1 cup (US measure) is a measure of VOLUME = 8 FLUID OUNCES. In terms of WEIGHT, if it's water or other liquid that's mostly water (milk, wine, beer...), that = 8 OUNCES. Less if it's something lighter than water (less dense, really), like olive oil or flour.
