you're probably not gaining muscle but burning the fat that hides your existing muscles.

I always hate it when people point out that they weigh less than me, when obviously one pound of me weighs the same as one pound of them...

I think his point was a rif on the fact that you can't out exercise a bad diet. He even agreed that strength training will help the OP reach her goals more than cardio, but that won't matter if her diet sucks.

I think there's a lot of areas where non-specialist Doctors don't know any more than anyone else. Mainly diet, nutrition, and exercise. It seems like there's a daily post on here about a doctor giving someone bad advice in one of those areas. That said, I'm not sure I would just ignore the doc's recommendation. Talk to the…

If you do lift or do cardio, just pay attention to your body. When you donate blood you reduce your body's blood supply by somewhere around 1/6th. Since blood is what carries oxygen throughout your body, and you will be working out with less of it, don't be surprised if you feel pretty light headed while you're working…

They usually tell me "no heavy lifting for the next 24 hours" and consider heavy anything more than 5 lbs in the arm you donated with. I normally end up taking the day off working out when I donate.

I think the biggest disconnect here is that the husband doesn't necessarily want the OP to not lift heavy, but that he doesn't want her to get "bulky". His main goal seems to be that he doesn't want you to look bulky, which is fine, that's an aesthetic thing and everyone will have different tastes. The problem is that he's…

If you're not comfortable asking to work in, a decent alternative is to ask "How many sets do you have left?" They get the idea that you're waiting for the machine and will either limit the screwing around or ask you to work in anyway.

Just had a guy tell me today that deadlifting is the worst exercise you can do because every time you lift it you hear a sound like your knuckles cracking (I don't hear this) and that's a disc in your back snapping in half. I just smiled at him and said "I don't think I ruptured a disc." At least he said it after I was…

Was recently at the dermatologist and she said just to use an antibacterial soap after a workout (she recommended Lever 2000) and to scrub down well. Its been working for me so far.

I'm in a similar position to the OP. I'm at my goal weight, I've been doing Starting Strength (practical programing version) for a couple months now, and have started doing some accessory lifts at the end of my workout. In my case, I'm lifting as heavy as I can, not necessarily "following the program" (not eating 4000…

Same here. I must have been close to having the right flexibility because it didn't take more than a couple of weeks for my shoulders to stretch to the point where I could grip the bar properly. I think as long as you're working towards getting the right grip you're probably ok doing the BB squats.
-
a) I've never done high bar squats, so I don't really know. I think it would be more of a difference in back angle between the two (and high bar can be done with less shoulder flexibility). Other than that I'm not such an expert that I know what the differences are in terms of muscle recruiting. b) Again, not an expert,…

Not sure what you're confused about... I'm not an expert but: Eating at a surplus = gaining weight. If you're doing a lot of lifting while eating at a surplus a larger portion of the weight you gain will be muscle than if you weren't lifting. The added muscle increases your body's capacity for strength which fuels the…

I go to a World's Gym where the monthly cost for gym membership is $10. Childcare there is either $10/month for "unlimited" use, or $3 per each time you use it. With 2 kids we are basically paying $500/year for our gym membership, not terrible for what we get out of it. The actual childcare is pretty limited. More or less…

this. Catch your breath, check your form and get back in it.

For me, I was around 20 lbs overweight and before I changed anything diet wise, I spent a couple weeks tracking my calories before I made any changes. It was pretty easy to see what I needed to change from that point. Normally, I didn't eat any breakfast, would eat some sodium/fat laden fast food type lunch and a…

Not to dissuade you from doing Insanity, but I've got a slightly different viewpoint. I did Insanity from the end of October and finished my 60 days on Christmas Eve. I had lost ~ 15 lbs before starting and was already at my goal weight and was looking to "take things to the next level." I had some pretty great results, I…

Yes, everyone has a story but a job interview isn't going to reveal anyone's full story. All that you have to put your best foot forward is your appearance, your ability to answer the questions given, your job skills and experience and your resume. Beyond that, whether or not you get hired will depend (at least some…

I'm not sure that they are "pushing to create unhealthy junky foods for children" as much as they are aggressively pushing to market foods that children will eat to children. This is a very interesting issue since, it isn’t all that difficult for any individual to go out, find the information regarding how to eat healthier…

Go to a bookstore or Amazon and buy "Starting Strength". It gives you super detailed instructions on how to do the basic important lifts, and has a workout program to follow in order to build your strength level. The "program" involves eating a lot more calories than I'm used to, so I'm not following it to the T, but I'm…

I like to wear my HRM while I'm lifting, even though I know the number isn't supposed to be accurate. It consistenly shows calorie burns 3-4x higher than what MFP puts if you let it calculate the calories as a cardio exercise. I've also noticed that by logging what the HRM shows, eating back my exercise calories on the…

I've always heard this, but I've just recently started lifting and that's definitely not the case for me. I'm using a starting strength program, and during a 55 minute lifting workout yesterday my HRM logged a 688 calorie burn. That's pretty comparable to what I was burning using the same HRM during a 40 minute Insanity…

I finished insanity just before christmas and was in a similar, not much to lose situation (I'd dropped almost 20 lbs before I started). I ended up not losing any weight but 2 pants sizes, and there is a noticeable difference in how "toned" my body looks now.

I tend to think most of the hate against Armstrong isn't because he cheated, but because of how he reacted to the accusations. Read some of the accounts of those Tour teams he was on. He wasn't just doping because everyone else was, he was the ringleader. He encouraged the other riders on his team to cheat as a means to…

I had my highest calorie burns in month one on the plyo workout too. I didn't get quite as high as 950, though I was around that point in the month 2 Max interval one.

The schedule I have notes that you should swap those two videos in for month two only. I liked Cardio Core and balance a lot during recovery week since it really gave you a break from all the crazyness to a slower pace but still challenging workout. The sports training video is closer to one of the regular Max type…

Pure cardio is tough, Max cardio is tougher, but for some reason I always got bigger calorie burns on the "Plyo Cardio" and "Max interval" workouts. I think the 3 minutes on, 30 seconds off setup of those workouts works better for me than just going straight through with no breaks.
