get more glute activation on a fast treadmill than you do on an elliptical or stair-stepper?

You have to get to the dermatologist. That is what they do is treat acne. There are many things you can try short of Accutane, which is not generally recommended for women of child-bearing age. I'd be really surprised if you couldn't get yours better. Good luck.

Can I just say that the life/fitness changes and declines that one associates with the increasing decades -- losing a step, more soreness, stiffer, etc. -- almost never happen at 30 years, 40 years, etc. They happen. But in my experience they happen a few years after the decade-birthday. Say 33 years, instead of 30 years.…

If nothing else, lifting weights helps one to maintain good bone density. The spine appreciates the stress of a heavy load.

I walk for a few hundred yards before I run. Then, after a half mile or so, I will windmill each arm a few times, do some high-knee strides and some butt-kickers. My wife runs a mile, gets warm and a bit loose, then stops and does some serious stretches. She does calf stretches, touches her toes, puts her heel to her but…

I think the Stronglifts/Starting Strength-type program is good advice. Those programs are easy and they are fun. And they produce notable results, rather quickly. However, I have to say, having done this kind of weight training: It will make your running harder, and probably much slower, on the days after you lift. If you…
