  • Here is a stand by spaghetti sauce for 201 calories and makes NINE 1 cup servings. 2 oz of Pasta is 200 calories. Add a nice salad with a sensible dressing and you would be hard pressed to break 550 cal for a meal. This is also a great sauce of an Italian Jane (sauce over a split potato). I use this as a fill in for…
  • A lot of people here have given a lot of solid advise. Diet fads are just that. The only consistent change you can make to your lifestyle is burn more calories than you consume. A calorie deficit = weight loss, just like a calorie surplus = weight gain. I think MFP does a fantastic job in helping the user see exactly what…
  • I am using RunKeeper's C25K, with Day 5 being tomorrow. I have it every other day and "something" else on the other days (at least a 30 min walk). My wife started Zumba last night (we bought the DVD last year) after seeing me drag in yesterday after my walk/run :) I figure if she can do Zumba, I can do Zumba.... at least…
  • I don't think the modern device take horseback riding into account. Not to say that it is not an activity. I recall it kills your core, butt and legs. Check out this site and look down about a full page length. You will see horseback riding. I think I would use something like this and ignore the body monitor when you are…
  • It is evident you weekend is not scheduled. I say this, because we have a set order of business during the work week. We have to plan it out. Weekends, no so much. Step 1 - Plan you weekend meals Next thing, you probably do not have any fixed tasks to accomplish. The weekend is you own after all. Set up some tasks. Maybe…
  • A good curry recipe can turn any ole boring meat dish into some special. Add in some rice (brown, yellow or white) and you have a solid, tasty meal without a lot of extra calories. http://www.food.com/recipe/quick-curried-pork-chops-61176 This is an easy one we use. Substitute a half cup no sugar added applesauce for the…
  • I can give you a great running song, Juke Box Hero by Foreigner. I modified it a tad when I was in the Army to sing as a Cadence for running in formation (ie Double Time). The beat of the song is when your left foot his the ground. This is a "running back" song when the unit is tired and cannot keep cadence very well. The…
  • Best = Teeth and Curls.
  • Awesome goal! I can't say I am train for a marathon... just C25K right now. You gotta start somewhere right?
  • The biggest thing that helped me was dancing. My wife and I started ballroom dancing and the weight fell off. We were dancing three nights a week, for about 6 to 8 hours (total) a week. We have two kids now, so going out like that is really not possible.
  • My goal is to get down to 15% Body Fat. That should be around 60 lbs from where I started (@ 237), but weight is not the important thing. Losing 12% Body Fat is the important thing :) Feel free to add me...
  • I did WW years ago but stopped when Fruits became free... because they are not free :) I think WW went from a good tool to something more about keeping members paying dues. Calories, Fat, Carbs, Protein... they don't lie.
  • Motivation... hmmm. What do you want? I mean, what do you REALLY want? Write it down on a piece of paper. Big. Take up the whole sheet. Beneath that, write out all the reason why you want what you want. Put them both it on the wall. When you get up in the morning, read it, out loud and mean it. Then look at your reasons. I…
  • I am FAR from local, but willing to share :) I think you will have a lot of people are in the same boat you are in and trying like hell to get out of. Never hurts to have someone on your side to talk about what bugs you or have an honest opinion with the circumstance at hand. Add me :)

  • I fell off the wagon and have just returned to MFP after an 18 month hiatus. Please feel free to add me :)
  • Welcome to MFP. There are a host of free apps out there to help with fitness, from cardio to crossfit. However, while you gain gain muscle in the gym you lose weight in the kitchen. Get a digital scale to get an accurate weight of what your are eating, be truthful in your diary and make every day count. You have taken the…
  • My wife breast fed both of our daughters for 6 months (they are now 5 and 9). It really helped pull the weight off of her. However, you will be eating for "two", just don't overdue it :) Congratz! And like psych101 said, enjoy the time. I can recall when I could hold my eldest and she was about the length of my arm from my…
  • My real problem is gout. I have to limit meat to 5oz a day. I have a purine count I try to stay under, which is damn hard to do. Doc recommended 150 milligram limit. This is not something they put on the side of a box and is a pain to research. Everything is generalized. There is also a lot of conflicting reports on what…
  • Get on the scale tomorrow and log the weight. Failure does not define us, what we do after does. That said, I am going to let you in on a little secret, the weight scale is a liar! Weight is subjective. Body Fat Percentage is not. Let me give an extreme example: Lou Ferrigno weighed in at 285 lbs @ 6'5" in 1975 and was one…
  • Forget what your did in the past. Look to tomorrow. I need you to go take photos of yourself (front, side and back). Then get on the scale and take measurement to calculate your body fat percentage. Change your "Report" options to include all of the stats. Once or twice a week record you weight. Once or twice a month take…
  • When I was in the Army, Physical Training was my life. I was in very good shape BUT I never really lost the middle :( I found out very recently that you gain muscle in the gym but lose weight in the kitchen. If you are trying to lose weight, then I think what you take in is going to make ALL the difference. Not to say that…
  • While I am not a young woman on the road to fitness, just a middle aged husband/father of two trying to do right by me and my family. I "was" over weight from puberty to right before I joined the Army at 24 years old. Those years were hard and now I see my eldest daughter (about to turn 10) start wading into those same…
  • Even if you are eating out, there are some places that should just be taboo. If you go into a place that makes the majority of its income off fried foods or has a cartoon mascot, run. There is nothing to see there. Move along. Mexican restaurants can be hell. They just drop a trough of fried corn in front of you. Then they…
  • Add me. I think a lot of us on MFP have gotten on the weight roller coaster and finally managed to get off the ride healthy. Only to fool ourselves and get back on. I have been on the ride so long, my butt has etched an outline in the seat :) I am off the roller coaster again, so why does my brain tell me I am taking the…
  • Simply, No. Next thing you know, they will be handing out Solyent Green ration cards. The problem is when and where does it stop. You cannot have drinks larger than 12oz, because 13oz+ leads to obesity. Are they going to ration cooking oil because I might be frying chicken at my house? You know 80/20 beef is 20% fat, no…
  • 1350 Cal a day here and I started C25K over the weekend (Day 3 is tomorrow). I was in the Army for 5 years and I N E V E R liked running. Put an 80 lbs pack on my back and go for a 12 mile march, cool. Morning PT of 4 mile run, not cool. Sprints, hate em. However, running... like broccoli, is something I just have to put…
  • I am ex-Army and ashamed of what I let myself sink into, apathy about diet and exercise breeds fat. I have never had the problem building muscle, as I have always had to worry about fat. Have you thought about cross fit training?
  • Added. 43 year old here, who was diagnosed with gout about a month ago. Having to make a lot of dietary changes can be difficult, especially when the old stand bys are now off limits because of a high purine count. 5 oz of meat a day is a bear to wrestle! I don't really know what I am going to do when I want to start…
  • Bfast = 7:00 to 8:00 AM Snack = 10:15 Lunch = noon PM Snack = 3:00 Supper = 6:00 to 7:00 If I am doing something like lifting or a DVD program, I have a pre & post workout supplement. If I am just going out for a jog or cardio, then I don't. I personally cannot eat anything before heavy exertion, I either get bad cramps or…
